Alright. Git off yer dead one an let's git to another place.

What??? do I need to drive out to Javits or something just to have a nice venue? CGE08 in the DP Store this year? Let's see what yer neighbors think of that?! Tents up an down the sidewalk just to house the event! Not too keen on a Xcountry trip but I will do it. Not too keen on paying Tony Soprano fees for "security" either.

About the Riviera,,, not too keen on the daily hike that place represented. Or bazillion dollar mail receipt fees for the packages mailed to the hotel. Nice people in the office servin up evil fees.

If you guys are having problems getting tiem to see other places then let me know. My STeed is just itchin for a reason to ride out to Vegas on a venue huntin trip for the show.

Or is the real reaon for all the waffling becasue John hit the wagon so there's no more Corona desires allowed?

I know it's a long shot but we have a downtown convention center here in Rochester with 3 hotels nearby within less than 10 mins walking time

As a Las Vegas resident myself, I offered my services as a face to face negotiator for the casinos around the place, but I never got a reply.

    Offer is still open however.

I think where he was going with was the fact that CGE had negotiated with the Riveria that they could guarantee a % of occupancy for the expo; however, many people were going through travel agents and online discounters like Orbitz, rather than using the CGE disocunt code when making the reservation, thereby not providing an accurate head count as to the number of reservations based upon attendance at CGE. If I recall, it was not until 30 days out that the website made a plea to book the hotel. At that time it was probably too late as many people had already made non-refundable reservations through other means, rather than using the CGE code.

it doesnt help either if when you call the Riviera to book a room and talk about the CGE discount code, the hotel's receptionist doesnt know what you are talking about.

I had no problem with the Riviera knowing about the discount code. However, I did not get the room upgrades some had mentioned. On the plus side they did put me in the same tower as the John and the banquet like I requested. So the staff was somewhat accomodating.

Rochester is not a major city, and this late in the game, I doubt they can get the keynote speakers all the way out to the other side of the country when most of them live in California.

You have to realise that it was a huge undertaking to even move the stuff to California from Vegas for the two years that it was held in the Bay Area. To pull everything thats in storage in Vegas and load it up to move it back to NY just isn't going to happen. It would take close to a week of driving to move the stuff.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

As much as I'd love to see CGE on the east coast, it's unfortunately not an option for a variety of reasons as I understand it.

I know Rochester is not a major city and it is on the east coast. I was just offering an idea incase there is a possibility to stage a scaled down version of it. There was a game room show in town just last weekend.

    Exclamation Possible Venues

At this late a date, I doubt you'll be able to get the ball rolling for '08, but here's some ideas:

The Gold Coast casino: Home to the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly festival. It's off strip, but they've got a decent hotel, good eats, and adequate ballroom space.

Downtown casinos are pretty inexpensive and underbooked. Check with the Plaza, as they are exceptionally dingy and cheap, yet undeniably Vegas-y. Kinda like the Riviera, but less ritzy. Other options: Fitzgeralds, the Golden Nugget (probably pricey), The Las Vegas Club, The California, Binions (maybe no ballrooms?), and Neonopolis. The latter is a shopping mall with very low occupancy surrounded by food, entertainment and discount lodgings on Fremont St. As a local, I prefer to hit this neighborhood for fun. Also, the Deuce has a stop right next to the mall.

Similarly, the Sahara has convention space and cheap rooms. Might be some opportunity there.

Let me know if I can be of any help!

CGE isn't going to be anywhere but Vegas. Why? It's Las Vegas. If you're inviting guests for keynotes, alumni events, they'd like to do other things while using their vacation time besides just hanging around the hotel for the convention; same goes for many of the attendees.

You'd be marginalizing the the best classic gaming show, if you did it half-assed in any way.

CGE 09 is okay with me, although I was looking forward to 2008. I know it's a ton of work for Joe, John, Sean, and everyone else involved, especially when the cards don't fall into place way before the event.

There's not many cities adults want to spend their limited vacation time to go to for just a video game expo. CGE would also lose much of it's glamor if it were held elsewhere.

Wouldnt it get boring having it in Vegas year after year? Having it in Vegas somewhat IMO would diminish the likelihood of me coming back a 2nd or 3rd time because I would be bored when not at the event IE having it in other west coast cities. The CGE is like the World Series or Super Bowl of gaming events and neither of those are in the SAME city every yr

    No. Next question?

The CGE is like the World Series or Super Bowl of gaming events and neither of those are in the SAME city every yr
No, but sporting events like Wimbleton, the Indy 500, the Tour De France, the Rose Bowl (and all other college Bowl games), the Masters Golf Tourney, the Kentucky Derby, and the Boston Marathon ARE held in the same city every year.

And other conventions like GenCon, Origins, DragonCon, ComicCon take place in the same city each year. Hell, other videogame conventions usually stay put too.

    So what's your point again?

I guess I didnt make this point clear enough. You go to event in said city see what you want to see and do what you want to do but dont get to quite everything so you come back the next yr and see everything. I know Vegas is a poor example because the entertainment changes but if that were not there all there is gambling and that gets boring. Maybe I am OCD but I am the type of person that would rather see something of this nature switch it up every now and then. Or I could it put it this way, There are people like me who loathe vacationing in the SAME city ALL the time
