Ill have to put in another vote for final fantasy.

Personally, I also like (reading from my own collection of free music):
    Axelay(first level at least)
    Darius Twin(perhaps not that great...)
    F Zero
    Gradius 3
Metal Warriors(never played the game, but a friend said the music was good)
    Phalanx
    Super R-Type(I really like)
Sim City(perhaps I only like it because I played the game so much)
    Star Fox
    Sunset Riders(first level at least)

    Genesis

    Contra
    Gunstar Heroes
Shining Force(Good music, but no good .gym files)
    Shining Force 2(ditto)
    Sonic
    Streets of Rage(nostalgic, at least)
Thunder Force 2(I like the music to the first level, but you wont find a .gym of that either)
Rarest games in collection: (R8) Chavez II for SNES / (R7) Star Gunner (Telesys) for Atari 2600
Game Collection -- Game Commercials -- Favorite Game: Secret of Mana
    Wii code: 2572 7867 9177 9866 Smash: 0259-0110-4026

For SNES, Actraiser and Super R-Type are my personal favorites.

For Genesis, I occasionally find myself humming stuff from Sonic 1-3 and Sonic & Knuckles. The best of those would be the Star Light Zone theme in Sonic 1.

For the Genesis, there are a lot of great tunes. Fire Shark is a personal favorite, a lot of '70s AOR rock, ala Blue Oyster Cult. Whoever composed the music got the "guitar" tones just right. I finally wrote the 'classics' review for my website, so this game is still fresh in my mind.

After that, I'd go with anything by Tecnosoft -- Herzog Zwei, Thunder Force 3, Thunder Force 4, Devil's Crash. All magnificent.

There's Treasure, of course, which is always just a little side of goofy. I'd bet their resident musicians have a couple Frank Zappa records hidden away somewhere.

There's the Capcom arcade conversions: Strider, Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Forgotten Worlds. I've always been partial to the sound of those early Genesis games. Kinda like Radiohead's "Kid A," and pretty unique.

Last, but certainly not least, there's the legendary Yuzo Koshiro. Revenge of Shinobi, with its classic kung-fu movie vibe (it always reminds me of "Enter the Dragon"), and the first two Streets of Rage's.

This all goes to show me how much I miss videogame music. It's all been pretty much replaced with radio-friendly pop. Gimmie some real music!
