Like it was storyline or something, you got no exp from battles. I think it was a 8 or 16 bit game. but that's all I can really remember.
Then again, I might just be crazy and made it up, thinking that I remember it

I go online sometimes, but ... everyone's spelling is really bad, and it's ... depressing.

Ys 1&2 (TGCD)?
Egbert, I miss you...
All of the Dougherty bros. games (that I know of) were like that. You would get to a certain point in the game and level up, killing monsters would give you gold/food but no XP, in fact you had no XP at all. I am talking about games like Questron I/II, Legacy of the Ancients, the Legend of Blacksilver. Also, in these games you would increase certain attributes by playing mini-games, levelling up would not increase all of your attributes. It probably sounds like a dumb system but these were good games.
Cinnamon!
Chrono Cross (yeah it's PSX but whatever) gave you "stars" from boss battles, but you never really gained any experience during random battles. Although I think you gained magic and techniqiues or something instead...
And of course most if not all Action RPGs obviously don't use normal experience systems (Ys falls under this catagory).
Legacy of the Ancients was one of the coolest games ever! I'd love to see that remade, or a similar concept at least.

Holy crap. It's been a while.
Dungeon Explorer 2 and probably part 1 but I haven't played it for the PC Engine/Turbografx 16.
I don't think you really leveled up in Beyond Oasis or Legend of Oasis but I doubt your thinking of those 2. I know you earned hearts but I don't remember how the heart thing worked.
Yeah, me too. These games had a real home-spun feel to them. They were definitely inspired by Ultima but have a completely different tone. Now that I think about it I doubt there were any console versions of these games. They could have been done pretty well though, they all had a simple joystick and firebutton control scheme that worked fine.Originally Posted by ddockery
You can get the PC version of LOTA at the link below, it looks like crap compared to the C-64 version though.
