I received my XBox copy of the game from amazon.com today and I am very pleased. It does exist and EB/GameStop are a$$holes for not carrying it. I have unfortunately never played the arcade version of SP, but I played the first XBox game to death and have been having a ball with the PS2 version of Coast to Coast. Can't say the same for the PSP version, but that's a different story.

I had already done a side by side of the Outrun 2 easy course on PS2 version vs. the XBox Outrun 2 before getting my copy today. The result of comparing the new XBox conversion of Coast to Coast with the PS2 version yields the same result: This game is meant to run on XBox, but the PS2 version is a PS2 Resident Evil 4-level graphic achievement. Sumo Digital is to be even further praised.

In terms of specifics, in my short comparison this afternoon, the XBox version has more geometry, cleaner textures, much less aliasing (a given), very little slowdown and infinitely better particle and fogging effects. There are generally more clouds, better water, more reflection and better lighting effects. In other words, it is as good as the first conversion as expected. I don't know why I feared that the XBox version would be a slightly nicer version of the new PS2 engine. To go on, it has a more muted gamma level at the same settings, though the road textures remain crisper. The car also seems to be a little closer to the camera as well. Control is near identical, but the XBox controller has the edge for driving games in general. Modes appear to be totally identical.

The PS2 game is still an excellent port and is a near-arcade experience as well. It is well worth it if you don't have an XBox. I saw on another board somewhere that the sun in the first SP stage of the PS2 version is omnipresent, while it is absent in the XBox version. This is indeed true, but I am unsure which is more like the arcade version (probably PS2). There are significantly fewer cloud layers in stages like Lost City and the gradients between layers of overall mist are plainly visible. At one point it looks like there is a giant translucent polygon floating in the sky as you round a corner. The game also has a brighter, almost washed out look, but that really is picking nits. It is pretty amazing actually.

When all is said and done, OutRun 2006 Coast to Coast is still the best arcade racer around. The experience is just a little less breathtaking on the PS2.

I just got my copy of the XBox version today. It's nice and pretty, but the contrast seems a bit high, causing the aliasing to look worse. If you plan to use the Logitech wheel, you will have to rewire it to swap the gear levers, which is fairly easy to do if you're handy with a soldering iron.

Sadly, it looks like the game's rarity combined with needing a Live subscription will keep the number of online players very small. The multiplayer ranking chart looked like it had maybe 1/4 the number of people that I've seen on the PS2 version's board.

Whats this about needing Live? Thats only to compete online, right?

And, does it include a unlockable version of "Turbo Outrun"? (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE)

Yeah, just for the online stuff. You're not missing out on any downloads or anything without it, but you also don't get to use the online high score boards.

Nope. ;_; I was hoping it would, too, given the theme's heavy connection with Turbo Outrun.

This one really sucks for extras. I thought they'd at least keep the original Outrun as a unlockable and the bonus tracks from Outrun 2, and give us Turbo Outrun (I assume Outrun was running under emulation which would've made Turbo Outrun easy to do). But we actually didn't even get what we already had, so keep your copy of Outrun 2 around if you liked the 1986 original and the bonus tracks.

The only really new things are the special Outrun tuned cars, a couple entirely new cars, the single player missions and races, and night time versions of Palm Beach and Sunny Beach. Whee.

klausien, I enjoyed reading your comparion between the Xbox and PS2 versions. However, I have noticed on the PS2 version right away that the game graphics look slightly squished, as if going from the Xbox to the PS2, everything looks slightly taller than they should be (like circles looking like ovals instead of true circles). This is kind of like KOF 95 on the Saturn having that slightly squished look from the arcade version. Otherwise, I am pleasingly surprised by how the PS2 version has turned out.

My bigges surprise was the similarity or I guess the level of detail, ported to the psp version, the psp version rocks for control and graphics. Great port, the xbox and ps2 are sweet as well... for all those with the xbox version, we should setup a time to have a DP room, I could host if anyone is interested... here is my Aim info gstackp200.

I had that covered before i even got "Outrun 2". The Saturn version of "Outrun" is nice and (IMO) the best home version out there.

I'm really quite sad and severely pissed that this version doesn't contain "Turbo" as its heavily influenced by it and there are no arcade perfect home conversions of "Turbo".

I was really hoping for Turbo Outrun as well, since I haven't played it in probably 15 years. Was hoping to see Outrunners as well. Combined with the original Outrun, we'd of had a complete arcade Outrun collection.

Sadly Sega doesn't seem to really care about it's heritage outside of Outrun (The 1986 arcade original), Afterburner, Space Harrier, Super Hang On, and the Sonic series.

Well SEGA must not care about the XBOX either given how difficult it is to find on the system.

But are we 100% sure there is no unlockable game in this game?

Maybe i need to fire off an e-mail to SEGA and hope i get an answer.

I've definitely not seen any hidden games in any of the 3 console versions. Even the 100% completion code doesn't unlock any. Who knows what changes they might make in the PC release, though.

Finally arrived yesterday, I'm pretty pleased so far.

But I do have some minor complaints. The menus are confusing. Like how do I play the original Outrun 2 arcade game? Found Outrun 2 but theres no endings (I think I found the SP arcade game and there are endings there), only get the option to restart or exit.

And once I got a load screen before the ending started in the SP game?

And how come I can't enter my high score initials, it automatically puts my profile name in? Not that it's likely to ever be any different unless a friend plays it when someones over here, but I still liked the arcade feel of entering in my own initials (I even do it on the Sega Arcade Gallery GBA Outrun even though I know they're gone as soon as I shut the system down ).

And I don't like slip streaming. Keep the drafting to NASCAR games, doesn't need to be in Outrun in my opinion, especially off cars going 100mph slower 2 miles down the road from me!

The only original arcade game that's included is Outrun 2 SP, which also contains the courses from Outrun 2. Once you select your car, hit Y at the mode select menu to switch to the Outrun 2 course. Then you can do the same at the music select menu to get the 7 original songs.

Yeah I found it after I posted.

It is basically the original Outrun 2 game when your in that mode, just with slip streaming. Seems pretty much identical otherwise the 1 time I played that mode today (Been sticking with SP for most of the time obviously).

Well I'm PISSED. I was all set to buy the PC version of this TODAY, the day that it was SUPPOSED to be released, but NO, now amazon.com says that it won't be released until June 13th! Why the hell do they need nearly 6 more weeks?
