Anyhow I voted Mr. Do. Each game in the Do series came up with a ne winnovative way to attack and defeat your enemies- either dropping apples on them, hammering unicorns or running around an amusement park. heck the Do'ster even had a Neo-Geo game and a great remake on the SNES and Game Boy systems.

All Dig Dug had going for him was making more potholes on the NYC streets.

I pity all of those pathetic souls who would place the repetitive, yet over-hyped gameplay of Dig-dug over the EXITING adventures of a Super-Clown who hurls magic super-balls at dinosaurs.
Truly, Mr. Do! is vastly superior.

Yep. There is just so much more to "do" in Mr. Do's gameplay. Whereas Dig Dig is relatively one-dimensional. My vote goes to the game with more depth, MR. DO!

By the way, anyone else here use to do the 255 lives trick in Mr. Do? I used to do it all the time and once in this arcade, the stupid lady who owned it went and unplugged my machine since she said it had obviously "malfunctioned".. damn lady... 25 cents didn't come cheap to me at the time! >

Mr. Do! is just a rip of Dig Dug. There was only one Mr. Do! in my town and it was a a showbiz pizza on the other side of town. My parents hated Showbiz pizza so I only got to play it 4-5 times ever. Dig Dug, however, I first played in beta form at a Dallas technology expo in 1981 along with 2 arcade games that never made it into production in the USA. from 83-86 there was a Dig Dug game at the grocery store my mom shoped so I'd get 4 quarters everytime we went. by the time it was moved out I could play on just one quarter and had to leave the game.

That 255 lives trick is... well, TRICKY:

When an apple appears in the first two rows of level 1, build a tunnel from the bottom of the screen to the location directly below the apple with a thin layer of dirt to keep the apple in place. Kill all enemies until only one remains. Then, intentionally lose your lives until you are on your last life. Position yourself under the apple and wait for the enemy to approach. Dig the dirt under the apple so it falls while shooting the enemy to kill it. The enemy must die before the apple hits Mr. Do. If done correctly, the game will glitch, and the life counter will increase to 255. Do not earn a bonus life, as it will set the number of lives to zero. Note: This trick only works in the Taito version of the game.

Yep. It makes you wonder how in the world did anyone figure out tricks like this. I don't even remember how I learned it.. but I'm sure it was by watching some other kid play the game (which is how we all learned our arcade "tricks" back in the day.. well that and "Joystik" magazine

). It just boggles the mind though :P

By the way, all you Dig Dug voters.. ever play Zig Zag? For a while especially in arcades where I lived, Zig Zag was the Dig Dug bootleg of choice (actually it was hard finding a Dig Dug in and of itself sometimes :/ ) but anyway, it's a little more varied since it gives you a pick axe to speed things up a little

Mr. Do!.

I also like Dig Dug, very much so, but the first time I played Mr. Do! in that grimy arcade near where I used to live, I just couldn't get enough.

When I found out that it- along with Space Fury- was coming out for the ColecoVision, well, all seemed right in the world at that moment.

I rented them from a video store.

Sadly, neither game was very good. Mr. Do! especially had a rushed-out look to it, although the gameplay was good (as was the sound). At the very least, Mr. Do! himself should've been multi-colored, as he was in Parker Bros.' Mr. Do!'s Castle.

Nice one, NE146... I love those Mr. Do! clones. I guess the game was very easy to hack. My favorite is "Yankee Do!" with Uncle Sam and oil barrels!

oh lord.. one was some sort of slide puzzle game and the other was a shooter like river raid only in a cave. I was only 8 at the time. :/

I give the slight edge to Mr. Do!, although Dig Dug ate most of my quarters growing up. But I think that was based more on Dig Dug being more wide spread in the arcades by me.
