Favorite Horror Game Series

I was just wondering what everyone's favorite survival horror game series was. I really like the Silent hill series myself, and the Fatal Frame series. If I forgot any let me know and I'll add them.

Fatal Frame, with Clock Tower being a close 2nd. Those games scare the shit out of me if I play at night with the lights out.

I always liked Resident Evil but it never really scared me. It's just a big zombie killing fest that is more funny than it is scary.

Silent Hill was creepy. Reeeealy creepy. Resident Evil may have been better games, but they never made me almost crap myself like Silent Hill did.

Heh, I wouldn't say that Resident Evil was funny though there are some moments I'll laugh at with the dialogue. I've never played a Silent Hill game, unfortunately; that's on my list of games to get (every one in the series).

I will say that Brainbread is a bit of fun as a time waster, and yes, it's definitely in the "funny" camp.

Silent Hill i would list first as playing in the dark had more chills in it. I remember in the first one in the hospital, walking across a room just as you were about to reach the door the phone rang giving a jump and then the chill when you heard your little girls voice on the phone crying for daddy.( being a new parent at the time of playing helped with the chills in this game)

Fatal frame had that, did i just see something, creepiness as you weren't sure if you saw something out of the corner of your eye as the ghosts would just float by and disappear.

Resident Evil as stated above was a zombie killing fest that for me was along the lines of watching Romero's night,dawn,day, and land of the dead movies where you would see the good ole boys shooting zombies for fun and sport. Although it did have some jump moments like in Res 1 where the dogs burst through the windows or the first time or when you encountered a hunter for the first time and he would lop your head off. Just no chills.

Clock tower also had the jumps scares as the protaginist would jump out of painting excetra to scare you.

But i will say ive played and enjoyed them all being a huge horror fan and the only way to play these games is with the lights out in a quiet room and good sound as the sound is getting better and better as these games get released. Some ive even played with head phones on and once in a while you have to take them off to make sure there wasnt a sound in the room with you.

D is my favorite series with D2 for dreamcast being one of the most underappreciated games ever. if you have not tried this game pick it up. it combines resident evil, doom, and myst all into one game and has an awesome story. i will also give an honorable mention to a game that wasnt in the poll, eternal darkness for gamecube!

I'll have to say silent hill as well.
Fatal Frame 1 was AWESOME, until I started to get stuck, one of the few games I played and didn't finish, COULDN'T finish...
Haven't played FF2 yet, but I'll probly be doing it on easy level.

Silent Hill, I've played them all and liked them all.

Resident Evil and Clock tower could easily both compete for first, but I didn't play either series pre-ps2/gc gen so I missed out on a lot.

Clock Tower 3's first chapter is probably THE SINGLE GREATEST portion of a survival horror that has EVER graced a TV screen on ANY system, EVER. The rest of the game was good, but each successive chapter got less and less scary/lower quality.

D is an amazing horror game that plays like Myst. Sure it's short and has the worst twist in gaming history (come on the end was way, way to cheesy) but damn if it ain't fun.

D2 is also an amazing game with an unbeleivable amount of content and information (the archives are incredibly detailed) it was a great experience. Plus it was one of the first genre busting games. It was a 3rd person surviival horror, FPS and a rail based first person game as well. Not to mention the delightfully bizarre story.

Silent Hill without a doubt. I can't think of another series where I've felt so tense. I'll never forget the feeling of walking into an unexplored hospital hallway ready to quickly look right and left and bash any oncoming nurse to death ;D. All games have had some excellent parts just to mess with you, especially in the first one. One of my favorites in the original is towards the end where the harmless squeak penguins all of the sudden RANDOMLY attacks you. I also remember the hospital part very well, because at the end, you can simply leave or explore two more rooms a little further down and in each one something WEIRD would happen.

Silent Hill absolutely. IMO, by far the best scripted and best made horror series ever. RE in comparison is cheese city, whereas SH games really take things seriously.

I found both Clock Tower 3 and Eternal Darkness to be very good as well...

Silent Hill 1, it was my first game I ever bought online. Wow what a classic.

Clock Tower 1, however, scared me the most, and introduced me to horror. It was a very nightmare inducing experience. I mean, the shower scene. Eep.

Fatal Frame gets my vote due to it's atmospheric sense of dread...play the Xbox version at night with the lights off and the audio tripped up.

Fatal Frame is the game series I find most scary. While Silent hill almost ties it, both Fatal Frame 1 and 2 were enough that I simply could not play the games alone in the dark. Silent hill 1 was more scary though. With its creepy yet oddly familer setting, it had something few horror themed games (and even most modern horror movies) have which was atmosphere. The right sound effects, the right lighting effets, and just enough various things to play with the mind. The later installments of Silent hill while decent were no match to the greatness of the first. They either tried to do the same stuff over, or would simply try another easy aproach. While its somewhat true about Fatal Frame as well (camra as weapon again?), it still never left me feeling unhappy with the game. Besides, if were going to belittle a game over using a camera as a weapon in multiple games, wouldnt that apply to each survival horror game series?

Now see, Im torn here. Horror is my favorite gaming genre & I've played at least one game in each series listed in the poll above.

Silent Hill was a fantastic experience- I rented it first, played through it by candlelight using a guide, but that didnt ruin anything for me- I bought it as soon as I found it used. Since then I got SH2 the day it came out or soon after, & right now Im working on the secret "UFO" ending in SH3. It's gonna be a b*tch getting through the subway & home using only the Sexy Beam! Havent played SH4 yet.

My first experience w/ Resident Evil was w/ the Directors Cut DualShock version, I'd bought it (w/ Diablo) as my first PS1 games (I got on the bandwagon late.) I was walking along, wondering what all the fuss over this game (& how scary could it be?) was about, when the f'ing dog smashed through the window. I guess that did it for me. I was hooked on survival horror from then on. DIdnt care for RE2 or Code: Veronica X but RE3 was OK. Working on RE: Dead Aim w/ a Guncon2 right now.

Fatal Frame & Clock Tower are close runners up- Ive only played the 1st FF & I'll say it's best done using a surround sound system & leave it at that! The first Clock Tower is obviously dated but still a good game. IMO they did a good thing w/ CT3, though gameplay is a bit repetitive & simplistic. The cinema of the little girl being bashed w/ a sledgehammer still shocks me.

I enjoyed the first "D", but once I figured out what to do I got playtime down to less than 2 hrs- ZERO replay value. I sold it for 5x what I paid. I started D2 on Dreamcast but, as so many of my other games, cant find time to get back into it- & from recent posts here, I know I have to!

I rented Alone in the Dark for PS & got to the 2nd disc, but IIRC a glitch prevented me from progressing farther, at he circle of stones/steles. I got it used last year, & have since finished the Carnby storyline & began Aline's, but again- it's something I'll have to find time to get back into.

I started Siren awhile back, but got tired having to do the little vignettes repeatedly. Trial-&-error gameplay kinda bugs me. Maybe I'll get back into it someday.

Some others not mentioned that fit the genre & I highly recommend: Echo Night & Juggernaut (PS), Neither are really jump-out-at-you scary, but just give you that kinda creepy feeling. Juggernaut is a 3-disc game & has more of that "D"/Myst feel to it. EN's graphics are kinda weak & old-timey, but that fits the game's storyline. I picked up EN: Beyond for PS2 but again...havent had time to play!

well it is and it isnt, it does star the same character (laura) but the game has nothing to do with her d story, its more of a side adventure if anything. great game by the way, as it incorporates sound only to let you know the enemy is nearby!

I had to put my vote in for Resident Evil simply because there are so many games in the series that I've enjoyed. That being said, I loved Clock Tower 3 (haven't played either of the first two yet), and as shocking as the sledgehammer scene was I didn't think it had anything on the acid bath from chapter two. I seriously remember shutting the system down later and thinking sweet holy shit, I can't believe I just saw that.

Leave it to a video game to have two moment of gore that leave every splatter flick I've seen in the past decade seem limp by comparison.

By the looks of it I'm going to have to go and try D. I've heard that it was really good but never have had a chance to play either of them. I really like clock tower also. I've played some of the resident evil games but couldn't get used to the camera angle and the way the character moved. Silent Hill is just so creepy. Fatal frame was also really good. Fatal Frame and Silent Hill are the only series that I can play through without totally crappin my pant's, even though Silent Hill I still have a little trouble with.
