i really hope it happens this year. doesn't seem like it's a sure thing.

We can't wait to reserve our booth!
I do apologize for the shortage in updates, I'm still waiting to hear new word myself. Last I heard Joe was heading down to Vegas soon to scout some locations for this years CGE. But as with last year, we made everything come together in a short amount of time =D Thanks for the support and please keep posting away.
P.S. RetroGaming Roundup, we would love to have ya at the show
I love ALL Video Games with all my heart and soul
Dude were there as always!
As always, if there is anything I can do to help, let me know - since I am a local and all.
Real quick guys....
We should certainly get something posted on the CGE website asap, but there will not be a CGE in 2011. The main reason is the location. Things with the Tropicana did not end well and they (quite blatantly actually) outright tried to overcharge us by several thousand dollars. Credit cards were charged without consent, disputes were filed, and it was just a mess in general...one that STILL isn't completely cleaned up. CGE doesn't make money - it never has and probably never will. So we have to be extremely careful with what we spend and we simply don't have the money to allow ourselves to get ripped-off.
We have a couple ideas as to try for the next show, but it's going to take some time to decide where to try and and whether or not we have the energy to make a go of it again. It's pretty frustrating for us when all we're really trying to do is find a permanent home that's going to charge us a fair, honest price yet every hotel finds it necessary to try and stick it to us somehow or another.
(on behalf of John & Joe)
Man that's so LAME!!! But I totally understand but dammit. Have you guys tried the new convention center here in Vegas? Maybe they will treat things a bit more professionally, and they have tons of rooms there and are very close to the strip.
I personally think that before you guys say no dice this year, you should reach out to us in the DP community.
There are lots of us out here. I mean, if you are making no money from this, why not get a hand from the community for a good location. I just moved to Vegas, so I don't know of many places for an Expo, but with a community nation-wide, and even around the world, you guys should not have to sit there and try to pull the entire burden onto yourselves.
Maybe if somebody out in the DP community can help make some calls (I am sure somebody out there has a connection to this somewhere in the US), they could privately talk with you guys about a location.
Like you guys said, you make no money, so what will it hurt to reach out to the community for a hand. You guys don't have to feel like it is a heavy burden when you have a huge community of people more than willing to make some calls for places they know, maybe some people willing to help you out with whatever.
If you were in it for a profit then sure, pull it on your shoulders, but there is no need to do that when it is just an awesome gathering for us gamers.
I personally suggest reaching out to us. I know people in San Diego, San Francisco, Florida, I mean, all over the nation, and that is just me.
Turn CGE into an awesome grassroots campaign to get a cge 2011 rocking. And if you think I am joking, I can easily start calling people tomorrow I know. Why not? Why put the entire burden on you guys. Now, I am not saying I would take it over, hahaha, no way in hell I could do that. You guys have done it enough to know more about it than most of us, but seriously, why not have us help you guys?
Well, coming from Sean on behalf of John and Joe I would say we can kiss it goodby this year. That is too bad, we appreciate the great years we have had at CGE and hope that it will live on in the future.
Would it help to take it to a smaller, less nice hotel? I know it was at the Plaza in past years (which is currently closed for renovations) but isn't there a site on fremont street or off the strip that would be cheaper?
That said, there is no way we are going to miss Vegas this year, so were going to plan our own party out there this year, and we won't be staying at the Tropicana.
joe told me in some time in august when I talked to him on fb.
Edit: I saw sean's post and that sucks that CGE won't happen this year(I talked to joe on fb chat about a week ago and he said august)
if CGE returns next year keep it in vegas.)
We certainly appreciate the offers for help guys...the fact of the matter is, we've been doing this since 1999. We've had help from dozens (if not hundreds) of people in the past including a professional publicity firm. The problem is actually fairly simple. For the amount of space that CGE requires, we just don't generate enough revenue for the hotel that's hosting the event. What we really need is a "Plaza-like" hotel in the older part of Las Vegas with a little more space than what the Plaza has to offer. We've gone out there and looked ourselves and enlisted the help of the Las Vegas Convention Authority and haven't found the right place yet apparently. Each year we THINK we have found our new permanent home, but when all is said and done, there's always a problem and it generally stems from this hotel or that hotel attempting to take advantage of us in one way or another.
What sets CGE apart from other local shows is our museum and the alumni. Our museum display is the most comprehensive display of videogame historical items ANYWHERE in the world. We have dozens of items that can't be seen anywhere else. We can't afford to move our collection out of Las Vegas again. The support we've gotten from the alumni over the years has been so strong due to the relationships we've forged with many of them but also because most of them actually enjoy hanging out in Vegas for a weekend. The show pretty much has to remain in Las Vegas.
So if anyone knows of a place in Las Vegas that is near the strip and has 25,000+ square feet of convention space and is interested in filling about 400 hotel room nights for the weekend that will basically cover the cost of the convention space, by all means, please let us know.
All that we require to put on the show is that the show be able to pay it's own bills. We will not "pay" to put on the show and, quite frankly, we don't really like the idea of asking people to "donate" money so we can do it either. We're happy to accept any corporate sponsorship however. If any of you know of a company that would be interested in sponsoring the show, please put us in touch with each other.
Last but not least, please don't misunderstand me here. I'm not saying CGE is dead...it's not. We'll figure it out - we always do. It's just that for 2011, there isn't enough time and we don't currently have any concrete ideas as to where we could afford to go.
Organizer, Classic Gaming Expo
hope to see you return in the future though.
I don't know if this is a popular idea, but why not pair up with another convention? There seems to be tons of video game related conventions throughout the year (ie Penny Arcade Expo), perhaps it could be paired up?
Though, I'll be honest, I will be unable to go to any convention if it is not the last weekend of July/first weekend of August.
<Evan_G> i keep my games in an inaccessable crate where i can't play them
You don't want to ask us for money, but if we donate it anyway, then it is just helping the cause. Besides, I am one of the people that brought that subject up, so if it starts happening, it is my fault, not yours.
I am still kinda new to Vegas, but just because I feel like it, I will hit google and maybe make a few calls this weekend. The worst that can happen from it is finding out that there is nothing out there that you guys are looking for. I really only have one connection out here, so I will get ahold of him this weekend and see if he knows about anything
I am not any kind of organizer, but I don't mind helping where I can
I was speaking with a friend about this, and he mentioned a great idea. Why isn't there a video game expo that's HUGE and JUST for video games? You used to have CES, and now E3, but those also had electronics mixed in. WHY isn't there a show that's tailored to JUST video games? Hell, the video game industry has outgrown the movie industry, or so I hear. I think the industry is large enough to hold it's own super huge expo every year.
The problem with any sort of classic gaming expo, is that there is really only a handful of people that are even into this sort of thing. I'd say that we are probably 1 percent of the gamers out there. Why not start a super massive gaming show that is catered to both the modern AND classic gamers? If such a show existed then maybe Nintendo, Sony, Sega, Microsoft, etc etc would attend that show instead of just a general "electronics" show. With the support of the big companies it could easily thrive.
This would of course be an advantage to us classic gamers as well. You could have classic gaming mixed in with the modern, or even have two sides of the show. Each side would generate interest for each other, and the sponsorships of the big boys would ensure that the show could go on for years to come.
Another thing it would do is expose retro gaming to the modern gaming fans a bit more, which would only make our community larger!
Maybe the focus needs to just change a bit. Maybe we as classic gamers cannot alienate ourselves from all the others.
I honestly cannot believe that there is no general Modern/Classic or just a gaming expo catered to video gaming ONLY already in existance. This is a huge hole that needs to be filled and I think the potential for an awesome show is amazing if approached at the right angle.
I think, for the younger generation, that they might like to see the presence of these classic games in relation to what they know.
Coast Casinos - Suncoast, Gold Coast. The Orleans
Station Casinos - Palace Station, etc
Additionally, if money is a problem, I'd think increasing the entrance fee
would be acceptable.
I have thought about the Palace Station myself. It's still very close to the strip (although would have to take a quick cab to the strip), and it's a more budget minded Casino/Hotel. It's really geared a bit more for the locals.
