Default Simply cant find the name of an old PC game

Ok ill describe it as best as i can:

It was around 95-99 release, somewhere around there.

    You played a general.
Your started off with a small army and a little bit of cash
    You played round by round.
You could decide where you placed the units around the map before the action started.
    It was in 3d (ish)
It was set a long time ago. One of the artilary untis is a cannon on wheels with 2 men pushing it.
You got a bit of cash at the end of each battle you won and you could purchase additonal units( i think there was also the option of spending money repairing your units also but not sure)
As far as i can remember the maps werent huge.
Also i dont think you had a base or anything it was just rounds and rounds of battles.

IVe been looking for this game for years, if i find it it will be a miracle. Thanks for any help you might have.

    Cheers

    Zedd

There are no machines in it, no tanks or anything.
I think it might not be turn based, after you set your units nd start the battle i think it goes to real time strategy.
There are only humans fighting humans, no orcs or elves or anything
Seems to be a historical type game.
As fas as i remember you dont build any buildings or have a base just an army
There is definately a campaign mode.
battleground, civil war generals and cossacks seem in the right sort of area but i dont think its any of them

Can you tell us anything else about the map? Did it have hexagonal squares, or square squares, or...?
You are startled by a grim snarl. Before you, you see 1 Red dragon. Will your stalwart band choose to (F)ight or (R)un?

Was the game set in Europe, Asia or was it in a fictional world ? And if it was based on a real time line then what nations are involved. Narrowing it down would make it easier to find.

    Possibly Sid Meier's Gettysburg?

There were no hexaganol sqaures, it was the sort of graphics similar to the very first command and conquor.
The only map i can remember is a one in the countryside. There was a supply convoy coming through and you had to set your troops up to intercept it.
I am unsure if i was a particular nation. IT is set on earth, no fictional world
The physics engine took into account height(hills) i beleive when dealing with artilary rounds.

Sid Meier's Gettysburg looks very close but that looks more complicated and larger maps than the one im thinking of. In the one i want an artilary unit is literally 3 cannons on wheels and 2 blokes pusing each cannon. Something like that, its a pretty hazy memory

That was going to be my guess too. Sounds like Civil War.
