Doubt we'll see a media player sorta thing anytime soon. With Nintendo's way of thinking, they would rather just keep a gaming system for games . Besides. There is always the PSP (which my two friends that have them only seem to use for TV shows, movies and music).Originally Posted by zerohero
The noise level of the rumor that Nintendo will soon be releasing a redesigned Nintendo DS system has gotten so high that the company's been forced to poke its head out and comment.
Earlier this week several retail outlets and Japanese media publications have been reporting that the inevitable Nintendo DS redesign would be coming sooner than expected, and that an official announcement (or even a stealth launch) could happen as soon as next week.
"Clearly, Nintendo DS continues to be one of the most popular and talked-about video game systems available," said a Nintendo of America representative this morning. "Through 2005, some 13 million units have sold worldwide. Nintendo is always looking for ways to improve its games and systems, but we have nothing to announce at this time."

I dunno. I personally like how the DS looks and feels right now. I suppose if they make it better in terms of design it will be a good thing, but ONLY if they retain the screen sizes. Everything nowadays is about "smaller", and I do not paricularly agree with that.
Well, it's Monday 16 and nothing's been announced other than Nintendo saying there won't be a redesign soon. They told Games Industry Biz this morning:

Oh well, so much for the big announcement...

Does anyone have any idea when this update may occur. For I have a DS with an ebgames warranty so if it breaks they will replace it. So if they release a new model I will make sure that my DS has "an accident".
Do you guys know if ebgames is like Best Buy where they give you the newer model of the product?
Does anyone know if this new model of the DS will be released anytime soon?
..what new model of DS?Originally Posted by danthemanuno

I don't really want a redesign
The DS is selling like MOFOS right now. Why would they want to put a redesign on the market right now? They usually do this when the sales of a unit starts to decline. It would be pretty awful timing if they released one now, and wouldn't make very good economic sense. I think it would confuse many consumers too to release a redesign this early.

The moral is, don't **** with Uncle Tim when he's been drinking!
True. Why ruin a good thing? I am actually astounded at how well the DS is selling right now. It has been out for some time, and I can recall seeing literally walls of DS units at Toys R US not too long ago. And then the holiday hits, and the DS is gone...everywhere. Well, this must have been an unexpected thing for Nintendo to say the least, and can only be a good thing when it comes to new games on the horizon.Originally Posted by rbudrick
They probably will do a redesign because of the success of the machine, but I don't see it happening until the unit as we now know it slows down in sales.
Why not just make it an alternate controller for the revolution? It's got about as many buttons and a gyro/tilt sensor couldn't be that hard to add to it, right? Or, hell, not all the games will be gyro-functional. Like the NES, SNES, N64 of GameCube ones.Originally Posted by hezeuschrist
Redesign for a new/improved function? Cheaper/smaller chips? Better/cheaper screens? Cheaper/less costly parts? Who knows? Besides, even if it is redesigned, it won't be on the morket for a while (I think?). It was 5-6 months between the micro launch and its announcement, right?Originally Posted by zektor
Nintendo rep stopped by the store this morning. She said they had a conference call and that it mentioned something about it being on the website. She seemed pretty clueless, but did mention she might have heard it was going to lose the GBA port (something I had already expected). The GBA is dead to me. DEAD!!
I made a pretty good mock-up guess-picture. Some might say it's "funny". Others might know more.
