Modifying Famicom controller to work with a NES?

I have a broken Famicom system and was thinking about cutting the controllers loose from the system and attaching a NES controller plug on the end. Anyone try this before or know if it is even possible to wire the NES style plug onto the end of a famicom controller?

There shouldn't be any reason you can't, though I would question why as the wires come out of the side of the controllers and the cable length is quite short(perhaps you could solder in a full length NES controller cable, though you'd have to scrap one to do it).

If you take apart the Famicom the controllers are likely plugged into the motherboard with a special connector, so you dont have to cut them out so much as just snip that end off after pulling it out of the socket.

Here is what I hope is a semi useful article, it isnt exactly what you're doing but it has the pinout for the NES controller connector and will show you how to identify the wires in your stripped Famicom controllers.

Thanks for the info! I really hope I can attach the full length NES cable. Im going to attempt this in the coming weeks, Ill post the results!

Any success with this? I was thinking of attempting this too since I got a busted Famicom system and a few extra NES controllers that could be donors.

Wouldn't the wiring be a bit very different with the second Famicom controller due to the built in microphone feature and lack of start/select buttons? I dont understand how it would be feasible to do this with the second controller at all.

The mic is a separate/extra wire on the connector inside. The start and select buttons would be the only issues on the p2 controller.
