I've spent pretty much the whole day on it and i think it's lovely.
It doesn't really do much new but it looks fantastic and is a very worthwhile purchase if you like the more traditional JRPG's.

I am glad I bought it. It is a very traditional JRPG but it has a few nice features.

I prefer Persona 3, but that is just an opinion (and yes, I own both).

Keep in mind one thing if you are on a budget: Persona 3 may be hard to find down the line, while Blue Dragon may end up in the Platinum Hits line of games, thus readily available at a cheaper price. If your looking for some hard nose monetary advice, and you can only choose one title, I would go with persona 3. I know my local game shop already said they cannot get any more copies of Persona 3, its almost a done deal!

Maybe that helps....if I made your decision harder, I do apologize.

I got Blue Dragon on launch day, and beat it a couple days later. It's a very fun game, and pretty addicting. The story isn't awesome or spectacular, or anything, but it's solid and fun. I also really like the job/class system. Definitely worth getting.

Still playing and only 23 hours into it, that sucks because Eternal is next week.

The demo isn't a very good indicator of the game, but I must admit I did like the demo.

Am I the only one who isn't excited, at all, over Eternal Sonata? There was a demo I didn't like, and the premise just seems strange (not in a good way) to me...

I like the game a lot. The demo was very poorly done and not a good indicator of the game's quality. I am enjoying it quite a bit. Very pretty presentation and cool enemy designs are the best points. The bad points are that it seems a little on the easy side, and the animations in the battles get boring after the hundreth time you've seen them, and there is no way to skip them.

I notice a trend in JRPG design with this game and Eternal Sonata (according to reviews) being pretty short. BD is maybe 30-40 hours and ES apparently is 20-30. I don't think thats the worst thing ever, as I have limited time to play games after my wife goes to bed...but it seems that the long epics may be going away.

Just finished the game. Clocked in at 37 hours. I did some of the optional stuff, but not all of it. I never had to grind at all. I probably only died from a boss in the game maybe once or twice, then figured them out and beat them on my second try. I did die by screwing up some of the mini-game sequences a few times as well.

I like the game, as I said in my previous post. Worth buying, IMO.

Now I get to unwrap the copy of Eternal Sonata I bought wednesday...although I may need a break from JRPGs for a few days. I might have to pick up skate or play through Bioshock again.

You just talked me out of this game. What good is playing an RPG if you don't have to grind or worry about dying?

I believe you can't begin a hard mode until you've beaten (or nearly beaten) the game on the normal mode. At least on the Asian version you can't.

I liked the game, but it sure was seriously easy.

I own Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, and Persona 3 and out of the three I think I'm enjoying Eternal Sonata the best. Blue Dragon is a very good game, but I've put it down in favor of trying to complete Eternal Sonata. I think Blue Dragon has more depth, but ES is more fun to play IMO.

I too have all three, but haven't played any of them yet, due to lack of time, but between blue dragon and Eternal Sonata, which would you say has the better plot/story line?
To be this good takes AGES

To be this great takes SEGA!!

I think you can start off with Hard mode, even on your first playthrough. Impossible requires a lvl 50+ file, though.

    Any concrete evidence on this?

I can't say personally (I beat it before the download came out), but what people are saying on other boards seems to indicate this.

Huh, I wonder if Impossible is the Asian Hard mode -- we only have one hard mode, not 2. I downloaded mine soon after getting the game, but it didn't show up as an option until I was on the 3rd disc -- which sounds like the US Impossible mode.

Interesting -- I would have played a harder mode at the beginning had it been offered, but on the third disc I wasn't restarting.

Impossible only shows up after you reach level 50. I've seen people saying they've restarted on regular hard mode after only playing Normal for only two hours, so the US patch should allow you to start out on hard from the get go.

I personally like the story line to ES better. I like how they merge fiction and non/fiction to create the plot. I haven't seen many stories that takes place inside of a composer's dream while he is on his death bed. Blue Dragon's story isn't bad, but its nothing too new as far as RPGs go. BD definately gets the job done for me though.

I thought Blue Dragon was made by a lot of the same people who worked on Chrono Trigger, so in my mind I was hoping for something that could compare. I haven't played Blue Dragon, but it seems that my hopes are dashed.

The big names used to promote the game were:

Hironobu Sakaguchi (originator of Final Fantasy and former Prez of Square)
Akira Toriyama (mangaka who wrote Dragonball and Dr. Slump, also designed characters for Chrono Trigger)
Nobuo Uematsu (composer for all Final Fantasy games, but not Chrono Trigger)

So yes, between Toriyama's designs and the 2 most recognizable names at Squaresoft, most people drew comparisons to Chrono Trigger. It's good, but not Chrono Trigger good.

Just started playing this game. At first I was mixed. There are too many cut scenes for my taste. They are fantastic, but I think the 16 hours I have into it has about 2 hrs of cuts already. The graphics are great. I love them.

The Story is iffy so far I think. Standard town into shambles, kid rises to the challenege. Not new but interesting I suppose with the technology and magic mixed. I'm curious to see how it ends up in the end, so I wont put it down for DQ Swords yet or Metroid Prime 3 that I just got.

One thing that is good is the sound track. I love the rock song for boss battles. Intense!
