Ever since my ancient D&D days, I've known them as 'Hit Points'.

While technically both make sense, I've always heard and read "hit points."

    Complete agreement here.

I don't ever recall a game ever saying 'health points' at any time. Usually only said 'Health'. I have, on the other hand, seen games that say 'Hit Points'.

Hit points. 100% sure about that. although in Mario RPG I'm pretty sure they're "heart points."

Yeah, HP does indeed originate in the paper and dice D&D games of old. It most definitely stands/stood for Hit Points, without doubt. While Health Point is technically accurate now and then, it is not the ORIGIN of HP.

So to answer you question, while Health Points is symantically accurate, it is not phonetically nor historically accurate.

It's always traditionally been hit points. Usually in Japanese game manuals and in other text they'll write out "hit points" next to "HP" just to make it clear.

well, we know what the origin is, but honestly, it can really mean anything and honestly...it probably doesnt matter what it means

whatever it stands for in what your doing is what it means
