Default is it safe to use a Sega CD game in an xbox?

I've recently re-acquired Sonic CD for $4.00 complete

Problem - I don't have room in my entertainment center for my genesis/sega cd/32x combo (nor do I have all the empty power plugs either!)

So, I notice the genesis emulator NeoGenesis will run sega cd games. Is it safe to use my Sonic CD in my xbox drive? Is there any chance it could damage the disc? what about the drive?

    Thanks to anyone that replies

Whoa, I have a NeoGenesis emulator on my rom filled Xbox. Are you saying I could throw my Shining Force CD in there and it would work? What about Turbo Duo stuff? A friend is borrowing the Xbox so I can't just throw this stuff in there to try it out.

I just inserted Sonic CD and clicked play inserted CD (or whatever it says) in NeoGenesis and it worked fine. Although it'll have to be an original disc. While an xbox drive can read burned DVD-Rs, most can't read burned CD-Rs (although this depends on the brand of DVD drive your xbox uses). Mine will read DVD-R and CD-RW, but its pretty finicky about CDs. But yeah if you're using an original CD it should work fine

I don't know about Turbo-Duo support. I don't have any turbo games to test it with.

Wild, I'm not sure how I missed this info. I recently sold my JVC Xeye, since I barely used it but I kept most of my Sega CD games just in case I ever decided to get back into them and didn't feel like searching for the Lunar's and Shining Force's of the library. I can't wait to try it.

I might have to get a modded XB if Turbo Duo games work. Anyone with confirmation?

If it does work, a softmod will do it. No need for a hardware mod. I only softmodded mine and love it

Haven't played around with 'em, but people report that the Xbox port of Mednafen works peachy. Lord knows I love me some Mednafen (the Xbox version has the edge in that it actually has a GUI...and it's one that doesn't suck, if you can believe it).

Also, if you're paranoid about the safety of your SegaCD discs or your Xbox, just rip 'em to BIN/CUE and NeoGenesis will play 'em peachy. No need to put your originals in harm's way (there's about a snowball's chance in hell of my Snatcher ever coming back out of its case now that I've ripped a CCD/IMG of it that I can convert to anything else I like)

Well, I don't want to cross any lines. I'm not sure how permissive the mods of this forum are when it comes to modding talk.

But everything you need to know can be found at http://www.xbox-scene.org

But softmodding an xbox is simple. All you really need is a copy of Splinter Cell (the original for xbox - not the greatest hits version), a usb flash drive and an xbox usb adapter. Download a modified save file for splinter cell which loads the softmod exploit onto the flash drive, copy it to the xbox hard drive from the flash drive, then load it in the game, it installs the exploit and BAM you're done.

    Any questions let me know.

Is there any case in which you can put something remotely disc-like into some kind of functioning, read-only disc drive and damage either the disc or the drive?

The only thing that comes to mind is putting a mini-CD into a tray that doesn't have the mini-CD indentation, and even that wouldn't be fatal. (And of course attempting to play a data CD on an audio system can do bad things to the speakers, but I think most players have safeguards against that now.)

Until I watched a CD-ROM go apeshit and shatter an MSOffice disc, I would have said, "no". I've also seen cases where cd players and consoles would leave a nice, deep scratch in a disc, so anymore I'm all about playing it safe.

I didn't know there was a Sega CD emu for the Xbox. I am now going to be pressured into getting one on the horizon since SCD addons are nearly $30 around here and an Xbox is $50-60.

Well, those would not be "functioning" drives then. (That is, they would likely ruin any disc placed in them, including ones that would actually be intended for those drives.)

More or less, yeah. I mean, there's a procedure to follow, but that's the skeleton of it.

I'm not sure. I know there was something for the original Splinter Cell, Mechwarrior, and 007 Agent under Fire. There may be others, I have no idea. I always used Splinter Cell because that's what I ended up buying

Coldb33r thanks for the info. I am actually looking for very legitimate stuff with an Xbox. I have a sega CD (non working) and plenty of games which I'd love to play on an xbox instead of plugging in those bricks for the Sega/Sega CD. I've been looking around that website for a short while now, but never saw anything about the Sega CD. Thanks again.

Well, once you've got a modded xbox, simply load onto it the emulator "NeoGenesis". Once you've got that emulator loaded, there's an option that says "Play inserted CD". It's extremely simple. The hard part is just getting it modded (and that's not even that hard).

NeoGenesis makes playing a Sega CD game as easy as playing a rom. Here is the homepage for NeoGenesis, where you can see screencaps of various games and can see the Play Inserted CD option.

Note: I'm not condoning piracy in any way, I only use roms and CD games that I actually own.

    I checked out Zophars Domain:

HuGo-X v8 07/31/03 Turbo Grafx 16/PC Engine A port of Hu-Go! for the XBOX by Xport, this has excellent compatibility and plays real TG16 CDs

    I've never tried it though.

Mednafen is by far a better (more compatible) emulator than Hugo (or any other current TG16/PCE CD emulator right now, commercial or otherwise). The interface on the XBox version is pretty nice (which is the one thing keeping most people from trying the PC version, as its just CLI-based).

Can you confirm if System Card 3.0 games work using this? I would love to know--as I have a copy of Rondo and no Turbo Duo to play it on. Also, if they do work, how good is the emulation?
