Is this system backwards compatable with the PS2 and Ps1 Games? If not can you dowload a patch that will make it or do i have to have the ps2 and ps1 systems to run the games?
Thanks

Can't wait for Bioshock 2 !!!
I don't think the 120GB has been confirmed, unless I am wrong. Otherwise, we don't know what it has or does not have.
These cartridges are dirty as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!
I believe it's been confirmed that any system after the 80gig will not be backwards compatible with PS2 games. So either track down an 80gig, or pay buy a 60 off of e-bay and replace the hard drive with a bigger one.
Well, since there's no 120Gig SKU, I assume you're asking if the system is compatible with PS2 games in general ... or PS2 games that use the HDD.
If your question is "Can you use the PS3's HDD on PS2 games that require the HDD" the answer is yes. There is a free patch that you can download from the PSN store to play PS2 games that use the HDD (Final Fantasy 11, Resident Evil Outbreak, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, etc.)
Of course, it will have to be a PS2 compatible PS3 like the 20, 60, or 80 Gig models.
Not the 40 Gig wich doesn't play PS2 games.
"And the book says: 'We may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us.'"
This is also a technical explanation as to why the 40GB does not play PS2 games. I remember reading about this awhile back that the 40GB is actually missing something crucial (PS2 GPU?) that the 80GB model contains to play PS2 games. In other words, no update ever for the 40GB system will make it play PS2 games. I would place a strong bet that any new PS3 to come out will not include the necessary components to play PS2 games either. I had the 60, foolishly sold it, but now was lucky enough to grab an 80GB right before they became extinct in my neck of the woods. I do not use the PS2 mode much, but I'm glad to have it there....especially considering I do not have a PS2 at all now.
20 and 60 GB PS3s have a full PS2 GPU and Emotion chipset for PS2 compatibility.
80 GB doesn't have the PS2 Emotion Engine chipset (but emulates it through software).
40 GB has nothing!!! No EE chips, no GPU, no PS2 semiconductors whatsoever.
Though, all model PS3's play PS1 games excellently.
"And the book says: 'We may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us.'"
It hasn't been confirmed that PS2 compatibility will never return to the PS3 lineup, which is why some people are hopeful a new high end SKU could possibly reintroduce it as a feature.
And PS2 compatibility could be introduced to present models not compatible, unlike what you stated, if they ever decide to completely emulate the PS2. Doesn't seem likely, but it's not impossible like you state it is.
No it hasn't been confirmed that it will never come back, but the people i've talked to (SCEA people) have made it pretty clear to me that if you want any BC you better buy a 20/60/80, and if you want as much BC as you can get, to snag a 60. It's not going to come back. Like the 360 BC enough people still have their original XBox's that its not as big of a deal as we feel it is.
Same can be said for the PS3 BC. Hell all my PS2's have BC and I never use them to play PS titles... I actually use a PS to play them.

Not to mention Sony still makes $$ on PS2's sold ...
... and they're currently still selling assloads for a system that's 10 years old.
So, if you were Sony, why encourage people to NOT spend money on PS2 units?
"And the book says: 'We may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us.'"
So which plays PS2 games better? 60 or 80GB? Any difference?

The 60 Gig unit has about 99% backwards compatibility, and the 80 Gig somewhere around 80% to 85% (and most issues are just things like stuttering cut-scenes) ... Sony has an official compatability query form.
Just plug in your game and see what the issues are if any with either or both model PS3.

20/60's have PS2 EE and Graphics chips in them. They play in the range of 90% of the games.
80's have just the Graphics chip. It emulates the EE processing and as such compatability is diminished. Range is somewhere around 75-80% (and probably a bit higher).
No new systems will have any PS2 BC to them (so all 40's and anything else produced from this point on).
