Anybody else addicted to Magic the Gathering: Online?

Around christmas break I got bored, and used my newly accquired wireless internet to download Magic the Gathering Online. You can go to wizards.com to download it. It's free, but you have to buy packs and decks of cards to play with.

Anyway, over the years various threads have been started, A LOT of people here have played the card game at some point or another. This game is so good online, I just can't say enough good things about it. Anybody else have any experience with it?

If you've ever been slightly curious about it, and you have questions, feel free to ask as well.

I used to play it a while back but i stoped. Maybe i will get into it again if i can find some spair cash.

I'd be far more interested if it weren't so damned expensive. I play the actual card game all the time, but paying full price for a virtual product doesn't make sense to me.

Yes it is a great online game but by far the most expensive as well. I'd rather and did buy the real cards instead when I was into MTG. You can have fun with a minimal investment too but it's designed for the long term hardcore players. It's also a great way to learn the basics of MTG.

Hmm, about a year and a half ago I downloaded it and bought just enough to start a sealed deck mini-competition thing (whatever they do there, seemed the cheapest way). But then real life caught up and I didn't finish playing my games. Which means I've still spent money on virtual cards which I'll not play again. Argh!

I played the card game A LOT when I was 18-22 or so. I refused to rebuy digital versions of the cards I already owned, so I passed on the online game.

I fell out of Magic when the expansions started coming quicker than I could keep up and they started adding crazy abilities that only could be countered by keeping up.


EDIT: Anyone interested in several thousand Unlimited through 5th?

A program called Apprentice was and still is better because it's free.

Luckily, that was an addiction I got over. really fun game, I used to play the sealed deck tourneys all the time.

Yeah, I remember Apprentice also. It takes the whole collecting and only building out of what you have thing out of the game though. It was a very good program

i'd be all over the mtg online game IF you could use older cards ,i'd buy virtual packs of legends

but yeah its just the OMG LATEST sets you can play, and if the online game is like the real life enviorment ..every few months they ban the previious set and make you purchase the new sets if you want to stay competitive.

effective marketing setup, but just not my style of gaming

(i know type 1 exists still but either nbody wants to play it or they have just 1 turn kill decks.)

I miss the fun and creative days of magic before people downloaded thier decks from the internet.

i never understood why people like that online game. the program Apprentice is awesome, its free and has any card ever. did i mention its free?

I have no experience with Apprentice (Magic Work Station is another name I've heard thrown around). From what I've read though, these are just cheaper substitutes to the real thing. Magic Online has THOUSANDS of people online at a time, even at 3 in the morning. There are tournaments running constantly with all sorts of prize support. On top of tournaments with decks you've made yourself, there are drafts and leagues going on all the time as well. Trading is a blast. There is a marketplace set up, as well as several other trading rooms, for buying, selling, and trading cards. There is even a room where there is an auction going at all times. Also, Magic Online has rule support built in, so there's never an arguement about who's right.

I'd would say it's more of a negative thing to have free access to every card ever like that. I find it fun to try and earn the best cards. I don't think it's necessarily MORE fun for every single person out there to be using a top tier deck.

Some of the older sets are starting to get reprinted now in Magic Online. They've already released Mirage, Visions is scheduled, and there's even talk of Ice Age by the end of the year. Cards don't necessarily get banned in MTGO either. Like the real card game, card sets rotate out after a certain amount of time, but once they rotate out, it's not like they're unusable. They're just not useable in the Standard format. Every card is useable in older formats, which stil get just as much play as the newer format.

Again, MTGO cards actually maintain value, some upwards of $100+. It's just like the real card game. I've heard plenty of people argue that "it's not the real thing, you're paying for a picture of a card". At the same time though, is paying $100+ for a piece of cardboard any better. The fact that you can go online at 3 in the morning and play against hundreds of people beats the cardboard anyway IMO. Also, if you can form a complete set of any set, with the exception of the classic sets (Mirage, etc), you can redeem them for a factory sealed set of the real cards.

Anyway, I really went on a schpeel there. This game is a blast though, just trying to spread the word.
