No matter how bad a game is SOMEONE out there likes it.
And that someone is each and everyone of us.
We all dig games that no one else can seem to go for.

Share some here

Myself;

F-16 Fighter (sega master system)
I admit that it's a tad slow ('tad' being an understatement), and that it does have other flaws too. BUT it IS a fun game to me. I play it very often. And it has this strange quirk where sometimes you slip in the card, start playing and your downing jets like you're playing After Burner. Some other times you play it and you can't down one stinkin jet.
This COULD have been a DANDY game if they had just released it on a CART instead of a CARD. A flight simulator of all things should NOT be crammed into 32k when they had 128k and 256k carts. I'm not sure if the 512k carts were around when F-16 was released...

Shadow Of The Beast II (sega genesis)
Once again, admit it's one main flaw, no way to save despite such easy ways to die. But games like these are my bread & butter. I always used to question games like Mario with stuff like; why couldn't that castle have been locked and mario would have to backtrack thru the level and kill the koopa with the key. Just simple 'puzzles' that always seem to infect even normal everyday stuff we do in life.
Plus it's dark dismal graphics and gameplay. Gotta love that (seriously).

Sword Quest: EarthWorld/FireWorld (Atari 2600)
Well... this game kinda shouldn't be here. I always DID like it, cause once again it was a puzzle game. I loved running around rooms picking up items, leaving items, learning what items helped you out here and there, trying to mimic the comic book. But then one day I learned that EW and FW had NO rhyme or reason to how they were beaten. there was NO way "knowing" what to put where. and I realized that tho I had fun back in the day playing it, I hadn't a snowballs chance in hell of actually winning it. whereas WaterWorld actually gave clues and you COULD figure it out with ingenuity, and I did (emulated anyway)... heh, the only SQ title that was playable was barely released... c'est la vie.

Amidar (VCS)

Slated by DP, I really love this game. It plays very slow, but after a while you get used to it and compensate. Wonderful humour, that's what I love in games, and Amidar has this (A Paintbrush chased by pigs?). Excellent game for me, I still play this nowadays.

Street Fighter: The Movie (Saturn/PSX)

I played this game to the end, only to see Cammy's ending message, but I am a Kylie Minogue fan, so you all have to forgive me!!!

Portal (C-64)

A game where you cannot die, I actually 'read' this all the way through. Masterpiece.

Street Fighter: The Movie (Saturn/PSX)

I always wanted to play this game. SF2 and MK were like Pepsi & Coke and Sega & Nintendo back in the day, and here SF: The Movie was basically the hybrid of the two.

Sorcerer by Mythicon for the Atari 2600. I have *no* idea why I love this repetitive, ugly game. My iwfe assumes that I'm hypnotized by the repeating trilling little theme.

Ehrgeiz (PSX): A lot of people trash this, especially when comparing it to Tobal 1 and 2, but I really enjoy it. Maybe it's the free-roaming fights or the way the fighting engine lets you play it either fast and loose or slow and complicated. Or maybe it's just the guest stars from Final Fantasy VII.

Illusion of Gaia (SNES): Though many see Gaia as weaker than Actraiser and SoulBlazer, I almost think it's better. The haunting atmosphere is a great switch from medieval-themed action/RPGs, and the game's emphasis on combat keeps things interesting.

BloodStorm (Arcade): I have no idea why I enjoy this one, and it's really as violent and repulsive as everyone claims. I guess I just like finding the hidden characters. Ratchet still eludes me.

Edit:
One . . . er, two more . . .

Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom (NES): Yeah, it's the worst of the series, but it's still an amazing, wonderfully difficult action/platformer.

WURM: Journey to the Center of the Earth (NES): The DP Guide describes it as "one of the greatest disappointments on the NES" (or something like that), yet I can't help but love the story, which recalls goofy 1950s sci-fi pulp, and the multiple modes of play.

Starcraft 64--I bought this before I had a PC. When I got a PC I use to visit the usenet Starcraft groups for strategy. I don't think I ever seen one positive comment about the N64 version on there. I think its one of the best and most ambitious games on the system. Its a great deal, you get all the Broodwar missions extra on the Cart. I've still never played the PC version of SC, but the N64 Must be fairly faithfull because all the strategies that I picked up from discussions on the PC version all worked on my N64 version.

California Speed(N64)--I'm done with the game now, but for the 2 weeks that I played it I had a blast. This game gets dissed for being boring, and it does get boring once you've accomplished everything, but while your working on finishing all the races and series' its a good racing game. Nice Arcade feel to it.

Human Cannonball 2600--Its amazing how much fun you can have with a game when its one of 3 games you own, and your a little kid.

A little note aout F-16 on the SMS, this game was actually programmed for one of Sega's earlier Japanese consoles, Sega just re-released it for the Master System, which explains the crapiness of the graphics.

Anyway, I've seen lots of Horrible reviews for Sky Kid, (mostly by hardcore shooter fans) But i think it's great. Sure, it's no match for say R-Type as a shooter, but it's not really meant to be a SHMUP, it's just a wacky fun game.

Granstream Saga (PSX): God I loved that game! Bought it, sat down, played it through in like 2 days, and had a blast! I don't know why people are down on it.

Shadowman for DC or N64: Better than the PC one cause of better controls. Stupid PC one doesn't have customizable controls, the fools! I like it though, cause I'm big on the comic.

Shufflepuck Cafe (Aminga): Damn that game...simple but SOOOOOOO addictive! Wish it had come out for a console..I miss it.

Blue Stinger (DC): I like it. No one else does, but I do damn it!

Carrier (DC): Same as Blue Stinger

Illbleed (DC): Also same as Blue Stinger

Destructor (Colecovision): I don't know why everyone hates this game. It was so freaky and I thought decent use of the driving controller. I hated Turbo and all the straight-up racing games, so this was neat, scary twist IMHO.

Super Mario Bros 2(NES): Recently covered in the Game of the Day...

One Piece Mansion (PSX): I loved this game.. the cute animations, the simple gameplay yet addictiveness too. I thought it was very old school. The only problem was that it was a little too easy from the start. After playing it forever, the difficulty finally ramped up. But, a great find from Capcom. It got killed by the critics though...

And others which I can't recall right now.

Saga Frontier. I have no idea why. It's a terrible game, but I've played it many many times and I love it anyway.

COme to think of it, I'm also quite fond of Illusion of Gaia and Granstream Saga, even though the latter frightened me a little with its SCARY FACELESS PEOPLE OF DEATH.

Night Trap - 3DO/Sega CD

I absolutely LOVED Banjo Kazooie. And yes I know a lot of people do, but there are just as many who don't care for or outright trash the game.. unbelievable :hmm: :P

Interesting.. Well, count me in as a naysayer. All that humor was present in the original arcade game of course, but the thing that killed it (as you mentioned) is definitely the slowness. I'll give it another shot though based on your endorsement :)

How about Panic! on the Sega CD? It was one of those games that came and went, but I think it's just bloody brilliant and funny as hell. If you ever get a chance to see it, by all means do so.

And, oh, I loved Power Stone, too. The second game plays different, somehow. It's more of a party game than a straight-up fighter.

I second the previous mentioning of Amagon. I've never really understood why the game has a reputation as being so terrible among NES fans. I actually loved the game as a kid. It seems I liked any game with shapeshifting ala Altered Beast elements.

I'm also a fan of the later Alex Kidd games many people think are terrible compared to Miracle World. Enchanted Castle always gets described as being a poor remix of the original, but I've never understood where the "poor" part of the description from.

I like to play (and then ridicule) cheesy fighting games. I don't know what it is... their crappiness is an endless source of entertainment for me. I just tried Ta-o Taido recently and was amazed at how ridiculous and silly it was... and not in a good way, like Pocket Fighter.
On a more closely related note, I always thought that the Genesis version of Fatal Fury was the next best thing to playing it at an arcade, but everyone else (particularly the drooling schlubs at EGM) felt differently. Let 'em think what they want, because for my money that game was far superior to the stinky, load-time filled Super NES game.

Ka Ge Ki: Fists of Steel for the Genesis was always fun game for me. As long as I was able to punch endless amounts of goons in the face, I was a happy camper. Nothing satisfied like landing a right jab on a tender jaw bone! After beating the last boss, I was rewarded with the best session of ass-grabbing ever put on a video game.

Guess I should throw in my two cents: Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom (NES). You really don't get much better than this game. It's charming as hell, the soundtrack is great, the characters are memorable, the puzzles are tough but fair (except for the last maze)...a true classic.

I-War (Jaguar)- blah graphics but what's it SUPPOSED to look like inside a computer?

Kasumi Ninja (Jag)- hilarious special moves/fatalities (a buddy almost wet his pants at Angus MCGreggor's fireball!)

Fox Sports Golf 99 (PSX)- 6 courses, or build your own from existing holes!

NINJA: SoD (PSX)- I don't see ANYTHING wrong w/ it- decent graphics, lengthy, easy controls, challenging but not impossible.

Oh, & the $10 PSX games from Agetec, Take2, etc. are some of the best I own! DarkStone, SW Sportfishing, Putter Golf, R/C Helicopter, Dracula: Res/Last Sanc, Martian Gothic, all good...

I second One Peice Mansion, it got panned, but it was so good. And the style od the game was very cool to look at.

Monster Rancher- No one seems to like these games. They are fun, well designed, amazinglly deep games. But for some reason no one likes them. I keep telling people to go try them and all i get it "no, i don't like that pok-a-mon shit"

ITS NOT POKEMON >:( >:( >:( >:( !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If any of you want a game that will engross you for hours, go get Monster Rancher 3. Fairly cheap now and a great game.

My favorite game for the PS2, which a lot of people bash is Gitaroo-Man. The game is very unique (maybe why some people don't like it?) and is a great challenge. The best part of the game is it's soundtrack. Just killer all the way through. For people who haven't played it and bash it...try it for yourself (you just might like it!). And for people who have played it and say it sucked...get over yourself. A lot of people deserve to have their mouths kept shut.

I'll have to jump on the Granstream Saga bandwagon here, as I LOVED this game. I rocked at the quirky battle engine too.

And, pardon me for being naive here, but I thought the general consensous was that Power Stone 1 was MUCH better than 2. Huh....

NES - Zelda 2, OK so I liked it. So what.

Oh man! I loved Zelda 2! I thought it was very unique, challenging, slick play control in the side-scrolling scenes, ...Just great. I liked the combination of RPG (the overhead "world map") combined with side-scrolling action. Finding the hidden town--I was SO excited! And the last castle--that was super tough, but super cool. The only time I've ever had to draw a map. I love it. 'Course, after all the hype, and delays (chip shortage? Was this for real?), etc., I still think it holds up. I'm actually surprised to learn that so many people didn't like it.

Genesis: Chakan, Alien 3, Eternal Champions (duh!)

All of my friends aren't really into the console gaming and such. So there is a broad range. My friends really got on my case about all of the NES games i have. One of my friends is estatic about my purchase. The game that thy really don't like me playing is Battletoads on NES. They can say what they want about Punch Out or The Legend of Zelda. But Battletoads was my CHILDHOOD man my CHILDHOOD

i just finished black label's version of lord of the rings, i had heard the early buzz on this game was pretty bad but i had also watched a making of documentary that made me really want to try out the game. so when i was in EBX and saw the game used for $9 i figured it was worth the gamble. i played thru it a little too quickly but enjoyed the feel of it a lot. not an amazing game but really enjoyable for the casual gamer in me.

then i read 5 or so reviews of it online...wow! people really hate this game.

* Resident Evil: Survivor - Don't know why folks hate this, but I play it completely through once every few months.

I LOVED Sky Kid and Renegade for NES. And Rolling Thunder, too.

Jerry Glanville's Pigskin Footbrawl for Genesis. I'm sorry, but the screaming sound effects on this are funnier than hell.

Super Sprint on Arcade Party Pak (PS1). None of my friends get why I like it. Come to think of it, I don't why either.

I still enjoy playing the first Smackdown on PS1, too. Especially Season, because you can just skip quickly through matches you're not involved in.

Since this thread's been revived, I wanted to add Fighter's Desitny for N^$ to my list. For my money, this is the only N64 fighting game worth anything. It got trashed all over the place, but you have to realize, the controls aren't sluggish, simply different. Once I got used to everything and spent some time practicing, I found it to be an extremely enjoyable departure from the traditional fighting game. The counter system is easy to learn, hard to master. I also liked the strategy element. Do I go for the easy one point ringout, or go for broke and try for a four point knockout? Unfortunately, I've never met anyone else who even remotely liked this game, so I've never had a good challenge at it.

I've got loads really, but some are:

PO'ed - 3DO.

I really enjoyed this. I thought it done a great job of immersing you into a really alien world.....everything was weird but sort of made sense...great feeling of space too. I think pretty much everyone dumped on this game except for the UK 3DO mag.

Rapid reload/Gunners heaven - Playstation.

A UK launch title, and I love it. 2D and heavily influenced by Gunstar Heroes, it plays really nicely, the controls are great and its just a fun 2D shooty platformy thing. Slated over here for nor utilising the full power of the PS!!!???

TD Overdrive - XBox

Everything I've heard says its naff...and I just enjoy playing it...more than GT3, more than gotham!!!

Hello everyone, this is my first post on these forums. :D

Anyways, I also like to play Final Fantasy 8. I don't understand what is so wrong with this game. I have heard complaints about the junctioning system, but it is not that bad in my opinion. (But then again, maybe I think that it is not that bad because FF8 was the first RPG I ever played.)

I am completely transfixed by Gravitar (Arcade) which gets a lot of play time in my MAME cabinet. Gravitar gets a lot of grief for its difficult gameplay, and I agree it's not easy. But it is one of the best vector games ever and worth the time to master. Playing Gravitar is like drinking stout beer; you do it in order to prove that you can do it.

Oh, and despite the crude graphics, the 2600 version of Gravitar is fun, too. Anybody wanna toss a spare silver label cart my way? LOL

Cobra Command 'Laserdisc' (Arcade) I think this is one of the better laserdisc games that was made in 1984. Real hard, real challenging and real fun. Its a all around great game. In Cobra Command, you command a fully armed helicopter and must take on enemy helicopters, planes, tanks, and ships in order to destroy their stronghold on an area. *Your missions take you though the forest, in the canyons, through the desert ruins, out to the pacific ocean, and right though good ole' New York City.

Badlands 'Laserdisc' (Arcade) The controls for Badlands were unique.* All you had was one big red fire button.* You had to wait until the timing was right and then fire off a few rounds into the bad guy. Almost to the exact frame which made this game very frustrating, but also very fun. A lot people think this game is a stinker but I played this game a lot when I was a kid in 1984. The funny pic you see on the right is from Badlands

Power Stone (dc) - sorry, but it's MUCH better than power stone 2

Pit Fighter (Genesis) - A lot of people hate this game, but I think it was ahead of its time with the ability to team up in a fighting game, use of weapons, interactive crowd, powerups, etc.

NARC (arcade) - the NES version is a pile of poo, the the arcade version is ultraviolence at its best.

Forgotten Worlds (arcade/Genesis) - seems to have gotten lost in a sea of Rambo/Contra shooter clones, and it's a shame cause this is one of the most unique shooters ever.

Kool-Aid Man (Atari 2600) You improve the game by saying "Oh YEAHHHH" in a deep voice before each round.

Samba De Amiga (Dreamcast) Only people without the maracas dis this game, the rest know better.

Moonwalker (Genesis) You're Michael Jackson, you go around and touch children, and they immediately run away screaming your name. What's not to love?

Gunman Chronicles (PC)

An extremely excellent use of the Half-Life engine. The game pushes the graphics past even what Valve accomplished. It never gets boring and has a fantastic weapon system. I miss you, ReWolf.

Omega Boost (PSX)

Here's what Zone Of The Enders ripped it's gameplay off of. The best graphics I've seen in a PS1 title, and one of the best shooters ever, period.

Fallout Tactics (PC)

Easily the best, deepest, and most involving squad-based-tactical-strategy game I've ever experienced. An absolute masterpiece (aside from the, um, bugs) that zines ripped to shreds... or didn't even mention. My favorite strategy game ever, right up there with Battlezone.

For NES:

-Friday the 13th, and

I don't know why, but I enjoy playing these two games. I go back to them at least a couple times a year. And I have seen both on NES 'worst of' lists many times.

[NES] Baseball...the original. I probably am fond of this because it was one of 4 games I originally owned for the NES until I finally got a new game months later. I played the hell out of this.

[NES] Orb 3D...I have NEVER heard a good word said about this game. I don't find it to be a great game by any means, but it is just interesting enough to keep you playing longer than you have any right to want to.

[SMS] Miracle Warriors...I love the fact that when you get to the final boss you can "unload" all of your items that do minor damage one right after another without taking up a turn. I remember borrowing this from a friend who could not finish it and I played it non-stop until I finally beat it. I seem to remember Gamepro publishing a few hints for this game and one of them was incorrect or something...that was a long time ago.

Wow. Thanks, DP. :D

I have one to share: Shinobi on the PS2. I think it's a dang good game, but it often gets bashed for its heavily linear gameplay and berzerk challenge. But it is Shinobi, so I get some charm out of it. I don't play it as often as I do with my other PS2 games, but it is good, and I guarantee that you will obliterate something in the rage induced by the final boss. ;)

Rygar (PS2): Man I loved this frikkin game, the old school side scroller element was totally there despite sometimes annoying camera controls, the bosses ruled. The only thing i craved was more Diskarmor! MORE!

FF8: (PS) Only one I gave a shit about and the only PSOne game I've ever bought. I never owned the Ps1, so I got this game after I got my PS2 and played it on that. Yum, the stories... the art... the lack of annoying squat big eyed big haired cartoon characters, the cool Guardian Force animations. This game was the best of the series and be damned any who says different.

Adventure Construction Set (PC Dos): Wow. All I can say is Wow about this game, If I had a copy that worked I'd still be playing random missions and crafting my own RPGs with this thing. Best damn thing EA ever put out, ever. I dunno if it has critical acclaim, but I loved it so hard it hurt.

Ultima Underworld: (PC) Man, this game ROCKED! gone were the clunky sprites of yesteryear (good for the day, but getting tired by this point Origin) totally new story line, innovative UI, great self contained game. Hated almost universally by Ultima fans. I say more UU fun for me.

Only 2 games come to mind straight away (although I am sure more will pop up)

Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion (N64)

I really can't understand the bashing this game received. I think it is the best in the Turok series for its tighter story line and grittier feel. The graphics may not have been as good as Seeds of Evil but we didn't get the slideshow framerates in parts either.

Body Harvest (N64)

This may not have exactly been dumped on but did not get the recognition it deserved. Such an expansive, epic, monstrous game! Most gamers probably can't get over the first generation N64 graphics and the sluggish controls but this game still routinely make me its bitch (and probably will for a while to come) with its awesome blend of Hunter (Amiga) and Defender style action.[/b]

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. This game got ripped on alot, especially by people who love the Final Fantasy series. I for one love the Final Fantasy series, but if it wasn't for Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, I wouldn't have known what Final Fantasy was until it became a mainstream game series when Final Fantasy VII came out. And what's not to love about this game? It has some of the best music I've ever heard on any RPG to date and it's just plain fun. I think people bash it because it's not as big of an epic as games like Final Fantasy VI,VII,VIII,IX, or X.

Mappy -NES/Famicom I love this bizarre and unique Namco classic...nothing like it really...yet no one I know has heard of it.

Gauntlet Dark Legacy (Arcade or Console) I love this game....but no one ever wants to join in...

Ghosts N Goblins series (Alot of people whine about how hard all three were, but I stand my grounds and claim that it was all about timing and effort to each level)

Hexen (N64, PC, and PSX) the last game to ever use the original DOOM engine. Many didn't bother, many hated it. I played it to death, I will say there are too many puzzles and alot of errons to do while trying to complete the game successfully without cheating.

Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis and Saturn) I really enjoyed this game, "Traveler's Tales" did a decent job, but since it wasn't a "true" Sonic title, many kicked it aside, yet I loved it.

Three Dirty Dwarves (Saturn) Awesome little brawler, I wish there was something that closely resembles a game like this now. Yet I cannot find anyone who can remember this title.

I love many games that are hated:

Breath of fire 2 (GBA/SNES)- Easily the best game in the series, and one of the best RPG's ever. The only problem is the horrendous translation.

Mega man Battle Chip Challenge (GBA)- This game got some of the worst reviews I've ever seen, but I loved it! It's a unique little strategy game.

Robopon 2 (GBA)- Just another Pokemon clone? HELL NO! It's the best monster-raising RPG ever, and it's the only game that ever inspired me to write a guide (which I gotta finish someday)

Gotcha Force (GCN)- Insanely fun robot combat game, with around 300 playable character, most of which play differently.

Mega Man Network Transmission (GCN)- One of my favorite mega man games ever. I guess it was just too hard for some people.

Gitaroo man (PS2)- Best. Music. game. ever.

The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Many seem to hate this one because of its high level of challenge (I actually beat it without continuing). A nice blend of three genres (brawler, light gun, and driving) and has some nice music. Plus, the commercial was hilarious.

Other noteworthy underdogs:
Mighty Bombjack
Rival Turf (box art cracks me up)
Robotrek

Most people I've talked to dislike or don't care at all for Street Fighter 2010 on the NES. Yet, it's one of my all-time favourite games. This game is a blast when you get a hold of the controls (and use an NES Advantage joystick).

Even though it has received poor reviews when it was released, I played Shadowgate 64 and enjoyed every minute of it (however, a walktrough is necessary - probably one of the reasons it's regarded as an average game).

Amazingly difficult, but combines shooter levels, platformer levels, and top-down exploration levels. Beating this game someday is one of my life's goals.:D

No One Can Stop Mr. Domino (PSX)
I dunno why, but I love this one. It's this sublime combination of quirky Japanese charm, irritatingly catchy music, unique gameplay, and fast-paced action combined with the fact that it's one of those beat-in-one-sitting games.

Bonanza Brothers (Genesis)
Even on this very site this game has been panned. I find it to be intelligent in a way most action games aren't, though this action may be a bit slower than most. The original arcade version is better, but I probably have no hope of finding a copy of that, much less a place to put it...

Sonic Spinball – I can play this for hours on my Genesis. Love the music and gameplay. Bought Sega Smashpack for my GB SP just so I could play this game on the go. Hell, I sought out and bought the Sonic the Hedgehog Boom music CD just so I could listen to the music in the car. Yup, safe to say me-likey.

Resident Evil: Survivor – A Resident Evil first-person game? I’m there dude. Or, what I like to call my “Dawn of the Dead” game. Very atmospheric. Loved it and I still love it.

Quest 64. Maybe it's childhood nostalgia mixed with a fuzzy memory, but I really remember digging this game. Apparently critics thought otherwise. If I ever find this game...

Battle Hunter (PSX): A lot of people said that this was just a barebones strategy title hiding behind a budget label. I, for one, find it strangely fun and addicting.

Fantavision (PS2): "You blow up fireworks! How is that fun?" It is. Right down to the wacky obviously-Japanese-inspired cutscenes.

Lord Of The Sword (SMS): Featured on one of Seanbaby's Classic Crap articles in EGM, this little gem is often overlooked. Sure, it might be a lot of backtracking and repetitiveness, but once you get into it, it's actually a lot of fun.

Pocket Fighter got slammed on Gamespot on one or two occasions. I think they, or at least Jeff Gerstmann, who reviewed the game, took themselves too seriously with that one, since it was a fun and unique spin on not only the SF series, but the genre as a whole. I find myself more inclined to play it than the IMO overrated, overcooked Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Partially speaking of which...

Zelda II: the Adventure of Link had some brilliant play mechanics and play balance.

I used to play it on story mode, and right before bison had 1 hit left to beat the game, I would get high as a kite. I unlock the closet; place and climb the latter. I move the pillows out from in front of the safe. I turn the dial on the safe untill the combo is entered. Open the safe. Push the pappers aside reach into that back of the safe... (By now everyone has gathered to watch and is expecting me to pull out a magic artifact of some sort:) I remove my complete Quest of the Rings set, open it so they can see. As I setup the peices and connect the Odyssey2 to the TV I tell them about wizards, warriors, changlings, phantoms. Orcs, deathwings, spydroths, rings and the dreaded dragon. One of them asks "So is it a computer game or a boardgame?". Not know exactly how to answer I say "Both", then suddenly they all hate me. I don't get it. Oh well. the game is better off without the fingerprints anyway.

Oh god yes. And the much-reviled Freedom Fighters! Whenever anyone disses this, the gist of the whine is always, "Waaah, it's not Defender!" Damn straight. It's more fun than Defender. And an easier control set to boot, with your standard O2 control weirdness.

Okay.....here's a weird one for you.

I loved Aidyn Chronicles (that reeeeeeealy sloooow RPG) for the N64. I think that I'm one of the VERY few who completed it...lol.

I'm intending on playing Quest 64 this winter as well. That's another game that most rag on.

Here's a game I enjoyed that more than a few people panned: :P

Snake's Revenge (NES)

Blah blah blah "it doesn't fit in Kojima's original storyline (and MGS2 did? :P)" blah blah blah "it was too much action" blah blah blah BLAH!

I'll agree the side scrolling parts didn't fit well, but I for one did enjoy the story line (I didn't expect to get stabbed in the back by your own man), there were a few puzzles that did actually make you think (like hiding at the bottom of the screen to get into the complex at the beginning), and I really enjoyed the end theme/music enough to consider it one of the better midi's ever heard on the NES.

I'm sure for a designer there's nothing worse than having YOUR series get "bastardized" by another group within your own company and not having any input in it yourself, but I think too many hopped on the hater bandwagon for this one out of a little too much Kojima-worship. Sure it had flaws and probably could have been better if he had assisted in its development, but it certainly wasn't any CastleQuest (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/review/7600.html). Far, far from it. =)

Later.

I enjoy both Front Mission 3 and now Im currently playing through Front Mission 4 on PS2.
suer the story is a little slow and they did go slightly overboard with all the menus in part 4 but I love seeing the Mechs fight it out even if I do have to play the simulation mode a thousand times just to get to the next level

I loved Phantasy Star 3.

Sure it didn't quite have the magic feel of the first two, but it was a solid RPG that had two really distinctive unique characteristics.

1) The magic system. 4 "circles" of magic (actually squares) with 4 spells in each. Essentially you got X points to divide between the four spells that determined how powerful they were (or how likely they were to work for a single-effect spell). It had a neat little GUI piece with this square and 4 different shapes/colors to represent the spells... hard to explain without seeing it.

2) The generations. Beat the first 1/3rd of the game. Decide who you will marry, the magic user or the meleer. Your son's abilities are based on that, and where you go up changes, so the plot does as well. Beat the second 1/3rd of the game. Decide again who you will marry, the magic user or the meleer. Again your son's abilities are dependent and the plot changes. Very neat and creative, and great for replay. So far I've done pure melee and pure magic. I've heard the other two combinations are much more difficult since you don't get really good at one thing.

No matter how bad a game is SOMEONE out there likes it.
And that someone is each and everyone of us.
We all dig games that no one else can seem to go for.

Share some here

Myself;

Isn't this the game that required you to use both controllers at the same time? I seem to remember that this game gave me fits for some reason.

As for my favorite "dissed" game. BC RACERS. This is a kart racer by Core Design. Every review that I have read has been negative. So far I only have the 32X version. I'm still looking for the Sega CD and 3DO versions. Someone recently posted that, believe it or not, the Sega CD version is the best visually.

Here are some more games I wanted to add (the edit button is out for the count again, so I have to make a new post).

UFO for the Odyssey2 - not sure why so many people have a problem with this game. I have no issues at all with the aiming mechanism of UFO. I have always like the game, and always will (heck, I played it earlier today). Yes, the aiming this is not what you'd call normal, but I can easily deal with it. Others....

Space Invaders for the GameBoy Advance - Ever collector I've talked with always has to tell me how much greater the Japanese version is. Well, guess what, I don't care. I like the game the way it is, and it is a blast to play. So there... :P

Almost every game that I like for the Arcadia 2001 - so many people poke fun of this system. I like it, probably because I almost always go with the underdog of systems. Sure, not all the games are great, but there are some rather good ones for the Arcadia.

Cybermorph for the Atari Jaguar - many, many people rip on this game. I really can't figure that out. I've played this game many times, and always find it to be a rather enjoyable experience - even if the graphics are not top notch.

Alien Invaders+ for the Odyssey2 - I actually like this game. No, I don't like it as much as Space Invaders, but it is a good game in its own way. I don't really compare it to SI, since Alien Invaders is really its own thing. It may seem simple, but getting through all ten levels is a real challenge.

Kabuki Warriors: Xbox.

Divine Sealing (MD)
An unlicenced hentai shmup. Nothing amazing, a bit bland, but still not a bad game. Even without hentai it would be entertaining enough for me. I love it.

The Ooze (GEN/MD)
One of the most unique and funniest games I have ever played. I love its nice B-movie feel and extremely banal plot.

Phantasy Star 3 (GEN/MD)
I failed to see what's wrong with this one. A nice RPG with some nice ideas (generations, magic system). Maybe the worst of the series, but still good.

Castlevania II Simon's Quest for the NES is one of my favorites of the series. I'd rank it up there right next to SOTN. I thought the puzzle element as well as the night and day themes were great. Not to mention the soundtrack is awesome.

Agreed. This is one of my favorite Castlevanias. It's not universally hated or anything but it is generally regarded as one of the weaker entries in the series. And I thought it was at least on par with,or in some cases better than the other Castlevanias.

I'd also like to mention Keith Courage, China Warrior and Victory run. Some turbo games that a lot of people hate. I wouldn't say any of them are excellent or the best games on the system, but I can say i've had fun with all of them.

Someone else mentioned Saga Frontier. I am a bit biased about this game considering it was my first rpg. The psx was certainly not my first system. I had a sms, nes, snes and genesis before it but my mom would never buy me rpg's for those as they were pretty expensive. By the time Saga Frontier rolled around I had my own cash. I played almost nothing but this game for an entire summer. I loved all the exploration,non-linearity(is that a word?) and the fact that you could play a different game with so many characters. I have played a lot of better rpgs since but I still enjoy Saga Frontier.

Mischief Makers on N64. All of my friends hate it, but I think it's a very enjoyable sidescroller with some pretty impressive 2D graphics.

I like the Cruis'n games (USA, World, Exotica) on the N64...everyone seems to hate those.

I also enjoyed Batman Forever: The Arcade Game (waits for people to throw rotten fruit) on the Playstation and Saturn. Eveyone hates that game to death because of the heavy pixelated characters, insane button mashing, and just about any other reason...but I liked it. I guess it's because I've always been a big fan of sidescrolling beat-em-ups, and I enjoyed doing all those insane combos and taking out row after row of thugs.

Can't figure out why so many people seem to hate this game. It rocks!! It's one of my all time favorite top ten games - period! :D
I could play this thing for hours and hours.
I'll second that. It's actually the game I played the longest without ever stopping.

I ended up at end of an afternoon with a huge score not knowing how to pause, I had to go to the bathroom and never played the game since.

Let me be the fourth so far in this thread to mention Super Mario Bros. 2, which I find to be one of the very best games for the NES.

The second to back up Sub-Zero Mythologies for the N64, a nice little M-rated adventure with my favourite Mortal Kombat character.

And possibly the first for N64's Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire. Decent graphics, controls with a mix of on foot and flying adventure with a badass character in a Star Wars setting.

One Piece: Grand Battle. I think it's funny when people import anime games and say they're awesome then buy the English versions and dismiss them as trash. I hate bad dubbing, and anime in general, but it shouldn't bother people that much.

Of all the PowerStone rip-offs, this is one of the best.

This game has some really awesome special moves. Luffy freaking punches a guy through two pillars, then stretches his arm out and slams the guy into the floor, making a huge crater! Then, as the poor sucker bounces off the ground from the impact, Luffy stretches his leg out and kicks him into the sky. Then he sucks in a boatload of air, exhales and launches himself airborne, and throws a barrage of punches at the guy, breaking the ceiling of the arena and sending the guy into space!

Absurd, but awesome.

The Fighters History series.
This fighting game produced by Data East known for many people as " Street Fighter II Rip Off ".

Okay, more attacks of character this game ressembles the attacks the characters form Street Fighter, but this game had your merits:

- Weak Points: I never seem weak points in other fighting games. Only in Fighters History.

- Karnovs presence: The Russian fighter had a game with his name avaliale for Arcade and NES
and makes a guest starring in the Dragon Ninja ( Arcade and NES ) as the boss in the 1st stage of this game.
and a cameo in the Street Hoops for Neo Geo.
Karnov is the final boss in the Fighters History and Fighters History Dynamite ( AKA Karnovs Revenge ).

- Chelnovs presence: The Karnovs compatriot is the main character of Atomic Runner ( AKA Chelnov ) avaliale for Arcade and Mega Drive / Genesis.
Chelnov is the final boss in Fighters History: Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu for Super NES, released in Japan only.

List of Fighters History games:
- Fighters History ( Arcade and Super NES )
- Fighters History Dynamite / Karnovs Revenge ( Neo Geo, Neo Geo CD and Sarurn )
- Fighters History Mizoguchi Kiki Ippatsu ( Super NES )

This is a thread to talk about those red-headed step children that everyone thinks are terrible, yet for some reason you are drawn to.

Mine is: Bram Stokers Dracula for the Sega CD
This game is great! You get a few basic actions, punch, kick (which is a funny little shin kick), jump, and the devistating jump kick. The game is pretty damn difficult and the collision detection can be frustrating at times, but kicking those spiders, books, etc is priceless. The game also has different paths you can take with the screen rotating poorly when you choose a side door which suprised the hell out of me when I did it on accident for the first time. Also, movie cut screens of Keanu Reeves show up from time to time...sweet. Unfortunately my only access to this game was through a friend who has moved away, time to invest in a sega cd and finally defeat dracula!

I've always been a fan of the hated Quattro 4-Sports game for the NES. The gameplay physics are so horrendous, it's hilarious. You can swing and hit the ball twice in the tennis game. Soccer players can score goals easily from the mid-field line as long as it's lined up.

The designers obviously had no idea how baseball works, because games last ten innings and there is no shortstop. Every pitch the computer throws is a strike down the middle of the plate and every hit ball curves wildly. It plays like a ridiculous mash-up of Baseball Simulator 1.000 and Baseball Stars.

Play Action Football for the Gameboy. 1-player mode. The computer is literally brain dead and plays on autopilot. The only thing stopping you from going for a 80-90 yard touchdown on every running or passing play is the fact that you don't have an unlimited speed burst and the computer defenders move a step or two faster than your guys. On defense, there is a 4-3 blitz that is 98% foolproof. Run that one defensive play all game long and watch the sacks and negative yardage against the computer pile up. That 4-3 blitz play is almost a guaranteed sack or a "stuff the running back for a 5 yard loss."

On offense, you can get away with doing the shotgun bomb on pretty much every play, assuming you choose a team with that in the playbook, and an occasional lead option running play just to mix it up. You can finish a game with the computer having -70 total yards and you having somewhere around 750-800 total yards, most of it passing, and 80-90 points. Too bad you can't keep track of total sacks, though. I'll bet I've sacked the CPU 20-25 times in a game.

I'm LOVING Astonishia Story. I know it got universal medicore reviews (and for good reason, because the game really does suck) but there's an incredible charm to it. Mostly in its old school execution but also with it's absolutely INSANE forth-wall breaking humor.

I won't spoil it, but just grab a copy and play till about the third hour mark. Look for the crazy Earthbound-style characters. Yeah, you heard me.

Genesis? DJ Boy, Ka-Ge-Ki, and Pit Fighter get a lot of hate (especially the last two) but I love them.

NES? Deadly Towers and Hydlide. Yeah, I like those games. Any game that features leveling up is alright by me, loneliness and weak swords not withstanding. And Hydlide's rogue-like gameplay is right up my alley.

Sega CD? Gotta be 3 Ninjas. It's actually a freaking awesome platformer. Props to Cadillacs and Dinosaurs for some great co-op play and Sewer Shark for being so damn rad.

But let's be fair, Bram Stoker's Dracula is awful; making those jumps on the second level are absolutely brutal.

Gyromite lame? Blaspheme!

I used to always play the game (without ROB of course) and enjoyed the hell out of it, the sleepwalking game was especially addicting. It's also a fun little two player game, purposely killing whoever was playing the scientist was always a trip.

See, I never got the whole speech impediment thing that gamers bring up regarding ALTERED BEAST. It sounds fine to me. In fact, it sounds pretty badass. Like Harvey Keitel in BAD LIEUTENANT badass. Adding this lisp in makes him sound like some sheepish Elmer Fudd. He's Zues for chrissake!

My comments on the control are not entirely accurate - it's been ages since I've played the BEAST on the Genesis. I tore it up lately on the SMS though, and while I admire the port, the controls are pretty muddy. And there's no sound sampling. What gives?

Tommy Lasorda Baseball (Genesis)

This game came out before sports games had real time statistics (1989/90...can't remember). I used a notebook to keep every possible stat for all the players on my teams (American League Milwaukee and National League Chicago). No one seems to remember this game, let alone like it.

I own it and love it. I think it was, and is, an excellent baseball game. It wasn't really unique in any noteworthy way, but it had really good graphics (for the time) and was just fun. Around that time I also thoroughly enjoyed Joe Montana Sports Talk Football, which I doubt many other people liked. The AI was retarded, but it was fun doing laps around the field indefinitely.

I agree. People always say Altered Beast is too short. Yeah, so is Haunted House on the 2600 and you don't see people saying it sucks because of its length.

I've acquired two copies of Lasorda this year, one of which I may need to sell. I've played it a few times over the past 4-5 weeks, it is still fun and the games go by lightning fast.

I kept a similar notebook for RBI Baseball 2 on the NES with their Oakland A's team.

I don't know of anyone who says the Lasorda game is bad, I'm sure they just never mention it because "it hasn't aged well" (a common criticism for some folks), it didn't have real players/teams and later games that came out were seen as "better." Yet I think it is a pretty good game, even today. No reason you can't reissue this one as a downloadable game, I'm figuring it hasn't been done already. No real players or teams you gotta worry about getting the "rights" for and I bet it'd be halfway fun playing this online with a few people around the US.

I always liked that game, I thought it was pretty unique for its time, and a lot better than the NOES game. The music will always stick with me though, and those random Jason attacks. Screw SILENT HILL, FRIDAY THE 13TH is the scariest game out there!

Ultima: Exodus on the NES has a pretty yucky reputation, but I like it.

I also really liked all those ports of Ghostbusters. The SMS version is superior, but I've played all the way through the NES version as well. Question for the hardcores-is that a Micronics/Ponycanyon creation?

NES Tiger-Heli also floats my boat in all it's sucky goodness. It just has neat music.

I find something appealing about Acclaim's Star Voyager too. It's an atmosphere thing. I like the sound and the sparse visuals.

Super Mario Bros 2 (NES)

That's a great game and one of my favorites. Do most people hate it?

Space Harrier II: Genesis

My guilty pleasure is Altered Beast for Sega Genesis

My friend received a Genesis for Christmas in 1989. Space Harrier II and Altered Beast impressed me back then. They're still pretty good.

People always say Altered Beast is too short. Yeah, so is Haunted House on the 2600 and you don't see people saying it sucks because of its length.

Comparing the length of an Atari 2600 game from 1982 to the length of a Sega Genesis game from 1989 is a bit silly.

That said, I guess I'd rather play Altered Beast than Haunted House.

"Pro Wrestling" for NES.

My friends and I had a lot of fun with Pro Wrestling. It was great. I don't remember anyone hating it.

NES Tiger-Heli also floats my boat in all it's sucky goodness. It just has neat music.

Tiger-Heli was pretty decent on the NES. I remember playing it for several hours one day and it just kept going. Did it ever end?

Super Mario 2 was a lot of fun.

Altered Beast I wrote a review for at sega-16 and gave it a good review at that.

Final Fantasy VIII was good just had a steep curve on getting used to it.

What I never understood was the general hatred of Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. Both games were great imo. Better than some 3d attempts by other franchises. I still play Sonic Adventure 2.

Here are some of the games I like everyone else hates:

- Pokemon Crystal (GBC): Such a solid handheld RPG with surprizingly deep gameplay, but most everyone I know says it sucks because "It's just another Pokemon, it's nothing special".

- Super Princess Peach (DS): Everyone I know hates it because it stars Peach, but it's one of the DS's best platform games that doesn't have "Mario" in the title.

- Hover! (PC): Most didn't like it because of shallow gameplay and only 3 different stages, but I still love it (And what do you expect from a free game included on Windows 95's CD?). Holdin' out for a Xbox Live Arcade version...

The original Shenmue.

I admit that the game is very slow, the gameplay is sub-par, and the voice acting is horrid. For some reason though, I just get that nostalgic Sega feeling while playing it. I really love the atmosphere that the game gives off too. I think that Shenmue 2 is a huge improvement over the original, but the original will still always have a place in my heart. Whenever I think of the Dreamcast, the original Shenmue is one of the first games that comes to my mind.

Nope. Tiger-Heli is an infinite repeat. I never played the arcade version, so I don't know if it's any different in that respect.

Oh, and to whoever said Friday the 13th--that is a pretty imaginative game for a movie-based cash cow. They really tried to do something cool with it. Same thing with NES Jaws and Platoon. Two games that so many people talk trash about, but their actually pretty decent. Platoon kind of plays like it's broken at times, but it's got some great ideas and the music is quite...eerie.

Personally, I think Jaws just plain rocks. The concept is so retarded that it just works somehow and it ends up being quite fun--kind of complex, too. It took me a long time to figure out, but it's well worth playing all the way through. The last sequence is pretty nice to look at, too with all that parallax scrolling of the water. "Smile, you sonofabitch!"

Just thought of another one: Peek-A-Boo Poker. It's awful. It's slow. It cheats. Despite this, me and my girlfriend played this piece of shit all weekend once. We were obsessed with getting the chicks to take their clothes off. When we finally won one, it was pretty anticlimactic. But it was fun, I won't deny that. It's probably just because the game itself was poker, but the promise of the nude-chick sequences definitely enhanced the experience.

The Timesplitters series.

Even though I'm aware that it's done "well enough" to have a 4th installment / current gen sequel (recently announced),

when I tell people that it's my favorite FPS series, they either tilt their head like a confused puppy (usually out of complete un-awareness of the series) or they proceed to tell me how much they hate the series and/or how it's not as good as HALO / Half Life 2, etc.

Club Drive for the Jag -
This game gets almost no love. My friend thought it was a blast and talked about it for years. I finally came across a copy and bought it and called him up and we had a blast. We stayed up all night playing it. Its just a simple FUN game.

Blue Stinger on the Dreamcast -
This game was universally panned. WHY!?!?!? It had great graphics and an incredible musical score. I know most people said it had camera issues but if it did, it never bothered me. I think the problem was that people tried to take it seriously like Resident Evil. The game was serious at times but overall it just parodied the genere and with great succsess I must say. I also liked the RPG elements. Its one of the most fun games I have played in the past 10 years... Go ahead and flame me... but its true... I love Blue Stinger!

I've seen many people dislike New Super Mario Bros, but I considered it the best Mario game since 64 (till Galaxy came out, at least)

First things that come to mind for me are:

Fossil League (DS), Digimon Series (PS1, DS)- I have a thing for mediocre Pokemon clones, or so I've learned over the years.

Deadly Towers (NES)- Terrible music and terrible level and character design. Why can't I stop playing it?

Pac-Man 2 (Genesis)- I must've rented this a hundred times as a kid before I finally bought it. Pac's reactions are still as priceless as they ever were!

Club Drive is another favorite Jaguar game of mine. South Park Rally on the Dreamcast was pretty panned, mainly because the tracks weren't well defined and you could easily go off them if you so desired. That's why I loved it! You could zip off where the computer generated karts couldn't normally follow, which was pretty great. Speaking of kart games, Merlin Racing on the Nuon was another favorite, far more so than Tempest 3000.

There's so many other unpopular games that I love, I can't think of them off the top of my head. I'll happily give a game a lot of slack to get down to what the designers had in mind.

I have always like Echo Night for the playstation. Seems to get usually dissed (when mentioned at all). Was really more of a story telling game wrapped up as a mystery than anything else. The ending was really jarring in terms of gameplay since it was totally different than the rest of the game. The movie "Ghost Ship" (2002) reminded me a lot of Echo Night. I also liked it a lot whilst most critics didn't.

Another game I liked was Vandal Hearts II for the playstation. It had a really crummy battle system but if you could see beyond that it had a lot of really great features. The battle system didn't bother me as much as it seemed to bother others if you take into consideration that most AIs in console SRPGs are dumber than boxes of rocks anyway - which typically makes the games less than challenging no matter what the battle system is.

Gotta be Space Giraffe, though that's no so much 'generally disliked' as 'divides the gaming community something rotten, at least amongst those who gave it a chance'.

Can't think of any others off the top of my head but I'm sure there were some in the old days. I even remember getting some mileage... okay, yardage... out of ALF on the Master System, though I may have borrowed that game simply to see how bad it truly was.

Echo Night was reviewed this month in Game Informer's "Classic Review" section. They knocked it...I think it got a 6. They just felt there were some flaws in it, but it had potential to be cool. It actually looks kind of interesting to me...like 'D' or 7th Guest, or even Mansion of Hidden Souls. Those games are usually fun once, and tend to have cool soundtracks.

@Nebagram--I've experimented with ALF and, although I couldn't be bothered with that game today, I think that, based on the adventure/action gameplay, that's probably a game I would have really enjoyed at the time of its release. It's got a bad rep but I think it looks amusing. [It's probably more fun and less bland than freakin' Miracle Warriors, that's for sure.]
