Default The four major demographics and how Wii can score them

In my mind, there are four major demogrphics in the video game world. These demographics are all very different, and Wii may well be the first console to appeal to all four. Similarly, if forum pessimists like are right, Wii may fall flat like Bandai/Apple Pippin (which, interestingly, also had a bunch of tech junk no one needed and was labelled as a "cheap computer" at 600 bucks).

The first demographic is the hardcore gamer. People like the ones on this forum. The hardcore gamer loves retrogames, so the VC is a big plus. The hardcore gamer loves innovation and genres like JRPG, space shooter, and adventure, which have fallen out of favor. The Wii brings the potential to revive a lot of these genres through open and acessible development and the Wiimote brings about potential for innovation and new gameplay. The only downside is that very purist hardcore gamers may hate the Wiimote, but for them the Virtual Console may be worth the cost of entry if there are enough new titles and translated titles.

The second demographic is the softcore gamer. He is looked down upon by the hardcore gamer yet looks up at the hardcore gamer with disgust and confusion due to kitschy tastes. He asks, "PS2 or Xbox"? and reserves every Madden and NCAA game that comes out. The softcore gamer's only other real interest is FPS games like Halo. Sadly, this stupid gamer is the main demogrphic today and all the schlock that sells proves that. Wii can appeal to these people if PFS and sports games work as well on the console as we hope. This softcore has little if any appreciation for classic games, so it's unlikely Virtual Console will hold much weight for them. It all rests upon the success of games like Red Steel and Madden. If these don't turn out well, this audience is gone.

The third demographic is the casual gamer. This gamer occasionally plays a round of multiplayer with their friends, and occasionally freeware PC games. They know little about games and feel that they "contribute to a lack of focus" or something else stupid. Probably a fan of professional sports like the softcore gamer, and also a fan of but cannot differentiate well between soft and hardcore game players. Games like Wii sports will appeal to this demographic and they may occasionally try something like Mario Galaxy. Usually has some nostalgic memories of Mario or Sonic, and annoyingly as hell refers to Genesis as "Sega" and NES as "Nintendo". Wii's success in this demographic lies completely on viral marketing success. This, more than anything else, is up to Wii the fans. We need to have people play Wii when they're at our house or whatever, and if (when) they're impressed the low price may sell them on a console.

The fourth demographic is a hell of a tough nut to crack. This is the non-gamer. This is your mom, your dad, your grandpa, your ultra-religious cousin. This demographic knows little. They need games like Wii sports and you to be there with them. Nintendo has been the first company, in my mind, to have truly succeeded with this demographic as demonstrated with Brain Age and Big Brain Academy. This non-gamer can be weened through people like us onto simple games like Wii sports and simple VC fare, and hopefully move up on their own.

If Nintendo can capture the hearts of all these demographics, Wii win. Otherwise, Wii lose. The biggest deciding factor is the Nintendo fans. We need to try Wii with everyone we know and watch the revolution spread. If we go out there and be proactive in lieu of Nintendo's bad marketing, for the first time in over a decade Nintendo will be the king.

If Nintendo can do to the Wii as they are doing with the DS, they will be able to hold their own. People have came to my store just to buy a DS and the Brain games. I've also seen a group of 5 or 6 people playing the Brain Academy game and getting very into it. If they can translate that kind of experience over to the Wii, then they'll help recapture the magic videogames once had.

Since when does playing FPS's make you "stupid" or classify you as "soft-core"? Your logic is flawed. D+

This whole post neglects the one demographic that Nintendo has already conceded defeat to and isn't even trying to attract...we'll call them the "high-tech" gamer. This type of gamer likes the latest in cutting edge graphics, sound, and presentation that modern consoles are capable of. I'd say this describes more people than three of your categories put together.

I'm buying a Wii and wish Nintendo success, but then again I wish Sony and MS success too. I like video games not the companies that make the consoles...I'm just funny that way.

I'm not saying that. I'm saying that softcore gamers tend to play almost all sports games and FPS games. Not all FPS games are bad, but you'd be hard pressed to argue that there aren't tons -- tons being pumped out as we speak that are generic clones and still sell to the softcore demographic because they're "badass" or something.

As for the "high-tech" gamer (which fits into a completely different classification demographic), I think DS vs. PSP would show that they are not a huge factor. Otherwise Xbox wouldn't have been outsold 5-to-1 by PS2.

If you really didn't understand what he was saying there, I feel sorry for you. The 'softcore' gamer is, on average, the guy that has JUST the XBox, or maybe XBox and PS2, no GC in sight. They only have sports titles, FPSers, and maybe maybe a couple others thrown in there. They are the ones that say classic games 'suck' because they aren't new flashy and advanced. I'd call about half of the the 'softcore' gamers the same ones that are 'high-tech' gamers. They care about how the latest Madden game looks, not about innovation. And, Doom Gaze hit the nail on the head with his DS vs PSP and XBox vs PS2 example, there just isn't THAT many 'high tech' gamers. Thankfully.

I don't know where you came up with those demos but I like the term "softcore gamer."

Your conclusion is fairly obvious, "if Nintendo can capture the hearts and minds of all these demos they'll win." Well no shit!

Don't take offense to this, you get an A for effort but the quality of your analysis fails.

Uh, the whole demographics thing brings up irritating memories of doing my 1st year in marketing.

What you ought to make clear is that those demographics are by no means seperate and distinct, there's a lot of overlap.

The analysis was mostly based on the fact that unlike Nintendo's previous systems, Wii can appeal to all of them. In addition, it was about how things may go down with each one. It was about which parts of Wii appealed to each one and which didn't.

Obviously to whomever the money goes wins, but this is about why each major group may or may not like the console, as opposed to the past where Nintendo was for teh kasual kiddiez and the hardcore.

This is one of the most ridiculous topics I ever seen. What is the love affair with Nintendo?

    Have fun.

This is about whether Nintendo wins or fails next gen, and how Wii's features may or may not appeal to the average person. Not about your pathetic quest to prove that regurgitated generic testosterone-charged games with a userbase whose combined intelligence rivals an avergae gibbon are more meritorious than a great RPG, adventure game, shooter, side-scroller, or action-adventure.

Then why did you spend 4/5 of your initial post, and half of your last one insulting people?

That has nothing to do with Nintendo "winning or failing" whatever the hell that actually means.

Is it really that important to you which multi-billion company squeezes more money out of it's customer base than the others?

    Really?

I'm just here for the games

4/5th of my initial post "insulting" people? I said that softcore gamers have a huge preference for FPS and sports games while others tend to be more well rounded. I said softcore gamers tend to have more mainstream interests. Even if you found that insulting, it was one part of a large thing.

Hell, though, someone already responded to you about what you say before you said it:

By insulting many of the demographics you listed, automatically this is getting locked because you are just getting flamed. Please refrain from calling gamers stupid just because they enjoy a certain type of game.

Please Wiiturn to your normal wiisness. Nothing to wii here.
