2D Games Updated to 3D

Mixed feeling about that. Great series, but the 2d to 3d thing has so rarely been done well. Plus I strongly doubt gamers today would appreciate the game play (walk around, whomp stuff, etc.) that made it great in the first place, so they'd probably try to add missions, a story line with cutscenes, unlimited continues, make it easier, etc., etc., etc...

CW sums up the trepidation a classic gamer can feel when hearing about yet another 2D to 3D update. Like Castlevania 64.

I'm just wondering if there's a list setting forth what series have been brought kicking and screaming from 2D into 3D, as well as which of them have done it gracefully, and of course, which were complete train wrecks.

If you consider Maximo a continuation of Ghosts and Goblins etc., that's about the best I've played (though I still prefer the "arcade-ness" of the 2d games.)

One more, Grand Theft Auto is much more engrossing in 3d than 2d.

I might get slammed for this but, I think Mario was more enjoyable in his 2d form. Mario Bros. all the way to Yoshi's Island seemed to capture the series for what it is. I played Mario64 and Mario Sunshine on department store consoles and they felt so strange to me.

I'm with you 100%. I think the platform genre as a whole lost a lot in the transistion to 3d. Now they're "treasure hunt" style games that just require time (and lots of it) and not much skill.

Well...I must say that the horror that is Blaster Master: Blasting Again is still with me. That was one conversion to 3D that should NOT have been published. Mega Man translated poorly to 3D so far as well for most people (although I still liked it). Contra Legacy of War sure made me nauseous too.

I'm also surprised no one mentioned Metal Gear, which translated exceptionally well to 3D.

Hell yea mario was way better 2D than 3D. I played mario 64 for about 10 minutes got bored as hell and never played it again.


2D games > good pizza > fat chicks > 3D games (most of them)

Sports games! Thats one genre on the whole where the move to 3D has been nothing but a godsend. Who can go back to Bulls vs Blazers when NBA 2K3 is amongst us? Anyone...? ANYONE....?

*disclaimer: the one exceptionis baseball games. Todays games are supperaccurate sims which count how many tobacco spits and crotch grabs there are per inning and lack fun factor. Give me NES Baseball Stars ANYDAY.

I enjoyed the recent remake of Spy Hunter as well.

I don't think of it as bringing 2D games into 3D though - and I don't think anybody should really. It's all marketing - "New and improved!" junk.

The fact of the matter is that nobody releases 2D games (with a few exceptions) for todays consoles (GBA notwithstanding). And since companies want to leverage the popularity with their older work they use those characters/places and build a modern game around it.

If you're not a fan of modern gaming then of course you're not going to like these 'remakes'. I'm not flaming anybody, just voicing my own 2D vs 3D pov. (for the record I like pretty much all genres and generations on their own merits).

NES legends of the diamond is the best baseball video game ever.

No 3-D rehash of a 2-D game has impressed me yet. Maybe 1 exception... Metroid Prime, of course.

Rygar was bad-assed on the NES. Sucked on the PS2. Defender was okay, but still not as good as the original. Shinobi on the PS2... what a joke.
What scares me even more... Ninja Gaiden is coming soon for the Xbox. I've heard good things about it thus far, but I'm still wary about buying it.

I'll always prefer the 2D versions of a game to the 3D versions. Zelda and Final Fantasy are the only games that I like in 3D just as much as 2D.
