    Default In praise of Punchout!!!

I was thinking today - that of all the Nintendo franchises that keep getting new releases - we really need to see a new game in the Punchout franchise. The games sold well, got good reviews, and both appear on peoples favorite games of all time lists. i never hear even any rumors of a release - it is as if the series has dropped off the face of the earth. Nintendo needs to get off it's ass and:

    1) Make something sweet like Punchout!!! Revolution
    2) Release Punchout for the GBA NES classics series.

So while I'm waiting (and waiting...) does anyone have any recommendation for a good boxing game? Also - If you have never played super Punchout - grab a copy for the SNES today, or at least Fight Night Round 2 for the Gamecube which has Super Punchout as an added extra

If anyone has some cool Punchout memories post them here!

Only if they did it right. It'd have to keep the cartoony feel, tight controls, and most importantly, the overbearing stereotypes. The closest thing we've had to a 3D silly boxing game is Ready 2 Rumble boxing, which I wasn't a fan of, even though I'm a Punchout fan.

Try Victorious Boxers for the PS2. The Rocky games were also quite entertaining. I think Maxlords did Victorious Boxers as a Sleeper of the Week, so as soon as the search is fixed you may want to check out his posts about it.

Dude you've got it all wrong. What we really want is the original 2 screen punchout from the arcade ported to the DS. Now that would be sweet.

If there's any game that would totally fit perfect for the DS its the arcade Punch-Out!!

And therein lies the problem. All of those over-the-top stereotypes were done in good fun (they even made fun of themselves with the Japanese fighter). But in today's PC-obsessed world, companies are too busy making sure they don't accidentally offend anyone who's not a white male (except for the TV show Family Guy, which has led to it's repeated cancellation, despite its quality).

Since people apparantly have lost the ability to laugh at themselves, this element of any new Punch-Out game would be entirely absent.

I second that. Also if you really want to go the extra step Victorious Boxers 2, is even better. Best freaking create a fighter mode ever. IMO this game tops the Fight Night games, by a long shot. Only problem is it's import only.

Damn, great idea. The DS would be perfect for a port of both arcade Punch-Out!! games. Maybe make a new Punch-Out for the DS that uses the touch screen for punching, and have the arcade games as unlockable extras or something. That would be sweet...

It's a fucking Greek tragedy that have hipocritcal society. It's wrong to acknowledge people as being different, but you also have to recognize their culture and history.

We're all the same, but respect our differences. Fuck that. I'll gladly sit back, play punchout read the RSDB and make wise-ass sterotypical remarks.

Unless we can get over ourselves we'll never know the joy of punchout again. Same reason we'll never see another show like All in the Family.

It's humour it's not the Klan.

A new Punch-out and a new Kid Icarus are definitely in order.

Thirded. If you can get past the learning curve, you will love the Victorious Boxers series. Hell, the import Hajime no Ippo 2 even has Punch-Out characters in it!

Darn, beat me too it! I was thinking the same thing earlyier!

While not a huge fan of the Punch-Out games, I do enjoy them occasionaly on MAME.
I will get around to editing this thing again.

Play Wade Hixton's Counter Punch for GBA if you want to play a great Punch-Out style game. Has incredible cell-shaded graphics (best I've seen on the GBA in fact) and crazy characters with loads of special moves. Lots of politically incorrect stereotypes too including a pimp that looks and talks exactly like Snoop Dog!

Yeah, it's a blatant Punch-Out rip off but it's at least a good one.

As long as we're priaising Punch-Out!!, might as well take this opportunity to promote the proper spelling of it:

    Punch-Out!!

Kudos and 500 meseta to Kaine, Ruudos and Mr Mort for keepin' it reals.
