I've beaten about 20 of them and I'm going through a few more now.
Anyone have any insane goals like this before?

With a humble heart, on bended knee...
It's not that insane a goal. There are about 100 RPGs on the system so you're already at least 1/5th of the way there.
My question though is...why would you want to? A good chunk of them are garbage.
Yeah. Have fun with Legend of Legaia.
And are you counting Arc the Lad collection as 1 game or 3 games?
i counted it as 3 seperate games. as really it is
i've played through plenty of crappy games. part ofthe challenge

It's hard enough making a list of all of them.
Let alone owning them.
Or beating them.

You know, I'm just happy to find the time to play and beat games as it is. There's no way I could force myself through all of the RPGs on the PS1...I haven't got the time and I sure as hell don't have the desire to play through some of that drivel. Hell, I couldn't even play through Baten Kaitos Origins on Gamecube and that game generally kicked ass.
I do get a kick out of playing through entire franchises, though. I'm mostly done with the Call of Duty series (just need to play the PSP, DS and NGage games), I'm slowly chipping away at the Medal of Honor series (though Underground on GBA will probably shatter my will) and tackling the Metal Gear series was a blast (confession: I still have to beat Acid 2 ). It's neat seeing a series evolve and change according to a variety of factors (dev team, producer, market conditions, hardware, etc)
Now if only I could force myself through Ghost Recon 2: 2007 so that I can make some more headway into that series... even then, I'm going to have to play GRAW on 360 and again on PC since both are apparently different

after this maybe you should try to beat all the platformers on the NES .

Well, I want to eventually own every PlayStation RPG, so I guess that means I want to sooner or later play through all of them too. Too bad I probably haven't even completed 10 of them.
For the last few years, I've had a goal to play through every Game Boy game I own. I have 44 black and white and Game Boy Color games, and another 14 games for Game Boy Advance. I started with the b/w games, and I've finished all but one (there are some games that never officially end, of course). I only have a couple of the dual compatible games left, and I don't have that many GBC-exclusives to begin with. At times the goal does feel crazy since some of the ones I got are pretty lousy, and others were just insanely difficult (took me at least a couple years to get through Boxxle). But it's been a worthwhile experience overall, and since most of the time has been spent killing time at school, it's not like I had anything better to do. And maybe it's just me, but I like to push my way through games that aren't so great now and then. It's gives me new appreciation and perspective on games that are truly great. If all you try to play are the best of the best, you'll never realize how stellar they really are in comparison to everything else.
Once I acquire and play Extreme Pinball and Pro Pinball: Timeshock!, I can say I've played every pinball game released on the PS1 in the US.
And that's as close as I'll ever come to this.
(While I'm on the subject of PS1 pinball games, avoid Kiss Pinball at all costs. Seriously. Worst pinball video game ever.)
