Default NES Controllers with stiff buttons

I have a couple of NES controllers and the 2 red buttons are really stiff. When hooked up I need to push down really hard to navigate through a game. One of them is so bad it doesn't even register any presses.

Anyway I can get these working again? I unscrewed one and didn't see any gunk or anything like that. But the buttons are still stiff.

Usually just a quick cleaning of the button contacts w/ rubbing alcohol works for me. Clean the PCB vigorously, and the carbon pads lightly.
