Default PS2 System Settings for widescreen TV

OK, PS2 - System Settings, Options are either 4:3, Full screen, or 16:9.
I HAVE a widescreen TV, so should't I be able to use the 16:9 setting? When I choose it, it puts the black bars on top and below, forcing it into wide-widescreen (new word).

Should I just leave it at full screen?

If I'm not mistaken, it does that in order to 'fake' 16:9. Once that is set, you are supposed to set your TV to the 'full screen' mode that cuts off the top and bottom of the screen. The black bars wind up being the part that gets obscured, and you've got 'widescreen'.

So, in other words, it's as I assumed - Crap.
