Default MGS: Twin Snakes - Can a non MGS player like me enjoy it?

I'll admit it. I never played a single MGS game. Ever. Never ever. Like never.

It looks like I could enjoy it. But I've never ever played an MGS game ever.

Can someone like me get into the game?

Did it, done it, worked, played it for a couple weeks straight and beat it like 5 or 6 times.

    Yeah, it can happen.

Well it's just an update of the Original MGS and since most people playing MGS never played MG or MG2 SS you should be fine.

How is the stealth element? I like stealth in games. Is it anything like BG&E was or the WindWaker stuff? Or is it completely different?

Better than BG&E, by a lot.

I've never played a Splinter Cell game, but I'd assume they're fairly similar.

It's largely stealth based now that I think about it. Plus, pretty much every character in MGS is a total badass character, it's home to one of my absolute most favorite video game moments, and it has some excellent and well varied boss fights. There really isn't much more you can ask of a stealth/action game.

Generally, MGS:TTS is considered easier and "broken" to some extent, due to the inclusion of a first-person view when the original was only designed for third-person. However I enjoy it still.

It is the most stealth based out of the three MGS games, so I would say it is a good place to start. It's also VERY helpful to know the story of this game, if you intend to grasp any of the story for MGS2.

It's a good game, and I would give it a try for the $10-15 you should be able to find it for.

Well not I'm not a big MGS fan either, saw the game a while ago for cheap and got it, played it about 40 minutes and than put it back on the shelf. It looks like a really fun game but I just can get into it.

I enjoyed Twin Snakes when I had my Gamecube but the Gameplay is broken due to the fact that the original wasnt designed with the use of the first person perspective in mind.

Also the soundtrack of Twin Snakes doesnt hold up , while good simply does not stand up to the brilliant originals and the voice acting is off , even though they got most of the original cast back to do the REmake -even David Hayter for Snake- they all seem bored in the Twin Snakes lol.

Of course the big + is the updated graphics when compared to the original PSX version although they are not near the quality of MGS2 on PS2/Xbox and dont come close to MGS3:Snake Eater.

    WARNING : fanboy rant

Its difficult for me to understand how any gamer cant see the brilliance of the Metal Gear games especially the "Solid" series even though I know some gamers dont get into the whole stealth thing I just think they are depriving themselves of some of the greatest videogames ever made.

    LONG LIVE KOJIMA!

    k fanboy rant over :P

Oh and FYI the order of the Metal Gear games and main storyline just for those new to the series (not included are side-stories ala 'acid etc):

    #1.Metal Gear Solid:Snake Eater/Subsistance

#2.Metal Gear - MSX or the hacked up NES version also on the Second disc of MGS3:subsistance

#3.Metal Gear 2-MSX or on the Second disc of MGS3:subsistance

#4.Metal Gear Solid/the Twin Snakes- PSX/PSone and Gamecube

#5. Metal Gear Solid 2/Substance- PS2 and Xbox

#6. will be Metal Gear Solid 4:Guns of the Patriots- PS3...and possibly Xbox360?

Basically if you have a PS2 you can play every Metal Gear game of the main storyline made up to this point (until Metal Gear Solid 4 is released for PS3) since Substance comes with the two original Metal Gears that were released on the MSX.

I didn't much care for it. I loved Metal Gear Solid, but Twin Snakes' control system was horrible/clunky and the AI was beyond broken.

First person viewpoint wasn't much of an issue (didn't Integral implement it anyway as a nice little bonus?), but trying to play with the gamecube controller's backward-ass setup and content with some flat out terrible AI design was quite the chore. IMO you may be better off scrounging up a GH copy of MGS and calling it squarsies

edit - as a new player to the MG series, you may wind up enjoying it quite a bit, though! Don't let my jaded perspective put you off from trying it for yourself (shit dude, it's like $15 new)

    You'll like it.

As a huge fan of the series, I say the original is easily better.

I hated some of the dialogue changes they made for the story, voice over issues, and ONE particular scene.

Baker + Snake after Ocelot fight. Baker won't cooperate with Snake, so Snake pulls a gun out on Baker, and starts to threaten him? Wait, what?!

Stupid move on whoever decided to put that ridiculous un-Solid Snake part in for Solid Snake. Snake is cool and collected, not a spaz who loves to threaten old men's lives.

Actually I thought it was a BIG ISSUE since with the new first person view you could simply take out the gaurds on various levels with ease and then run through the whole thing undetected.

That feature alone made Twin Snakes faaar too easy.

Yeah Twin Snakes was good but it had some MAJOR faults once you think about it.

I do agree that it would be a good game for those new to the series or not good at stealth type games like MGS or Splinter Cell.

    once again AGREED

Many of the more "hardcore" Metal Gear fans hated the change in some of the voices mainly that of Mei-ling if I remember correctly.

$12 actually. We clearanced it the other day. Which is what prompted me to ask. It was our last copy too. Brand new in shiny packaging.

I'm picking it up today after I get off work. Along with probably Star Fox Assault. (I promised myself I'd get it when it dropped to PC status. It is a PC, isn't it? At least it's $19.99.)

I think I might enjoy it. At least I won't waste too much if I don't.

Sweet mother of god do i love me some Splinter Cell. Another nice introduction would be the Thief games and possibly Deus Ex (all depends on how you want to play that one ). Thief allowed for some nice flexibility on stealth vs action whereas Thief 2 really punished you for not being stealthy.

Complete and total tangent, but the voice actress for her was Kim Mai Guest. The spelling is a little off, but it's reasonably close to Kim Mae Guest, the actress that played Commander Jassic in Warhawk. It's interesting that there's no photos of Kim Mae Guest anywhere online, so unless someone is better at stalking than me, we just have to theorize if they're the same person or not. IMDB doesn't help, but then again it doesn't have an entry for Warhawk and doesn't credit it for two of the other actors (Hatch! and Kreel!) , it can't really be considered conclusive proof that it's not her.

You gotta wonder why she hides herself so well online and sticks to just voice work. Maybe a prior stalker? Maybe the scathing reviews of her acting ability in Warhawk? Maybe an oppressive husband?

Just something I noticed while playing Warhawk the other day.

I need to play another game with bad FMV soon so i can start obsessing over another b actor/actress.

My friend Frank introduced me to Theif way back when the first came out. I never got it though as my computer was too slow at the time. But back then the concept of "Stealth action" was foreign to me. It wasn't until I guess BG&E that I actually got to try it.

Back to MGS.. Wow.. this is some hard stuff. I may have to consult some FAQ's for help. It's neat. But how many times have i been spotted now?

We'll see. I'm having fun though. Maybe I'll get used to it as time goes on.

As for the controls, I don't know what the PSX controls were like so I'm not spoiled. I actually prefer the Cube controller.

I say play the original MGS first and then twin snakes, IMO MGS was the best one. MGS:TS was good too, but it almost feels like a different game. They changed alot of cool stuff for some reason, like I could never figure out why they took out the awesome classical music in the intro when snake is swimming and insted put some weird techno action beat into twin snakes. Definetly play one of them though, MGS is one of the best games ever created it deserves at least a rental if anything.

I think it is pretty good. If you don't have a PS2/Psone then it is an opportunity to try the game out with newer graphics. Also the game would not be too expensive nowadays either.

    Cheers
