Why do the colors on my Game Gear bleed badly?

Are the compacitors failing? or is this just normal aging?
the sound still works perfectly on it.

It's the capacitors. It's always the capacitors with this system, every one I've seen has problems.

Yep... caps, though I just learned that they made Mega Man for Game Gear. Cool, I'll have to pick that up!

I'd think the caps are not helping, but the GameGear has always had a poor quality cheapo LCD that did what you're seeing there if you held it at enough of an angle anyway, both the fade and the streaking. The other it's notable for is the blue hue to the whole dumb screen too. It and the Turbo Express(and for that fact the TG16 and Duo) all use the same dime store piss poor rotten caps as they've all failed in the same general way and places on their respective boards. Unless you can do the work yourself, if someone wanted any of those devices today I'd buy it used from someone who re-capped them with quality parts.

Game gear is also notorious for a easy to fail speaker assembly too.

I've heard the Majesco Game Gear has a better screen then the original. Does the Masjesco one also have the capacitor problems?

The Majesco version tends to perform better since they had time to improve it, I've never seen one with capacitor issues but they will probably happen eventually.

PS: The capacitors affect the brightness level, but those vertical lines in the screen are simply the LCD crapping out. I had my caps changed by the.golden.axe on AtariAge, he does it well and inexpensively. However, afterwards I realized the screen still wasn't perfect due to the lines. It's very difficult to find a GG screen that isn't worn out.

I've seen screens with vertical lines fixed by having the capacitors replaced, I wish I could find the forum and thread with before and after pics to show it. It's possible to fix vertical lines with new capacitors, but it won't fix every screen with this problem.

Its probably the capacitors. Here is a pretty good video on how to replace them. He also has a pdf in the video description that includes the parts that you need. Will only cost a couple bucks, but will take some time to do it. Hope it helps!
