    Default Tomorrow's Collectibles... Today

So what CURRENT system games do you think will be collectible in the future? If this thread gets good replies I'll move it to the classic discussion forum so we can all laugh at our speculation sometime down the road.

A few off the top of my head. As always, this is pure speculation

    - Sneakers for Xbox. It's a Toys 'R Us exclusive and it's not very well-praised. Usually that means not many get sold (though look at what happened with Hasbro's "Frogger"). Selling at a slightly lower price of $29.99 now.

    - Mad Maestro for PS2. That weird game in that even weirder yellow box. The unusual genre would have appealed only to the hardcore (most of us here, probably), and the buzz when it was released was that it was limited in distribution anyway. Pretty good chance this will be sought after some day.

    - Mister Mosquito for PS2. See Mad Maestro! Same publisher, same rules.

    - Air Force Delta for Xbox. I still don't really understand if this is rare or not, but it goes for insane amounts on eVilBay at times. It was an early Xbox release, perhaps in limited distribution because of its somewhat limited appeal, but hell. It LOOKS gorgeous, and the series has been around for awhile... I don't get this one.

    - ZooCube for GameCube. I don't have any "real number", but I've heard this one was hard to find in stores right from the get-go.

    More? Let's hear your thoughts.

Shadow Hearts for the PS2 may be a future rarity. I've yet to play it, but the RPG seems to be massing a decently-sized cult following. It's also not particularly common, in my experience, and the few copies I've seen haven't been below $40 in price.

And I wouldn't be surprised if Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis for the GBA winds up as a big eBay seller in a few years. It's currently not hard to find the game in stores, but Atlus titles have a tendency to become scarce before anyone realizes it.

Shadow Hearts had a pretty hearty print run I think. The thing is, VERY few games have low print runs anymore. I think it's gonna be more of a supply vs. demand thing for this generation of games. There will be more gamers that want the OOP games than there are games to go around. We're already seeing this with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night which had a MASSIVE print run and still the price isn't lowering.

As for what I think will be collectible? Certainly the obscure niche titles like Mister Mosquito and Mad Maestro, as well as others (Mars Matrix, Gundam Side Story 0079). RPGs as always carry more demand after they're OOp than when they're out, so I'd bet Suikoden 3 and Wild Arms 3 go up later on as well. And certainly the import Rez limited edition that comes with it's own USB vibrator! Everyone needs one!

Here's one that I'd bet has flown in under the radar: Pac-Man Fever. You know, Mario Party meets Namco?

Critics panned it. Stores didn't order many. But it's PAC-MAN, dammit! It's been $30 since it launched, so if you're remotely interested, you'll probably wanna pick it up now. And if it DOES wind up being an ebay prize a couple years down the road, just remember where you heard it first and kindly donate 10% of the proceeds to DP Industries, Inc.

    Default tomorrow's collectibles

This is a really tough one to call. I find it hard to predict what people are going to want. The old rules don't seem to apply anymore. Here are a couple old rules that IMO, are dying out:

-Only low production games are valuable collectibles. For the reason stated by Maxlords. Just look at SOTN and NES Final Fantasy. And I have to question just how rare Tengen Tetris and Panzer Dragoon Saga are when they regularly appear in collections.

-The game doesn't matter. This rule mostly applied to 2600 games; a game only had to be RARE to be collectible, and that was it. It did not matter if the game was a piece of shit. Now, it seems like collectors are moving toward quality games more. If you look at the most wanted (judging by ebay) games for say, the SNES, or the Sega Saturn, you'll see what I mean.

Having said that, I might be able to make a couple predictions about future collectibles based on more recent patterns.

-Gradius 3+4 for PS2. This to me is the equivalent of The Raiden Project for PSX; beloved series shooter, early in the systems life cycle, probably not a whole lot of them, definitely not pushing the system's hardware, a niche item that not everyone will apprecaite enough to take care of.

-Steel Battalion for X-box - Trust me, no one will EVER try to come out w/ a controller like this again! Sort of equivalent to the Twin Sticks for SS Virtual On, but 10X as much so.

-Skies of Arcadia for DC - Rumored to be coming to ??? PS2? GC? Who knows. When it does show up, people will no doubt say it's not the same. Equivalent - SNES Chrono Trigger (or at least SS Magic Night Rayearth)

Suikoden III might wind up in the collector's circle, but I suspect that, like other first-party Sony titles, there'll be plenty of Wild Arms 3 to go around.

Skies of Arcadia is still fairly easy to find on the DC, and the GameCube version looks to be better than the original (God, I hope they cut out the overworld battles.) It's well-liked in RPG circles, though, so there may be some demand for the original in the future.

This seems like a good time to bring up two other potentially rare RPGs . . .

Tsugunai: Atonement (PS2) -A fairly obscure RPG with a unique sense of structure, this one was also brought out by Atlus, and it doesn't seem very common.

Ephemeral Fantasia (PS2)-It's pure player-insulting crapola, but it seems like this unorthodox RPG had a much lower print run when compared to other Konami releases. It might just be to the PS2 what Tecmo's Secret of the Stars is to the SNES: awful, but collectible.

    One word Disney...

    Kingdom Hearts (PS2??)- ok, it's an RPG...but it's got DISNEY characters...instant future collectible two-fer...

Disney Golf (PS2)- DISNEY characters again, been to 6 stores, I have seen 1 copy...

The Jungle Book game compatible with Dance Mats...(PS1)

How can you forget about Rez for PS2? That has to have some collectibility? And maybe even include Stretch Panic.

I doubt that Ephemeral Phantasia will be collectible unless it's to completists. That had to have been one of the worst games EVER made. I'll never understand collecting bad games. NEVER.

Rez might be collectible..had a good sized print run but it's of the type, and MAYBE Stretch Panic...but...( I have to) it's a stretch!

Disney games, I doubt, as they have HUGE print runs, and very few of the older ones are collectible..I don't see that trend suddenly starting.

Tsugunai: Atonement I could see tho...that's a good call, as is Gradius 3 and 4.

I'm pretty sure that these PAL games are going to be sought after if they don't get released in the US.

Doshin the Giant for the Gamecube - I walked into a store and saw this, no magazine or internet site picked up on its release until two months later, and I can't find a copy anywhere anymore.

Shenmue II for the Dreamcast - Same story. THis came out at the end of the DCs life, and fetches £40+ on eBay for a tatty, battered, crappy looking edition. It may go down in value if the Xbox version comes out though.

Why do I have the feeling "BMX XXX" might get in here? Not many shops stocking it and it's an 18 and over title...

I thought they were releasing a censored and un-censored version. I think the un-censored one might get in there.

    Default predictions...

thanks to their lower than usual production numbers, pretty much anything from atlus usually ends up rare, so expect:
    wizardry: the forsaken land
tsunagai: atonement (i didn't like it much, but it was different, lol)
    sky gunner
robopon 2 (cross & ring versions)
    hoshigami: ruining blue earth
    tactics ogre
to see these end up like the persona games and rhapsody- tough to track down!

squaresoft owns the ob series now, so i'd guess that they don't want atlus producing any more tactics ogre after a certain point...

kondom hearts is NOT rare, and probably won't be- there are so many copies out there (remember, no ff 11, so this is the "substitute" for the time being until ff raider comes out next march or whenever)

i think dropship, gadget racers, stretch panic, gradius 3 & 4, silpheed: the lost planet, rez, klonoa 2, herdy gerdy, ring of red, and of course, mr. mosquito & mad maestro will be the rarer ps2 games to track down...

(xbox) steel battalion- definitely, lol- sneakers- yup (it's really really bad- i'll probably pick one up just for the hell of it, even after i suffered through nezmix, the import version)- but then again, kabuki warriors and new legends were worse...i don't know the print run of sneakers, but i'm gonna guess that toys r' us is sitting on a few thousand unsold copies for a few months...

oh yeah, you pervs- rez with the transvibrator came out in japan a while ago- i played it, and it's basically a subwoofer in your pocket! not very stimulating (i felt like i was running a marathon, and my heart was pounding, with all the bass thumping away)...of course, i kept that thing ABOVE the waist, lol...

The interesting aspect of rarity for the current generation is that everything sells so many more copies these days than in the past.

Other than those already listed I've wondered about Ico for PS2. A great game (IMO) that sold poorly (according to the press). And it's unique enough that I think it'll be sought after in the future.

I'd mostly look at RPGs or platformers for the gems. They're popular enough genres that the demand will be there, which is have the battle I think.

    Default simplify!

looking over a few lists elsewhere, i see that it's mostly shooters, RPGs, puzzle games, and platformers that seem to end up "rare"-

pretty much any game that doesn't get advertised on tee vee is fair game for collectability. there are gonna be a skrillion metroid prime for sale, but if i see a mr. mosquito, klonoa beach volleyball, or sub rebellion for sale at the same time, i'd grab up either one (or all three)over that game, knowing i can always get it later...

Klonoa Beach Volleyball wasn't released in the US, making it all the less likely that it would be advertised on TV here. Argh! Why don't we get cool games like that?!

Right now I would say the Klonoa games, the first ones goes for over $50 at the least, and sky gunner. All of them are good.odd games. And like Joe said in Tips and Tricks a long tiem ago, most of the non-sports late system releases.

Joe you should make an updated list of "rare"modern games and put it in T&T!
