    Default Funny encounter today.

About once a year I actually visit video rental stores and rent movies. Well, maybe 6 months ago I stopped into an independent rental store to rent one of the LoTR flicks. The place was very charming. They had a small assortment of older, used, games for sale, card catalogs to search for videos not on the shelves, a group of folks playing chess on a couple of tables, and very nice workers behind the counter.

All in all, it was a great place. Of course, I almost never rent movies so I haven't been back since returning that movie.

A few weeks ago I drove past and saw a going out of business sign. I'd been meaning to stop in and check out the games, but did not get around to it. About 2pm this afternoon, driving past today I saw a sign in the door that said today was the last day, and they were closing at 6PM.

Now, Jess and I had just dropped Nate off at my mother-in-law's for a sleepover, and were on our way to a late lunch to begin our semi-annual date. I asked if we could stop in briefly, and she said that was fine, as she'd been searching for an out of print Disney video for a while.

We walked in, and she asked about the video (Peter Pan). They had it and she was thrilled.

While she was paying for it, I looked for the games. I found a stack of NES boxes on the ground. I turned around a little bit and started to ask the owner and workers if they had the games behind the counter, when "some guy" over my shoulder said the games were his, he'd already bought them.

He then said 'Steve, is that you?' . It was our very own Portnoyd !!!

Now, in the first place, he had somehow managed to scoop me, buying every game in the place before I arrived.

Secondly, I gotta know, how in the world did you know about this shop, and that they were closing up?

Congrats on the deal, and it was fun running into you like that.

    Have a great Christmas weekend,
    Steve

Yeah, I must have gotten asked about 10 times during that day about the games, and I'm glad I got in when I did! I had missed 20 N64 games by an hour out of those that I got. :\

Yeah, running into Steve was pretty awesome. A rental store closing? Should draw DP members by the handfuls (I wouldn't be surprised if the guy who grabbed those N64 titles was someone like videogamedaryll, hehe).

I found this store about 6 months ago while housesitting at my sister's, who lives 5 minutes away. I snagged 8 money N64 and PSX titles and kept my eye on the place. Then I found it was closing and was waiting for the day I could sneak in and bulk lot it.

So I went earlier in the week with Achika and he wouldn't go below $2.50/title Screw that. So he told me he was closing on Friday, so I resolved to come back and last second bargain.

So I got all of it for $300. 80 PSX titles, 30 N64 titles, 60 NES titles, 40 Genesis titles, 8 GB titles, 2 Sega CD titles, 4 Saturn titles. Most at least boxed. A little over $1.25 each? Fine by me.

Say, late tonight I remembered a movie I wish I'd remebered to ask the guy for. I don't suppose you got any contact info for him, huh?

For that matter, if any of you have a copy, the movie I'm looking for is 'Hopscotch'. I suppose I cold just buy it retail, but I've already typed this all in, so what the hell....

Those kinds of sales are always a little sad as it's another mom and pop place closing down, but if I can get a good deal out of the closing, so be it.

A few years ago a local video rental place closed down and while they didn't have any games, I did end up buying what was left of their horror video section and their martial arts section for a buck a movie. All the Faces of Death, plus classics like Nail Gun Massacre, Microwave Massacre, and several Troma classics.

lol. There were only a few places that carried Faces of Death. I used to go to Kaleidoscope all the time. They always had the movies Blockbuster wouldnt carry. They even had Laser Discs. They had some good stuff...thats where I rented the Reanimator for the first time. (I have the DVD now though)

Back on topic...I used to have good finds in japan all the time...Ive never had the $$ to take advantage of anything in the states though. I need to set back about $500 for those emergency buys.

Indeed it's a shame, but when my local videostore went out of business I was lucky enough to pick up a couple of sealed NES games. Two particular ones worth noting were sealed copies of Metal Gear and Castlevania for the nes. Not too shabby I'd say.

If you know where the Kaleidascope is (was) over off of SW59th and Agnew, when I first moved out I moved into those apartments right behind there (Country Club Apartments). If you're not familiar with them, it was the type of place where you didn't lock your car doors because if you did people would smash the window to get into your car, but if you left it unlocked at least you didn't have to replace the window once a week hah.

Anyway I used to walk around the corner to Kaleidascope all the time. I was not suprised to see them going out of business a couple of years ago, but like I said I did get some good deals that week.

Final game count: 303 games for $300. About $1/game. Yay! Tradelist of dupes coming eventually...
