Tempest did not think that his insinuations about CGE, his comments about whatever is going on being "worse than a death threat", would deter anyone from the show. Further, when I asked him to explain himself, he felt he did not need to. He said only if I could produce a person who would not go as a result of his words would he apologize.
So I sent that exact quote to the people who HAD asked me about it, either in PM or email.
Mind you, he and I had AIM conversations about what was bothering him - and believe it or not, it was all about one of our site contributors, who Tempest feels has signed him up for a bunch of spam email lists and magazine subscriptions. Yup, that's the "dark, sinister" reason. I asked for proof on this, by the way, weeks ago when this first started, and haven't seen anything yet. Not that it has anything to do with me, Digital Press, or Classic Gaming Expo.
So, we had an instant message conversation about this yesterday.

Which brings us back to the beginning of my post. He never did explain, and when I questioned him about it, he decided instead that he didn't feel he had to because what he said couldn't possibly influence anyone. I hope it never does again.
So that's the story. Hopefully this person's words will NOT prevent you from going to CGE. As you can see, it's a hoax. He's getting spam, it has nothing to do with the show, and hopefully Tempest and Scott can work this out together.

If what I'm reading is correct then Matt is just a pussy who can't deal with his own problems directly and pisses on his own friends, in hopes they bend over backwards to solve his issues for him when they don't move fast enough for him.
He tried to make a big enough stink so that others (his trusted friends as a matter of fact) , who WERE NOT involved, dropped everything they were doing and saw to it that HIS issues were dealt with. Sounds like a couple of people really need to work this out amongst themselves - and leave the rest of us, DP, and CGE the hell out of it. Some of the insinuations come real close to being actionable when you have people saying they're not going to go, and CGE Services (a) loses money on the deal and (b) can prove that one person's statements, which were dliberately left vague and inflammatory, caused that.
But that's just me, and I'm a weeeeee bit cranky right now. You wouldn't like me when I'm cranky.
Ok this has gone far enough. It’s sad to see so many people so many people would so quickly join in this witch-hunt. It really hurts to read these comments as I considered you all to be my friends. This is quite a slap in the face.
Although I know you’d all like to pin this squarely on me, I think there’s enough blame to go around. Yes this whole thing started with Scott’s spam. Not just spam (which is annoying enough), but signing me up for magazines, cd clubs, and things like that. Don’t know why he’s doing it; I thought we were friends (prototypes and Easter Eggs sorta go together), but that’s really not important right now. As so many of you have pointed out, that’s between Scott and me (Hey Scott if you’re reading this e-mail me and we’ll talk).
Now I’ll be first to admit that my first message about “sinister things” wasn’t a good idea. At that point I really didn’t want to take this whole thing public (I figured it was no one else’s business), so I just left it intentionally vague. Lord knows I didn’t think it would cause this much uproar. Now despite what a lot of you think Scott IS involved with the CGE, so that’s why I put the “I don’t feel comfortable going” comment
Now after the initial tiny uproar I probably should have clarified this whole mess, as eventually it started to snowball. However I did talk it over with Joe and I thought I made it clear that I wasn’t trying to disparage the CGE, DP, or even Joe. But I would like to point out at this point you are judged by the friends you keep, and even though I don’t think Joe has anything to do with the spam, the fact that he was a close friend of Scott’s did make me wonder a bit. Was this a reasonable thing to think? Who knows? But at the time I was angry and the spam kept coming (and still does to this day I might add).
So I thought everything had finally been settled and this whole ugly incident had been put to bed (although not quite as neatly as I would have liked). Then comes the party thread. Now looking back on the tread I did notice Joe’s little “cool” smiley there which I swear wasn’t there when I first read it (perhaps it didn’t load on my computer). So naturally when I read his comment I took offense. I thought everything had been smoothed over and here he was saying “Who says you were invited”, a nice slap in the face. Since I really don’t know why he said that I thought I would just play it cool. Joe’s second comment about me being a stick in the mud really didn’t sit well since I was still angry about the previous incident. So I said that he knew why I was upset. I honestly didn’t think that that little comment would open up the can of worms again, but it did. So in anger I left the board.
So this brings us to the IM conversation I had with Joe (the one he’s so kindly posted). Now I’d like to take the time here to say that posting a log of a private conversation is not cool. It’s rude, tacky, and leads to people taking things out of context (which is just what has happened). So Joe comes to me and says that people are concerned about the comments I made. Now I still can’t believe anyone wouldn’t go to CGE because of what I’ve said. Hell I’m going to CGE myself, I thought people knew this. Anyway I told Joe that I thought he was overreacting a bit, but I didn’t realize that Joe was that serious. Joe wanted me to post a public apology to all the people, but I didn’t think I needed to since I still wasn’t believing this whole “scared people away from CGE” thing. But I did promise I would post something so here it is.
Please don’t stay away from CGE because of my comments, they were never meant to be taken that way. Go and have fun (like I am).
Now Joe and I have a few other things that we need to work out, but once again that’s no one else’s concern. Just know that I’m sorry for the vagueness, that was a oversight on my part (I thought I was actually doing the right thing there).
However I am concerned about everyone’s harsh reaction to this. Some of those comments were vicious and uncalled for (Fuck You Matt? Real nice Adam). I guess I learned something else today too.

First of all before you accuse someone of something you had better have some proof. How do you know Scott did anything?

for what its worth guys you're still leaving a lot of the story out, for those of us trying to make sense of this. not that i have a need or right to know. but it would make more sense if anyone involved could explain why matt and scott are fighting. surely there must be a starting point where things started to sour.
man... i dunno, i have a good friend who is a world class collector, a regular at our trademeets, as big of gamer as you could meet and he wont have anything to do with the online community. he is heavily involved in our cart project and considered coming "out" to help the project but thought better of it after following the boards for a few weeks. he said roughly "i have better things to do than fight with people online, why should people get so angry about games anyway?"
i think thats a damn good question.

Wow, I feel a little bit odd in this whole thing, I never saw Tempest's comment as anything more than both his business and his reasons for not going. The way that he worded what he said,

that just sounds to me that something was either wrong with him or involved only him directly. When I first read it, I disregarded it. I was already bound for CGE, and I didn't see this as any reason for myself and my family not to attend. When I saw this thread, I did start to look at it in a different light, but as I write this, I'm alright about going again. And I don't mean to be taking sides or anything here, but I do feel that it has been blown out of perportion. Think about it, if it had been something very serious such as a bomb threat, I would at least LIKE to think that Tempest would have clued us in it and warned us ahead of time.
True, the wording after I read it again with all these added comments does seem to be quite "sinister", but it was only after everyone started getting scared about this that I took some notice. But after reading everything that everyone else has said here, it doesn't seem to be anything more than a "hoax", though I hesitate to use that word.
Tempest, I don't know you really, and I won't claim to. All I can say is I don't have a problem with you, nothing against you. But to be blunt, you scared the shit out of the people here. And hopefully everything has been cleared up enough that people are feeling at least a little bit better. (And please, try your very best not to scare anyone else like this again, we'd really appreciate it lol).
