Although I love SF II Turbo, I'd have to go with World Heroes 2, as the WH series have always been a personal favorite of mine. 2 was the last WH game with Death matches, and it's also the last one to have the "original" feel, as Jet and Perfect changed quite drastically IMHO.
So yeah, if I could only play 1 fighter from this day forth, it'd be World Heroes 2
I read everyone's replies, and there was only one vote for SSBM! That's kinda interesting, given how huge the game is. We're talking one game for the rest of your life after all.
Here's what I'm considering: SSBM, SF2, and The Last Blade. If Super Punch-Out!! counts as a fighting game, though... Well you can roll up your little question and shove it where the rain doesn't fall, 'cause that game wins hands down.
Street Fighter EX+alpha!
close second: The Last Blade

Ultimate MK 3 for the genny.
Soul Calibur for Dreamcast, or Virtua Fighter in an arcade box.

My dream is to someday own the arcade cab of that game. It will happen!

Street Fighter 2 for SNES.
The game maximized the use of the SNES controller. And it was a good arcade port as well.
The memories...
Tekken 3 or Soul Caliber either or. 2d fighters (mortal kombat, street fighter, marvel vs capcom, etc) is one of my least favorite genres.
Mortal Kombat collection off xbox live
Marvel Vs Capcom 2. Hands down.

Easy, Street Fighter 3rd Strike. On an Arcade Cabinet.
It is hard hard for me to separate Tekken 3 and Street Fighter 2,but i think SF2 had the biggest impact on me overall so....
Either this or Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection on PS3. I suppose I'd have to make my decision based on which one I could get a friend to play with me. One of my best friends is a Tekken man and the other is a Street Fighter man. Neither live anywhere near me now, but if one of them moved back I'd choose accordingly.
I came in here expecting to see a lot more votes for Third Strike than I did, really surprised by how popular MvC2 seems to be.
Anyway 3S is the answer. Don't think I've played another fighter where the skill ceiling goes so high or allows for a greater disparity between two players. Also it's probably the best-looking 2D game I can think of. I can understand why people don't take to it, especially now when you're going to struggle to find someone still playing who doesn't slaughter you, but it's the pinnacle of what a 2D fighter can be to me.
