I like the theme days as much as everyone else, but I think if eventually everyone starts to get kind of bored, then either two things are going to happen: either people are going to want to play different games or leave. I will be at SJC like I am at everyone one I can go to and I believe that it is completely up to Nick on what should happen during the gathering because it is his store. At the same time you can only take so much of a certain type of game when you are in a store filled with all different types of games. These types of SJCs are double-edged swords because you get to enjoy systems/games that you might have missed out on because you are too young to have enjoyed them, but in the same aspect you might not enjoy these days for the same reason. The reason I fell in love with SJC, expanded my videogaming horizons and made so many friends is because of variety!

So...I guess I just rambled a little bit much but what I'm trying to say is that limiting entire days to certain types of games can be fun for a certain period of time but in the end might ruin the magic of SJC. Also, don't take this as a "all I wanna do is play SFIV!!!!111!11!" comment because I don't really plan on it...Garou: Mark of the Wolves is a different story though .

Oh and I think I'd enjoy the themed days more if I was only at SJC for a couple of hours because I had to go home at 4. :P

I don't have a problem with themes/celebrations at all. I don't remember what happened with the Jaguar or what the theme was that day....I think I just said I'm bringing Protector....maybe it was a shooter day or something. Anyway I think Nick understands what I meant now.

Also for various reasons I'm hardly ever in the store any more, so playing any game with a group is a novelty to me. :-)

Look up "emulator" or "emulation" in DP search and see what a bad idea people think it is to talk about emulation.

I have been to over a hundred gaming events and I can't recall ever being at one where emulation was prohibited...in fact the big ones like CGE and Phillyclassic had computers running emulators all over the place.
OK man chill, you do not have to be so agressive with this I just figured that this was the case still. I have not re-read the rules on emulation since the early 2000's so I figured that it was still the same as it has always been.

    baloo that makes NO sense.

you want it to be themed...but you go on to say that themed days equal more variety?

like sal said, you're only there until 4. dreamcast day was cool, but we started running out of stuff to play around 6 or 7. from there it was "just slap it in, see if it sucks".

it culminated in my playing TD6 and people arguing about it.

while i agree we play a lot of fighting games...how many good co-op games do they make anymore? most stuff is lan or online. fighting games aren't.

yea, the 16 bit lends itself to a lot of co-op. Streets of Rage, Toejam and Earl, Final Fight, Road Rash, etc.

i don't even know what the hell i'm rambling on about anymore. started out with a point...lost it a minute in. going to go back to Musou Orochi Z...

IMHO, unless it was say, CD-i day or 32x day or Sega CD day or Virtual Boy day, the odds of someone getting bored are near impossible. There's so many different genres of games to play, single player multiplayer Sports puzzle platformer, the possibilities are endless on most systems.

I will agree that if we are limited to playing certain types of GAMES people will definitely get bored, no doubt about it. Systems however, I would say that it depends.

The emulation restriction is sort of hit or miss with me. I wouldn't mind someone bringing in a flash cart or reproduction of a really rare game a la Nintendo Campus Challenge, but I was never a big fan of playing games 16-bit era and back with the Xbox controller.

I think that was that shooter tournament day. But it felt like a no-theme day really.

I think in terms of Dreamcast day, the idea was there, but it wasn't executed in the right way. Certain games were limited to certain times and certain TVs, which limited the fun. By the time people started coming around there were a lot of sub-par titles that weren't really worth playing set up to play. Why set up crappy titles like Hydro Thunder and Pen Pen Trialcelon and Ready 2 Rumble boxing and make people play them? That doesn't really work.

Having a certain system(s) but no certain game limit would be fine, because of the sheer amount of titles there are to play. I think it should be like this:

Have maybe 3-4 TVs, 1 of each of the 16-bit system set up, and have people swap out games whenever they want. That way, when people get bored, they can just switch out.

And to be quite honest, Dreamcast has a rather limited library.

Hydro Thunder is great. Pen Pen is also good. You speak lies.

Dreamcast has (domestically) somewhere around 250 titles. If you find that to be limiting.... just think about how many games that are generic sports titles for each 16-bit system. I'd say that out of the Genesis' 705 domestic titles, that 150 or so at least are generic sports titles? I'd think thats a fair assumption. The amount of actual good titles on that system...brings you down quite a few more. If you look at the number of legitimate good titles on each system, I'd say we can blaze through them in a matter of hours, unless we get held up playing Columns 3. Then you gotta factor in the same old bullshit on SNES, and whatever we could possibly fathom on TG-16. Themed days overall give a very limited selection. Why limit ourselves to any specific system set at all when SOMEONE could just play it at ANY gathering? Makes no sense to me to limit ourselves.

See, I like the themed days because:

It leads to more tournaments. On the dreamcast day there was like 5 tournaments as opposed to say 1.

Allows others to get exposed to games they normally wouldn't be exposed to.

Allows for different genres and single-player games to be played that normally wouldn't be played.

Really, on non-themed days most want to play Neo Geo and Street Fighter IV, and maybe someone will bring some real oddball console to play. Themed days gets other systems to shine.

I should probably just ask this now.

Drex, do you have an idea when you might do a 32bit theme in the near future as well? Or are you not that far into the whole planning stages yet?

I only wonder because once you do I can bring around my Virtual Boy for those who want to check it out and play it...

Bring it on a day when there's no theme.

I vote that it could be themed by genre and not system. That would be better.

I take everyone's opinions in this group very seriously when planning SJC and now is no different. Obviously there is still some difference of opinion. Luckily we have some time before the gathering so I ask everyone to chime in with a response to what I am going to propose.

I still strongly feel like we as a group need to appreciate more things than modern gaming. Also I feel that most of the time is being clogged up with 1 or 2 games and that isn't fun for eveyone. So I propose the following:

If I choose to do something special (an "event day" I suppose), I will take the front or back of the store (depending on how much room we may need), and make a display of sorts. The other half of the store will be free for whatever system you guys want to play...however, if 1 game is being played for 2+ hours and someone else wants to play something, I ask that we switch things up for most of the day...there is always time at night when it gets slower to pick that game back up.

Again, I am trying to make an event that will please everyone (and I know that is not always going to happen). Also please note that these "theme" days will not happen all the time, but I would like them to pop up every once and a while. So please chime in now with your opinion on the matter so we can make this gathering a good time.

    Thanks.

Ya'all need to chill out and listen to Nick. Don't make me request we play nothing but Game.Com or R-Zone one day, because I can make it happen.

I like that as well. I also think that we should leave it at that because we are going to start to get into arguments with those that are acutal SJC veterans and those who are not and don't know what they are talking about.

still gonna try to make it...this would be a great time to use a baby bjorn hands free kit.

Jef could watch Luci while i win the footbag tourney on Genesis.

i like the idea of a theme at least for part of the day, or at a couple of 'stations' throughout the store...this way, you can count on some structured fun along with the freedom to stretch out a little bit.

whether it is theme by decree, or un-official theme by playing the same game (SFIV et al) ad naus... i prefer neither.

i believe the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

let's work this out so everyone feels included and feels excited to attend!

My idea: a 'Theme Zone'. That is to say, on one or two of the screens throughout the day run theme hardware/games, and conduct whatever the tourn(ies) of the day might be on the big trinitron at a certain time.

    Thoughts?

I thought the original plan was fine, all I objected to was the non-inclusion of SFII, emulation (I could bring my laptop with some wicked Mega Drive games), and add ons...although really IMO Sega CD deserves its own DAY with the amount of laughable crapware....maybe a Sega CD/3DO/CDi laughfest at some point....just be glad I don't own the place, good lord.

I have fond memories of trying to get credits in Neurodancer and getting my eye eaten out by a hawk in Robinson's Requiem back at the old store. Hell, Robinson's Requiem was so good actually it made Jeff cry tears of joy. You can't say that about many games.

So yeah, I'm down for an FMV game day. I would actually be happy with pretty much any theme.
