Crisis force.
You beat me to it. I managed to pick this game up for the Famicom four or five years ago, and I've played through it with a friend at least once a year since then. It isn't anywhere near as challenging as Life Force, but that's why people agree to play it with me--you can actually beat the game without cheating. I know there are people who can beat Life Force without cheating, but I'm not one of them. Crisis Force is more of a casual shooter, and it's actually more enjoyable with two players. It's #1 on my list of Famicom games that should have been released in the USA.
Going to have to throw in my vote for the rather overlooked, (imo)
Monster in My Pocket.
I played it for years growing up without even realizing it was based on a toy/franchise. Anyway, good fun with coop, and a decent challenge too. It's a beatemup/platformer. The music definitely has the Konami feel, too and there's some memorable tunes in it. Give it a shot.
Ten worthy coop titles:
8 Eyes ... Whoever plays Cutrus gets it a little rough, but it's an underrated game that is definitely more fun with a second human, even if they're just messing around most of the time.
Battletoads ... It's simply a great, creative beat-'em-up.
Cabal ... Shallow and short lived, but great fun to blow through from time to time.
Double Dragon II ... A rock solid 2-player option.
M.U.L.E. ... You can cooperate for the good of the colony!
Pipe Dream ... 2-player Pipe Dream can pave the way for some awesomely executed strategies. One player distracts the ooze, the other builds an elaborate plumbing weave, disaster likely ensues.
Super C ... I'm burnt out on Contra 1, thus making Super C the next best option.
Tengen Tetris ... The co-op mode is surprisingly enjoyable and a cool sense of teamwork can emerge.
TMNT III ... 2-player beat-'em-ups, there's really not that much to say about them.
Trog ... I've always dug this game's humourous prehistoric vibe and the gameplay is high quality single screen arcade-y stuff.
I dont have 10 but my mind is boggled that the first two posters didnt mention River City Ransom.
Bury me with my money......*dies*
Contra, Double Dragon, and TMNT 2 the Arcade Game... and don't forget BLADES OF STEEL or TECMO SUPER BOWL.
Ehh, I've yet to succeed in getting into that game. There's a lot more depth to it than a typical beat-'em-up, but I'd much rather fire up Double Dragon.
Haha, strictly speaking, Blades Of Steel and Tecmo Super Bowl are competitive, not cooperative. Played some Blades Of Steel just the other day with a friend, it's still a winner.
Yea, my last two aren't co-op but they are great two-player expericences
