Will there be a video game crash in 1984?

I've been hearing a lot about the possiblilty of a video game crash . Back in December 1982, Atari reported only a 10% to 15% increase in expected earnings, and not the 50% figure expected.

And they made a bad move when they rushed E.T. to the stores in time for the holiday season and made more carts than they had made VCS consoles.

I've also heard a lot about slumping sales in the video game category alone.

I think it's going to happen. I don't want it to happen, though.

Cmosfm posted about a new Nintendo system coming in a few years, and with all I've heard about computers like Colecovision, there is hope.

But still, it doesn't look good.

What do you guys think?

i don't think so, i think the video game industry is stronger more than ever right now...it's a big icon...one of those things you can't imagine living without...especially in this day of age, so nah there won't be a video game crash

No Way that is not true there will be no crash in 84, but there wil defeintely be a down turn leading to a crash in 86 possibly early 87

Yes, I think this can happen. Here's why:

-I saw Home Run in Montgomery Ward for $10; who ever heard of a $10 Atari tape?

-My dad says poor people don't like the Intellivision.

-As you already know Atari is going to sue the PANTS OFF of Odyssey!

If Atari runs out of money they will have to make these game in JAPAN

No way that there's going to be a video game crash next year. I just saw these awesome looking games by a company called Mythicon. Judging by the art on the boxes, I really think these games are going to be the saviors of the video game industry.

Hey, I'm going down to SEARS tomorow to pick up an Atari 5200. I can't wait to try the 360 degree analog controlers with number pad built in! I bet their sweet. This system will bury all others. ATARI forever!

I'm too busy playing TRON & TRON: Deadly Discs in the arcade to give a damn about it.

I can barely reach the controls so I gotta' keep using chairs.

There will never be a video game crash for one simple reason: video games are so much better than home console games.

Look at Pac-Man in the arcade vs. Pac-Man on the Atari! Look at Donkey Kong in the arcade vs. Donkey Kong on the Atari! And as someone else mentioned, look at Dragon's Lair -- that will never, EVER happen on a home console.

Pac-Man for the Atari costs $40. That's 160 plays in the arcade. Not everyone wants to pay that much for a game that they might not play 160 times. People are going to get sick of Pac-Man; it'll be dead in a year, mark my words. After that, people will be over the whole "playing second rate games at home" fad and they'll be right back in the arcades.

I think that's why my folks got me the Odyssey 2.
