Default Super Mario Bros. Sega Genesis + Mega Drive

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUPER-MARIO-...item3a755db686

I wasn't sure where to post this so I just decided on classic gaming. Its a Brazilian Super Mario game for the genesis, for sale on ebay. Its obviously a bootleg but i just found it to be an interesting item you guys might find cool to see. Its already going for over $20 with 18 bids. Noticed the screen shots on the back seem to be of mario all-stars. The bottom two screen shots are kind of confusing to me as I can't zoom into it enough to see where they are taken from. I think it would be cool to see how mario runs on genesis hardware. What do you guys think of this

Well, it's not really a Mario game, at least not one that ever existed on the SNES. It's a weird-ass homebrew-like bootleg. See for yourself.

wow that looks terrible. You can't even hop on goombas to kill them, and it looks like you can just go right through blocks. No power ups or anything either. I dont know why anybody would want to bid on this garbage. I'm sure they won't be happy with thier purchase.

This game is a hack of Squirrel King, which was a rip off of Rescue Rangers.

    http://bootleggames.wikia.com/wiki/Squirrel_King
"This game was later hacked to make Super Mario World, also known as Super Mario Bros. (the game has both title screens,) which is almost identical. The first two acts are replaced with worlds from the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 with the rest being the same as before. Though the back of the game's box shows it, the 3rd sunset stage for some reason is skipped and not playable in this version. The gameplay is identical and Chip and Dale were replaced with the Mario Bros., although the players can't choose who to play as in this game. The original title cards were also removed from this game, yet the credits were left intact here. Two new songs were also added: a rendition of "Cancan" (heard in the main menu) and the Super Mario Bros. overworld theme (heard throughout all "new" levels, including the castle stages). "

It's a shitty pirate hack of Squirrel King... which is an unlicensed/pirate game for the Genesis made by the Taiwanese company Gamtec (yes spelled that way). Squirrel King is actually a pretty good game. Unfortunately whoever hacked it to make it into that Super Mario thing didn't do a very good job. It plays like crap, the physics are all botched, the colour palette glitches epically in some levels and while some of the levels are actually redesigned to look like SMB levels, others are just right out of Squirrel King. Avoid this POS, or if you're really curious give a go in an emulator and you'll see what I mean.

To compare, here's a video of Squirrel King

The only good version of Super Mario Bros. for the Genesis is the Mairtrus hack which is a direct port of the NES game and is pretty much 100% accurate.

The auction jumped from $24.50 to $71.00 in the last minute of the auction.

I'd be happy to own it. Not because it's a good game, but just because it's a neat collectible.

It's a great game, you can play 2 players simultaneously, but the game gets harder in the later levels. One of the best Mario pirates I have ever played.

For you, yes. But you can't say what it's worth for someone else to have a rare item like that in their collection. I don't collect Genesis, but if I did, I would pay 70 bucks for something like this.

This game is a Terd and a half. If you want to play an awesome Mario game on Megadrive/Genesis, its Called 'Super Mario World 64' and it is a direct port (for the most part) of Super Mario World.

I feel sorry for the sucker that just dropped $71 bucks on this cheap pile of shit. I bet that sleeve is a copy printed on computer paper and in no way original (Like the majority of this cart).

Yeah......it is in no way, shape, or form a rare item and I can get as many cart only copies as I want for $15 a piece right now.

People assume (especially on ebay) that pirate carts are rare. Yes, some are very rare- but the majority, including this game, are a dime a dozen and can still be bought new in Russia and South America.

Really? Where can you buy as many copies as you want for 15 a pop?

I checked the completed listings for these carts on ebay and a couple have sold for over $100. I think I'd rather pay the extra $30 to get this cart than the other one IMO.

I don't know why people are saying it looks so bad. For a unlicensed game, it looks quite a bit better than a lot of licensed games that have been released at different points in time. The NES has a bunch of near unplayable officially licensed games for example.

It looks ok, but the gameplay is just absolutely awful. The physics are very crappy, half the time you can jump through walls, other times you can't. The jumping itself is very floaty and delayed, enemy hit detection is spotty and there are graphical glitches a-plenty.

Yeah the people who sell these carts on eBay are assholes and just rip unsuspecting buyers off. As already pointed out, this pirate game is super common and shouldn't cost more than $20. I've seen it sell for over $200 which is just insane. There are some very rare and very good pirate games out there, but this really isn't one of them.

Why are so many of you insisting that "it's only worth $XX"?

It's worth what it sells for, period. Value/Price is not determined by the preconceived notions made by someone who isn't making the purchase.

Buyers and sellers determine value, not window shoppers.

Reread what he wrote. If you can get it for $20, it's worth $20. Anything more than the cheapest you can get it for (everything else being equal) is overvalued. If someone wants to buy overpriced goods, that's their prerogative, but it's still a rather stupid thing to do.

I read it and understood it. I don't see a link to a site that's selling it for 20 bucks. I see a link that shows its value at around 70 bucks. He said "it shouldn't cost more than $20". So what? I think a Ferrari F40 shouldn't cost more than 50K, but that doesn't mean it's only worth 50K or that I can purchase one for 50K.

The ol' "I can get that for 15 bucks all day", or "that thing ain't worth more than 20 bucks because I bought one 6 years ago for that price" etc doesn't prove anything.

I'll eat my words if someone would be so kind as to show me where this game is available at a sub-20 dollar price tag. Until then, ~$70 seems to be the current market value.

While I agree with everything you said regarding the stratification of prices and the market, there's a bit more to it than that.

This is an example of putting a product into an area where the vast majority of buyers have no idea what the hell they're even looking at. Case in point, look at this thread. This game is 15+ years old, pirate carts and ROM downloads out the wazzoo, is a darling of internet video game humor sites, yet several in this thread had no idea about it. When you put something out there that buyers don't have any experience with, one of two things happens; either it tanks and doesn't sell because everyone's scratching their heads, or it gets overpriced because it's OMG RARE IMPORT L@@K.

In Parodius Duh's defense, if you are interested in unlicensed carts, you can find this for at or under $15 easily, all day long. Hell, I've got a copy of the original game it's based (Squirrel King) on in this selling forum right now for $10! Also off the top of my head http://www.famicong.com/ has it for under $15, and their stuff is outrageous.

At the end of the day, an item is worth what someone is willing to pay. This particular cart had three things going for it:

    - Sega items have increased in price lately.
    - It's Mario.
    - It's from Brasil.

The seller could have done a better job with the description but if someone is willing to pay $70+ to have a Mario game on their Genesis, more power to them. There are no unsuspecting buyers; only uninformed buyers. I'm surprised that his three listings weren't reported and removed considering that they're pirates.

I've yet to see a pirate cart removed from ebay. I'm sure it happens, but not often enough.

I don't see a price. Am I missing something? As best I can tell, they don't have anything in stock. I can't add anything to my cart or "buy it now"

Which is funny because years ago eBay were absolute Nazis about such things. In fact, there was a time when you couldn't even sell or buy imported games. I had a dozen or so listings for import Dreamcast and Saturn games killed for that reason about 11-12 years ago.
