Default Metroid for NES to have battery?

i just got a new 72 pin for my old nes, so i'm going through all my games (only about 35 or so) and opening them up and cleaning them.

i'm about half way through and i get to Metroid. It clearly has a spot for a battery, very similar to my Zelda (the only battery one i've opened so far)

I'm aware that Metroid and Kid Icarus where the first password games, i'm wondering if they were originally intended to be battery games??? Or where battery games developed after password games?

Just a thought, i figure someone here might know.

You are correct, it is an SNROM-03 board which supports battery backup.

Metroid, Kid Icarus and Zelda were all originally on the Famicom disk system which supported writing to the game for saving. Who knows why at the time that Metroid and Icarus were altered to support passwords instead, maybe it was going to be too expensive but it's quite clear that Nintendo had it planned to some degree.. Zelda came next and it supported battery.

PS: While you're opening those carts do me a favor and let me know if you see any battery backup TKROM boards that use MMC3 chips. I know Crystalis is a TKROM-01 already.
