Default 360 bootup problem, any ideas?

I recently sold a 360 on ebay. I tested it for a couple hours before selling it, and it worked fine the whole time. The guy who bought it, however, is having problems. The first thing he did was update it using Live. Once the update finished the system restarted. The xbox boot screen would then start to play and then go black. Then it would start again, but agian go black. It kept doing this until he manually restarted the system. He didn't say whether that fixed the problem or not. I never had the system connected to live. Is it possible that the update bricked the system somehow, or is this a symptom of another problem? Is it possible he got a virus or something (I'm not familiar with Live)?

It could be a number of reasons, but a virus is not one of them. My guess, (if this was fairly recent) is that the update was a corrupted due to the Live problems. If possible, I would try to go back to the previous setup before the update (can be done in settings), and try to redownload it via Live during a low traffic time.

He just emailed me again, and said that the next time he started it up it worked fine. He said if he starts it up with the "remote" it has works every time. He also said it came on on its own once while he was watching tv... not too sure about that one.

I'll tell him to try rolling it back and re-updating. Thanks for the tip, that makes sense.
