    The last Game Gear I saw (and probably the only ... yeah, the only) around 1998 or so was a glass screen, so I think.

    Seconding what Ianoid said - why's it special?

    Why is it special? Once again:

    Flat glass is clearer and harder to scratch than the pastic rounded type. That's it.

    I have one of each and I can only speculate that they changed the screen cover from glass to plastic since the plastic screen is less likely to break if it's dropped. I suppose it's fair to say that the Game Gear systems with the glass screen covers are more desirable being that they don't scratch as easily.
