From what I heard it was just that the widescreen version was a cropped 4:3 image. That is, they just cropped off the top/bottom of the 4:3 picture (whereas normally they would cut off the sides of a 16:9 picture to fit a 4:3). I don't think this is anything you would normally notice unless you played the game a fair bit on a 4:3 TV or saw all the pictures on the internet. Now I'm not actually playing on a 16:9, so I can't say for positive, but I seriously doubt the widescreen version feels so cramped that you'd be able to tell without hearing about it first (judging by screenshot comparisons).
