Default Help with Game Specific Soundfonts

I was wondering what programs do people usually use to convert MIDI's to soundfonts like the bunch of NES remixes done on YTMND? I'd like to try that myself. There was another cool YTMND where a guy took a MIDI of the Megaman 2 title screen and converted the channels to music samples from Megaman 7 ( http://rm2-rm7.ytmnd.com/ ) . I always thought it'd be cool to take MIDI music MIDI's and convert them to the samples of a 16 bit game.

Imagine, Megaman music heard Final Fantasy 3/6 style.

You don't actually convert the MIDIs. The Soundfonts are files that you install into the MIDI banks on modern Soundblaster sound cards. When you play a MIDI after installing the Soundfont, it plays back using that font. In order to make those mixes, you'd just record what you're hearing using another program (i.e.: Audacity on "What U Hear").

OK that's cool, how do I go to MIDI drivers in Windows XP?

If you have Creative's UniDriver installed (the main soundcard drivers from thier site that work with Live and Audigy cards) you should have a Start munu entry for Creative > Soundblaster (or Audigy) > Audio HQ. In the Audio HQ is a button that says SoundFont. If you have a .sf2 soundfont file soumewhere on your drive, click the "load" button and and go to it's name.

I suspect that the drivers from the install CD probably install the Audio HQ as well, but I'm not sure since my card was obtained second-hand.

Some of the Soundfont files (the ones that replace the MIDI in your soundcard) can be found here http://www.zophar.net/utilities/soundfont.html .
