    7/15: Kirby's Return to Dreamland

I had been working on this game pretty regularly for a few weeks now (if memory serves) and I was close to finishing the game last night when I decided to call it a night (at least I THOUGHT I was close!). I finished the level 6 boss and proceeded to go through level 7. After beating THAT boss I was sure it was the end but was treated to a surprise twist! I had one more level (and boss) to beat. It was an epic battle with the boss taking on three forms. I persisted and beat the boss' second form thinking that was it, but was treated to yet another cutscene! The boss' third form kicked my butt and I was expecting to go back to the first form. HAL/Nintendo threw a bone to their players, however, and start you at the incarnation you left off on at that point! I thoroughly enjoyed the credits and was perplexed by the ending until it revealed an "Extra Mode" to beat. I decided enough was enough when I found out it was the same game only harder. I beat the game (thought I didn't collect all the energy spheres...not a requirement to enjoy the game and see the ending) and that's that!

My list so far (from 1st game beat to most recent) looks like this:

    1) Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)
    2) Kickle Cubicle (NES)
    3) The Legend of Zelda (NES)
    4) Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii)
    5) Kirby's Return to Dreamland
My webcomic about three kitties and their humans. Touches on different subject matter (including video games) and updates every Sunday and Wednesday. (The kitties demand you read it!)

I beat Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex today. Didn't get anything but crystals. The game is really easy at first but then it gets frustrating. Still beat it in a day though.

I've played the original on the N64 numerous times and don't recall it being nearly as difficult. I could get to the end of the original without continuing. No such luck for the sequel. Had to switch to easy mode beacause a boss half way through the game kept destroying me. I had died numerous times before that as well. Still enjoyed the game, but a little bummed I had to take the easy route.

I totally agree regarding S&P: SS. I didn't play the original very much, though I totally enjoyed it. I downloaded it for the VC and beat it in one playthrough. Not sure about the difficulty, but I always play a game on Normal difficulty(if there are options) the first time through. Anyways, after I finished S&P: SS a few months ago I compared the time I spent on it and the original S&P....S&P 1 took me 2:20, while S&P:SS took me 12+ hours. So it's definitely not you. It took me over 5 times as long to beat SS, mostly due to it being a longer game I'm sure, but I never recall dying so many times in the original. I don't remember dying very much during the stages, but man those bosses were brutal.

Yeah, it was definitely the bosses that kept killing me. Even on Easy Mode there were two that were still brutal, but definitely more manageable. In the original, at first I thought the same thing about the bosses, but then I realized there was a close range attack, that made everything considerably easier. Kept hoping I was missing something similar (an unknown move) in Star Successor, but nope, my pitiful skills were to blame!

My lack of skills aside, still a really good game and well worth the $9 I paid for a brand new copy.

    2/25/12 Dead Space (PC)
    3/25/12 Half Life 2 - Episode 1 (PC)
    4/20/12 Dead Space 2 (PC)
    6/29/12 Borderlands (PC)
    6/30/12 Metal Slug 3 (Arcade)
    7/13/12 Contra (Arcade)
    7/17/12 Super Contra (Arcade)

Beating both arcade Contra games may not sound too impressive because you have unlimited credits with emulators, but what you may not know is that the arcade versions of the Contra games only allot you a certain amount of continues (something like 5 credits max for each game) before it kicks you back to the beginning.

Anyways, let's talk about a couple of poorly-designed games. Not just in the fact that it's made to suck quarters -I get that- but the list of bullshit is nearly endless. The aiming is horrible; it employs more than the standard 8-direction shot, so when you go from let's say aiming up, then back to forward, your shots are still going from 90 degrees to 75, to 66, to 45 etc despite the fact that your gun is pointed forward. This leads to many cheap deaths where you can't even shoot someone in front of you because you were shooting someone above you. Also, you move slow, so you're often run-down by the never-ending gauntlet of enemies parading in from both sides of the screen. But the most frustrating thing about both games is the full-body flip that transpires when you push the 'jump' button. Who's the sadist that thought this would be a good idea? Your sprite is already large as it is on the narrow vertical screen, and trying to jump in-between gunfire coming in from both straight-ahead and up-above is like trying to parallel-park a Mack Truck. Of course though, when you jump to avoid gunfire, you usually just end up landing on of the earlier-mentioned enemies who ran in from off the screen.

Contra was definitely the more manageable game, as I managed to beat that using only 1 continue. Super Contra took me all 5 or 6 continues to make it through and it was a goddamn miracle. I'd like to meet the guy who designed Super C, and more importantly, the QC team that approved this fucking miserable excuse for a game. Just play the 3rd level and you'll immediately see that these people have no clue about what game design is. It's a jungle level that's cropped even further along the top and bottom, thus making the already cramped viewpoint even less existant, but because some genius thought that it would be a great idea, there are trees that parallax-scroll along the front plane, thus covering up your view completely. To top it off, there are enemies who are standing on nothing in midair and shooting at you as well as guys raining down from nowhere while these trees are covering up the screen. Actually, every level after the first is programmed out of hate for everything that a good game stands for. Super C is nothing but one large stinking half-baked special-ed designed pile of shit. Sorry about the long rant, but I literally just beat this game 15 minutes ago and am still fuming about it.

20)Star Wars: Battle For Hoth(IOS, ?JUN)
    21)Dragon Quest VI (DS, 01JUL)
    and...
    22)Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages(GBC, 18JUL)

About Oracle of Ages... I bought it and Seasons not long after they were released. I finished Seasons immediately and had a hard time getting the linking transfer to work. It was 10 years ago, so I'm not sure what the details were, but I know it wasn't doing what I thought it was supposed to do. So I finally had enough and decided to pick up Ages about a week or two ago and play it without linking the games.

I'm not ashamed to say that I used a guide(I have a Ages/Seasons strat guide that I really don't remember buying). Ages was still confusing as hell even using the guide. There were a few parts(Mermaid dungeon, the quest for the water dungeon, and the water dungeon itself) that were frustrating enough, but I can only imagine how many times I would have wandered around in circles trying everything under the sun to advance the game. Time switching and water level changing mechanics/puzzles are some of my least favorite mechanics in video games.

Still, it was a very fun that I enjoyed plenty. It was a breath of fresh air to actually control Link with a d-pad and face buttons, rather than a touch screen. The game also didn't take very long to get going, unlike Spirit Tracks, which had destroyed my will to live after all of the exposition and such. Nice, traditional graphics were a plus as well.

Oh yeah, best item in the game: switch hook!
I'm just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.

I think this (Dark Cloud) was the longest I've ever taken to end a game, I believe the clock was at 93 hours when I was done. Granted a few of those hours were from long pauses, but not many. I went from experimenting with it, to loving it, to being bored with it, to almost hating it in the end. I'll put the second off for a while.

Off to random.org to pick my next game. I can't think the guy that suggested that site/app enough. It's got me playing again instead of just collecting games that sit indefinitely.

Yikes, it's been a long time since I last beat a game. I really had to dig to find my last post in this topic. Although I guess it's understandable, considering I've been playing a game that'll probably have around 80 hours on the clock when I finish it, another game I started in March I kind of abandoned and still need to get back to and finish, and there was a gap where I wasn't playing much of anything. Anyway, I'm tinkering around with the second quest in Zelda now.

I really don't get some of the negativity for Legends. It is by far the easiest Castlevania game I've ever played(and I've played almost every one of them), but it was still a short and fun game. Shame about it being removed from the timeline.

    7/27/12:

Smash TV (via Midway Arcade Treasures on GC)

This is a fun little mindless romp and I am glad I finally sat down and made it through the entire thing! I used quite a few continues on this sucker....I can imagine how unfair the balance would be in real life if you were playing for your life against an endless barrage of enemies on a game show! I fell into the "big money...big prizes" mentality, often risking my life for some 2600" television or cash. That's probably where most of my lost lives came from. I can say the ending is not the most spectacular out there, but it's not exactly a deep game in the first place. I don't know how the Xbox or PS2 versions map the controls, but the Gamecube's controls worked out quite well, with the control stick moving your guy and the C Stick aiming/firing your weapon in all directions.

Unlocked all levels and the first "secret" character. Decent game, price is a little too high; $10 would have been better. Most levels are meh, with only the Warehouse and Hanger really standing out. I am beginning to think those are the only levels that are any good in the entire series. Lastly, something feels off about the air tricks: maybe I am forgetting something but I am not getting many points when staying in the pipe.

I've had Mega Man II for years and only tried it out when I first found it. After beating Castlevania Legends, I had a hankering for more GB love. Looking through my meager GB collection I thought I'd give MMII a try. I was very pleasantly surprised to say the least. I had no idea Mega Man made such a smooth transition to the GB. The music wasn't up to par for a Mega Man game, and it wasn't as challenging as I expected, but it played very well and looked great.

Revived my N64 this summer. Here is what I've finished:

Goemon's Great Adventure - All 44 entry passes
    Castlevania
    Hybrid Heaven
    Mission Impossible
    Gauntlet Legends

With the exception of Castlevania all the other games have been in my collection for years and I skimmed over them initially (except Goemon, which I first played in 02 and nearly finished) and decided to pop them in after reading some old articles online. Ended up enjoying them all. I love it when that happens.

Here is what else I can recall finishing this year:

    Max Steel - Dreamcast
    Spiderman - Nes
    Widget - Nes
TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan - Game Boy
    Pocahontas - Genesis

Controls struck me as a tad slippery at times and the game isn't particularly talented at indicating where it wants me to go (and that varies from level to level in intensity). Otherwise a great game with a fun soundtrack and some decent visuals.

    37. 4 Elements

Fun times all around. This is, basically, another variation of Bejeweled, but with a fantasy setting and story behind it. It's really frustrating to play at times, but an overall fun game. Worth the few dollars. Also, if you're looking into getting this game, get the PC version. I can't imagine trying to play this with a proper controller.

I just beat Heavy Rain for PS3 and I gotta say I loved the interweaving storyline. The identity of the killer was also a nice swerve. I'm going to be spending even more time going back to play the DLC episode and perhaps snatching up a few extra trophies. Here is my updated list:

I friend got this a flea market and tossed it my way. I'm normally not one for these shooter type games, but I found this really fun and easy to play. Great sound track, reasonably impressive visuals....story was kinda predictable. Certainly worth the $15 he spent on it.
