DP's "Brick and Mortar"

Photos of "Digital Press Videogames" store at 387 Piaget Ave in Clifton, NJ.

These photos are from the store's May 2007 NAVA meeting held on Saturday, May 26th. This was also the date for the "Random Retro" Tournament held for the second time.  See below the photos for past galleries of the store and its setup. Click any photo below for a larger view.

May NAVA summary: big turnout, fair selection of trade stuff (any day I can walk away with PSX Castlevania Chronicles, Diablo and Tactics Ogre in the same day is at least fair), excellent cake. What we'll remember the most from this one was the Atari 2600 tournament, which was both competitive and VERY entertaining.
Setting the stage: note Mike "killersquirel" in blue sitting behind the players. Note as Dave "portnoyd" struggles with this particular game that Mike would seem to be heckling. No... really? The tournament featured a different Atari 2600 game in each round.
Each game was head-to-head... no waiting for the other guy or getting a chance to analyze. The contestants did not know which game they'd be playing until they were in place and I plugged it in. There was an "old school" vs. "the kids" matchup in the first round and "the kids" certainly held their own.
But ultimately the crusty veterans took the top spots. Maryah has a big voice for a little woman. With this bullhorn, simply deafening. The finalists are brought to the forefront. Oh yeah, at one point Mike was playing Kyle "klausien" in Canyon Bomber. Mike was frantically twisting the paddle leading Kyle to wonder "what's the paddle for? WHAT'S THE PADDLE FOR?"...
Naturally for those familiar with the game, the paddle does nothing. Mike was creating a diversion :D As Mike and Mickey "Vectorman0" battled over the grueling final round of Warlords, Mike's combination of mad skillz and treachery ultimately wore down his young opponent. The two remained friends for at least the next 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the store we had the usual NAVA fun - recommending good new (and old) games to each other, getting some LAN action in, and looking through girls clothes with our patented X-Ray Spex. Actually those are Famicom 3D glasses. Kyle brought a full set of the 3D games, even the Famicom Disk System for all of us to experience.
Let me not forget another highlight of this NAVA. The NES CAKE! Yes, this entire thing is edible, including the controller wire. I might add that not only is this a work of art but it was also quite tasty! A gift to the NAVA crew, courtesy of talented DP Associate Jenny.
... and this is Jenny, one of two "new people" (at least since the last set of pictures). This is Raj, the other "new people". These two are great to talk games to, remember this next time you stop in. Trading was kinda light but there were at least 10 tradeboxes on the floor and I think just about everyone walked away with some kind of deal.
