NES Lore: Bionic Commando
In a world, where a kid had an NES and a sister who worked in a video store where he could rent video games, a new wind in the realm of action games was about to blow...
OK, here we go, Bionic Commando, another brilliant platform shooter from the geniuses over at Capcom. This is gonna be great, I'm sure it will be like Mega Man with a grittier, military theme, awesome. I pop the game into my NES toaster oven, grab my trusty rectangle and prepare myself for some action.
All right, I've got my mission, I'm ready to go find Super Joe. The chopper drops me in Area 1 and I'm parachuting in. Typical Capcom fare for the music, still gets me pumped though. Run, shoot, so far so good, now I gotta ju-huh? Jump, jump, JUMP YOU GREEN-SPIKY-HAIRED-MONKEY-WITH-AN-OVERSIZED-GUN!!!! The jump button doesn't work, all it does is shoot this stupid claw up in the air! What am I supposed to do with that? I need to move upward at some point, but there are no ladders in sight!
Cue lightbulb over head.
Oh wait, this claw, it grabs onto stuff, I can grab ledges, light posts, girders, barrels, just about anything. There's a bit of a learning curve, but with a little determination I get proficient pretty quickly. I can even knock back enemies with it (I laugh maniacally as I knock them off ledges). Now I'm swinging around like Tarzan from building to building, lightpost to lightpost, getting the drop on my enemies and taking them out before they realize I'm there, suckers. Before I know it, I'm taking out the cores and getting all sorts of cool new weapons and items to use. Hm, do I do the wiretap and risk getting attacked?
A few hours of play shows me that the claw makes the idea of jump useless here, and in fact the game simply would not be as enjoyable if not for the claw. I don't think I could reach such heights so quickly if all I could do is jump. There are many other points of this game I could gush about, like the weapons, the music, the cool storyline, but this game play feature alone made Bionic Commando a great game in my eyes. The game at its core is good, the claw makes it great.
The moral of the story is, keep an open mind when it comes to new control schemes, you might have fun!

I agree with keeping an open mind.
The first time I played Bionic Commando I didn't like it because of some of the things you mentioned. I put it away and haven't got back to playing it. I keep meaning to pull it back out because it doesn't seem like a bad game - it is just different than I am used to.
