Any Culdcepters in the house?

Howdy, y'all.

A while back I picked up a copy of Culdcept in a trade but let it sit on my shelf unplayed. Two days ago, I picked it up and popped it into my PS2.

All I can say is that it's taken over my life.

Anyone else here play a lot of this? I've been playing round after round, collecting cards to add to my book.

Now, to find other players in the area to go up against...

I've been playing the crap out of it since I picked it up two months ago. I love it.. and I've never played ANY card based battle games.. but I like strategies so this suits me just fine.

I had to start over with a new character a few weeks ago though; when I realized that I'd been blowing through every battle of the story mode and not stopping to replay NPCs to beef up my deck (A big mistake later in the game as your opponents toughen up and you have no variety in your deck <slaps forehead>.).

The game's learning curve is somewhat steep; but it all kind of fell in place one night when I realized you approach it like Chess.. the more furure possibilities you can account for in each move affecting your future standing.. and figure out your best present move.. the better.

There seems to be a controversy in the couple of forums I've found that the dice throw is skewed in favor of the AI. I'm still out on that opinion but I'm starting to believe the whole thing IS entirely random. I mean I'm sure that if I looked at my games over time.. I've gotten lucky successive rolls as many times as the opponent has. While it can easily appear at times that the game is "cheating" (I'll admit there's been times I wanted to throw the controller at the TV.. in fact.. I DID kinda' break my wireless controller by throwing it too hard on the bed during a "round"!).. I don't think it does and besides I've seen many games turn tables either way after the other player has a substantial lead. That's one thing I love about it.

I wanna' take this game over to my friend's house and try and teach it to him so we can play together. He's not into strategies or RPGs but he liked to play board and card games with his family when he was a kid and it kind of reminds me of a French card game we used to play called Mille Bornes. I'll bet he'd enjoy it once he learned it.

This game begs for online play and as far as I could find out the Saturn or DC version may have had it (but they were imports). Also as far as I could tell.. after the game gained a cult following and got some "publicity" it was planned for a rerelease (There was supposedly only 50,000 original copies pressed.. but that seems like an awfully low number for ANY game if you ask me, whether it was unknown or not.) but that was cancelled as well.

I can kick butt on the AI now.. but I'm dying to play a real person and multiplayer games are something I've never been into very much. That says volumes for my endorsement.

BTW.. this game is priced dirt cheap at Gamecrazy's now.. if you can find it.

I haven't played in a while, but for a long time I was hooked on this one too! I think I know where there's a copy for $40 or $45. Probably high, but it's available at least.

It's been a while since I played, but I've been thinking about firing it up lately; just can't find any good games of Magic, so I'll settle for the next best thing.

Check you local Gamestop/EBGames if you haven't picked this up. Last time I saw one there, they had it priced at $7.99.

I adore this game...a perfect combination of two of my favorite non-video games in one beautiful package. I should really fire this one up again one of these days.

I love that goddamned game, but I've been stuck on the third or fourth board, for, like, two years. Meaning I got stuck there for about a week and quit playing it two years ago. Maybe I should start that game over...

This is an awesome game. I don't see the similarity to Mille Bornes, though. I remember when the game was relatively new, it was selling for $40-60 on Ebay. I actually bought it along with Final Fantasy X-2 (which was also new and expensive), but I got scammed. I really wanted the game, but decided to wait for deal. I eventually grabbed it at GameStop for $7.99 used and mint.

Well.. only in the sense that MB is a card game. In Mille Bornes you're kind of running a race and in Culdcept it helps to be the fastest around the board. Granted the premise (there is no "story" in MB) is totally different as in MB you're driving Cars. But in MB you also play 1 on 1 (although I best prefer MB in teams of two.. it's great MP fun) and serve your cards on the other side as they "progress" on the race/journey.

There is no "real estate" aspect in Mille Bornes as in Culdcept (which HAS been compared to a cross between Monopoly & MTG) but you can equate road obstacles and such in MB to them in that they affect the other side in the same ways. Mileage cards would correspond to the die roll.. and such.

..Or maybe I'm just abstracting. I need medication.

Anyways.. I've always thought Mille Bornes would make an interesting video "board" game. I have an old shareware PC version of it around from the W95 era.. but it's graphics look like an NES game.

Great to see other players here. I've been plugging at it for the last few days, and I'm still having fun.

Question, though... Does anyone know if there are any Culdcept forums or strategy sites? GameFAQs is surprisingly light on info for this game, as it seems like there'd be a good cult following for it somewhere.

Thanks for bringing this game back up...I blew about half of the weekend getting back into my deck! Back when I beat it, it was the only game I touched for a good month...very addictive! Click HERE for a pretty good Culdcept forum I joined when I was in my medal phase. It's not very active anymore, but there is some good tips and strategy buried in the forums. You do have to set up an account to get in, but it's not a big deal. Send a message to "ondeck" if you get in.

I picked this game up on a recommendation from someone on these forums, but I can't quite remember who that was consarnit.

Anyway, I do really enjoy the game but I got it at a bad time (right around the birth of my son) and didn't get a chance to get into it.

Of course now I want to go back and play it and my second son is due to be born any day now, so I'm not sure *when* I'll get the time now

I had never played this before yesterday morning, but I spent about ten hours yesterday playing it, and am anxious to get off line and start playing it again. It's as good as I hoped it would be, and better than I thought it would be.

So far, I've beaten the first six or seven boards. There are still a lot of aspects of gameplay I'm not clear on (the booklet is pretty much completely indecipherable), but hopefully I'll get a better handle on them as I play more. Now if I could only find someone on my skill level to play against...
