Default How playable is Densha de Go?

Because I am fascinated by bizarre game concepts, especially in conjunction with bizarre peripherals, I'm thinking about picking up the Densha de Go + controller for the Saturn. I'm really looking forward to getting strange looks when I show this thing to people. However, I don't understand a lick of Japanese.

To those who have played it: Would I spend most of my time mashing buttons and wondering just what in the hell is happening, or is it something that I could probably work through?

Well... there is no button mashing so to speak. You must obey speed limits, keep the schedule and make sure you stop in the right spot at the station. I have played several versions of this game and it's kind of hard to figure out where you're going and when to stop. Not a easy as Tokyo Bus Guide, but along the same lines.

I liked the concept too. Bought the game with the special controller and everything.

    IT IS BORING.

That's all I have to say. Heed these words or play at your own risk!

It's a very niche' game. I can see it making money in the arcades here, as it's got camp value... not owning value. The concept comes from train freaks, which do exist in Japan, for some weird reason or another.

I sold the game awhile back but I do have the train controller in the box, even. Make me an offer!

the funny thing is that this COULD have been some sort of minor hit here if a game company reprogrammed it, licensed the lionel name and stuck it on the box. that would get what, almost a million collectors out of their smoke filled basements (cue addams family tv show scene of two model trains crashing)...
