I dont want to grind my systems cart slot, I think it would be easier just to buy a used japan megadrive-1 and place the top half of the shell on the US models base shell. Anyone ever done this? is it even possible?

you could bypass the tabs with a game Gennie
I was wondering the same thing myself. I was also wondering if it would be easier to just import a JP Mega Drive and mod it to be region free.
Its all about the appearance!!! I dont want a game genie poking out or a ground up cartridge slot. The top half of the J-megadrive is nicer anyway, with the blue button and all...
and I dont want to use the japanese system because of constant power spikes at my house (its old) and Im tired of switching plugs in between step down convertors.
I can get a bare ass japanese mega drive with no hook ups/controllers for 8 dollars, thats another reason.

I would just use a Game Genie as I managed to get several for around $3 each, I don't know how that would look worse than a Franken-Genesis. If you're just using the bottom of a standard Genesis as is, it won't be region free. Why not just get a Genesis 3 system since you can fit Japanese games in it without modding it?
HA! Awesome reference. It made me laugh like an idiot in the store.
Denmark: Home of The Little Mermaid and heavy sarcasm.
That's why I made sure to mention it was my wife's. I never buy that stuff on my own. It was cold, fizzy and I had no soda left, so this was the closest I could get. Either way, the talk about partially exposed butt-holes made sure that my laptop had overpriced carbonated water spat all over it!
Here is another option if the shell halves don't match up. Could you just move the motherboard from the US Genesis to the Japanese Mega Drive?

What I ended up doing with my MD was removing the cartridge lock, which is actually a plastic piece under the top of the MD. Once you do that, if you have a good soldering hand, solder in a language switch, and then you are good to go. The Genesis carts will fit right in without the lock being in place, and you can play your MD games just fine as well.
