Lightbulb Nintendo's Big-Screen 3DS XL Meets Lukewarm Reception [Slashdot]

MojoKid writes "Nintendo took the wraps off its new, super-sized 3DS XL handheld on Friday, but reactions have been anything but enthusiastic. The new DS offers a larger set of screens (4.88 inches top / 4.18" bottom), better battery life, and will ship with a copy of New Super Marios 2 but it's launching into a very different market than what the original DS XL faced in 2009. The 3DS XL's battery improvements aren't just icing on the cake — they're seen as remedying a critical problem with the current handheld. It also won't support the second circle pad added by the Circle Pad Pro, which implies Nintendo is ready to kill that peripheral altogether. The other major problem is that a larger screen isn't really what the 3DS needed in order to be more successful."

We know. We've been talking about it for days. This is why we should kill the Servebot.

But it's not a party until ServBot shows up!

I wouldn't go openly mocking the ServBot like that lest you want to be in the next batch of Soylent Green.

The way that's worded implies that NSMB2 is included with the system. Is there any confirmation of that? A $200 system that includes a $40 game? So the hardware is ten dollars cheaper than the regular 3DS? Really? Nintendo can't be that stupid can they? Don't answer that last question.

If there's such an emphasis on increased battery life, why are they not making a smaller system with even better battery life?

Seconded. If we do it now we can prevent the next Skynet disaster.

The bigger the gadget, the bigger the battery. Common sense.

Not really considering its only and increase of 30 minutes for 3ds games and a hour or two for DS games, and these are company reported times not real world use battery times. This is a turn off even more then the lack of a second circle pad here...on yeah and this topic is stupid, kill the serve bot, yada yada yada.

So longer battery life is a turn-off? Interesting.

Anyway, you proved my point- the bigger the gadget, the more room inside for a bigger battery. Hence the 3DS XL's longer battery life. It's sad that I had to explain that.

They should have gone the opposite direction, making the 3DS Micro. They could have marketed it towards prisoners who would need a way to conceal it to avoid confiscation.

    Question

Didn't the original 3DS release to lukewarm reception as well?

More that its not significantly longer lasting but an pretty meaningless increase. I personally could never get my 3DS much above 3.5 hours without turning almost everything adjustable off so this upgrade seems more like a bullet point then anything to write home about.

And yeah I worded my post weird but I got what your saying, just half awake bitching to bitch I suppose.

She was hoping you would bring home a bigger model.
