View Full Version : Most un-intentionally funny moments in games?

What do you think the most unintentionally funny moments are in video games? I've got a few that come to mind...

1. The first time I actually saw Beat 'Em and Eat 'Em on my friend's emulator. Having owned Custard's Revenge, I thought I held the high mark (or low mark) in video game pornography. I was wrong.

2. When the pig commits suicide in Illusion of Gaia for the SNES. One of the most cheesely mellow dramatic scenes in video game history that had me busting a gut when I saw it.

3. Seeing "I fell asleep" while playing Metal Gear for the first time when I, was like, 8, I laughed so hard I fell off the bed and broke my leg when I landed on my dip-shit brother's rollerskate. Well, I guess you had to be there.

Without question, the voice acting in Castlevania SOTN. Especially at the beginning. It helps that they made the voices 10 times louder than the rest of the game. And the dialogue!

Play Club Drive for the Jaguar. The physics engine will have you in stitches. And play the arcade version of Punisher, or the Genesis version at least. The violence is so excessive and straight faced. It makes for great morbid comedy.

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs by Capcom, arcade. The way those fat guys laugh and explode when you hit them with a bazooka cracks me up everytime.

Ooh, I forgot a good one. The final enemy of Bionic Commando for the NES is shown in a deadpan portrait that looks exactly like a hybrid of Bob Newhart and Adolf Hitler. That's about one of the funniest sights in an NES game.

Ice Climber and 2 players is a guarranteed pants wetter. I can't remember if it was level 14 or 16 but try getting up while knocking down your oppoment. The first time I played this with my brother I had to pause the game so both of us could catch out breath from laughing so hard.

The boss fight against Krang in NES TMNT 3. THe first time my sister and I made it up to Krang this goofy music started up, Krang's theme, setting the mood and after awhile Krang got enough damage that he split in two parts. His top half would float in the air while his torso and legs would run on their own, kicking us. We both burst out laughing at that sight.

Probably the older games that have totally unrealistic combat, then again, some games today do, too. Like for instance, Guerilla War or the Punisher for the NES. You know where you have to pump an enemy (HUMAN enemy) completely full of lead before you even stop them. The last guy in Guerilla War is some HUMAN dictator and you got to shoot the bastard probably 50-60 times with your gun or nail him with about 40-50 grenades. Same with the Punisher. You face a guy in a ninja outfit and the Kingpin in a leisure suit and you need to shoot them with a full burst of your machine gun for probably 3 or 4 consecutive minutes, maybe 300 rounds, on top of hitting them with grenades and rocket launchers over a dozen times. Maybe it's just me but I always found that amusing......for all it's faults Dick Tracy (NES) was slightly realistic, considering you would need only one or two shots or could just flatten enemies with a few punches.

Metal Gear Solid, when you're crawling around in an air vent surrounded by enemy soldiers and Master Miller starts rambling about field mice.

Also, the end. Liquid Snake loses a fist fight, falls a couple stories, gets shot with a machine gun a few dozen times, gets in a car crash, and he's STILL just fine.

I have to second the voice-acting in the first Resident Evil. It's not just the bad lines but the people they hired seem unable to even pronounce correctly the simplest words. I remember the woman saying "Barry, where have you been?" and she pronounces been like "bean". I need to go play it again now, just for those moments.

I also remember Microleague Baseball for the Atari ST computers years ago. There was a bug in it that occurred once in awhile where, when the players would field and throw the ball, you'd see the diving animation from them you usually got from a batter when he was being hit by a pitch.

Final Zone II for the TurboGrafx CD. The voice acting it in was o bad they had to have been reading off scripts they had seen for the first time. Not only were they reading it slow and without inflection, but the dialoge was just bad. Stuff like "Oh... there you... are. I'm going... to... have... to kill... you". I couldn't stop laughing. Thank god the game was short.

Quite sadly, I know that his name is KIRK Cameron, not Kurt. And I found the FMV in The Horde (a top-ten 3DO game later ported to the Saturn and PC, but never the PS1!) unoffensive -- certainly not good, but not gawd-awful, either. There was at least an attempt at production values, which is more than can be said for most FMV of the era.

What's even sadder than you knowing how to spell his name properly is you defending it :D

Just kidding of course. FYI: I'm not saying it's bad, just that I found it to be the first funniest 'unintentional' bit to come to my sad little mind. The fact taht he's in a 3DO game has always killed me (and *all* FMV kills me).

I love beating up the foot soldiers in TMNT II for the NES. You hit a guy in a ninja suit a couple times, he falls down, then, for some inexplicable reason, EXPLODES. ("Watch those lackies, they're volatile!")

Then there's the guy outside the Saith bar in Lunar: SSSC, who calls it "The most wretched hive of scum and villainy I've ever seen...Plus, the beer is watered down!" All right, it's not unintentional, but I just found that game and I'm thinking of naming my firstborn after the translator. (Er, localizer. Whatever.)

The original foot clan were robots, although this has been changed in the new cartoon.

Until Kaine23 mentioned it, I was like "What about "spoony bard?" that is the ultimate! Well, apart from "All your base are belong to us," but that thing is largely funny due to the cult following it has rather than the fact that large amounts of people actually played the game itself and found it funny.

The voice-acting in SotN is pretty hilarous, too. That librarian: "what can I DO for you?!" hahahaha

The REALLY funny (or should I say odd) thing is that as bad as the voice-acting in SotN is it doesn't ruin the game or make it anything less than a superb classic.

LOL Aaaah, the tank from GEye. That brings back a lot of fond memories. I remember doing the same thing as well. I would go through the Streets stage over and over again just to run over guys, cars, jeep, more cars, more guys, even more guys... Mindless fun. Any wonder my parents didn't think I was warped from all the weird stuff I did in that game. 8-)

Then there was the time I snuck up on a scientist in the Caverns stage and placed a timed mine right under his legs. He just stood there, like nothing was happening, then BOOM! He actually flew like 10 feet in the air. MY GAWD, I never laughed so hard.....

Although it was not funny at first, but I remember the time I shot 3 entire clips of 30 bullets each at a friend in multiplayer and not one damn bullet hit him. When I look back on that, I laugh...

Oh wait, this is supposed to be for all games, not just Goldeneye 64... ;)

How about in Bionic Commando for the nes when one of the enemy soldiers called you a nerd. I believe the exact quote was something like, "Get outa the way you nerd!" It's bad enough when real people call you a nerd, but when your' video games doing it, well, it really makes you think!

Anyone remember on the old ezboards there was a topic for "funniest moments" in games. Who was it that posted that one game where there were these 2 gay looking guys (I think it was some puzzle games).. anyway it was a series of pics showing progressively more gayer activity then the poster at the end put in his own hand drawn picture at the end. It was hilarious! Who did that? Anyone remember? And what game was it?

Un-intentionally funny?

How about the entire game of The Bouncer? Or Daikatna LOL

Actually, there's a great little trick you can do with Bloody Roar: Primal Fury on the Game Cube.

Choose the bat girl and the main character guy (I think it's him). When you push the two together, and wait a second or two for the animation to synch with each other, it looks like the Bat Girl is...uh...rubbing him the right way with her forward hand. @_@ It'll only work with the right guy character though, due to the height.

I'd have to say Super Bust-a-Move 2 on the PS2. The cut-scenes feature beautiful cartoony graphics and are promptly ruined whenever a character talks - the voice acting is just utterly abysmal. I laughed the first time through but the second time it was just too painful to listen to!

A recent event happened when playing Chrono Cross. I had just bought it, and a friend of mine who loves the game came over to play it. The first time I saw Poshul, I laughed so hard that fell off my chair and was rolling on the floor. My friend was shrieking like a two-year old schoolgirl. And then came Mojo....

Oh yeah, and playing Megaman 3 the first time and finding out there's a character named Hard Man.

Also, for some reason, Eternal Darkness didn't really put me in a spooky mood. So being far-removed from the game, there were some funny moments--like the oh-so scary voice that gives you clues...

Anyone play Super Noah's Ark for the SNES by Wisdom Tree? The game uses the Wolfenstein game engine as you (Noah) go through the ark blasting animals with fruit. These damned things sneak up on you and attack you and you just have to keep reaming them with fruit and they will eventually go to sleep. Just a surreal experience.

I'd have to say when I first put in the Saturn version of Corpse Killer. Those zombies looked so stupid. They just flew all over and looked like they just took a buch of zombie pictures and put them over top of a background...It was so funny I forgot to laugh. And I mean that literally, not joking. * Menu items at the Merv Burger :)

* Guys who say "BARF!!" when they expire

There is a certain magic about Shenmue...

It's epic, fun, has a great story, great characters, great feel, amazing graphics, incredible music...

Yet the game has lines like the one above that have become classics, and the overall voice acting is just terrible.

However the game isn't made any less fun or enjoyable by the bad voice acting, or dialouge.

Every single time Mario speaks in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door... I laugh a little bit inside "Oh Yeah!"

This is probably supposed to be funny, but the whole Gonzalez name for Mario in the same game cracks me up!

When I played Sword Of The Beserk for Dreamcast one of the guy's in the beginning is called Lord Ballzac.

"Lord Ballzac!"

Ahhhhhhhahahaha, I laughed about that for quite a while after that cutscene.

I thought it was funny how in the game Major League Baseball for nes you can give someone an intentional walk but throw them out at first before they get there.

I don't know if they made the voice-overs on House of the Dead terrible on purpose but if you watch it messed up... its hilarious.

I always try to enter some stupid fake name. For Zelda: Wind Waker, I entered my name as Mike Hunt. Overdone, but still funny.

I didn't realize that it would use that name throughout the game text.

Reading things like "Mike Hunt is the savior of our land!" always made me laugh.

I guess my sense of humor is kind of childish...

GTA3:

I was driving in a fire engine, Then I wrecked it. I ran from it before it blew up, And after it did, Two people got closer to the truck. One is an old lady, Who said:

"In ALL Mah years"

"Ah ain't never seen that before"

LOL

Another time I stole a Banshee car right from the showroom, Then I went to answer a telephone call. Someone is looking at the car. So I got back in the car, The punk throws me out and steals it for himself.. I was like :eek 2: Get back here ya creep!!

LOL

Cro Mag Rally (Macintosh Computer Game)

It has been a Long time since I played this racing game, But I remember going into the online mode (I didn't have it online, I was the only one there) Then I would go collecting a LOT of mines (Like 100) Then I would put them all in the same place (They don't take up any space :hmm:) Then i'd run my car over them, And They'd make me go flying fifty miles high! ROFL

House of the Dead 2 has the worst voice acting of all time.

"My. God."

I don't know.. Have you ever heard the dialogue in any of the Tenchu games? With such phrases as "So the mice come out to play, that mean Goo get too play too." (http://www.tenchu.de/sounds/english/tenchu1/q8.mp3) or "You have done well. Come Lord Gohda is waiting for you." (http://www.tenchu.de/sounds/english/tenchu1/q30.mp3) it's pretty hard to tell what's worse.

In Sonic Adventure, in the opening scene, when the SWAT team hits the Chao monster with bullets, and then one says 'Oh no! Our weapons are useless! Retreat, everybody, REEETTRRREAAAATTTT!!!'

I have no clue why I burst out laughing when I hear that.

He he. Tommy Boy maybe? "YOUR WEAPONS ARE USELESS AGAINST THEM!!!"

Okay, here's one. My girlfriend's brother was playing Driver 3. He jacked something that looked like a freaking moped or scooter or something. He was just tooling around on it, not going to fast. He pulled up along side of a parked car, and the car threw its door open in front of him, and he slammed into the inside of the car door and fell off the scooter. My god, that was hilarious.

And then of course he was doing all the other usual stuff like driving an SUV into someone's house, up the stairs, through the bedroom, and out onto the balcony, but I'm willing to bet everyone who's played the game has done that. Ha ha.

Super Smash Bros. Melee:

I usually play as Fox when I play this game. The first time i was playing it I was listening to ACDC.. All those stunts and ACDC mixed in... It was fun.

Tony Hawk's Underground:

I was skating in the drainage ditch in the New jersey level. (I beat the game before I did this) So, I jump up to do a wallplant on one side of the ditch, But my character falls of of the board. Get this, He did a wallplant while bailing.

What about in Wrath of the Black Manta when you recieve a note saying, "The man in red knows something", and you proceed to interogate the man in red who then replies with "I don't know anything." Huh?!

Heh. I was watching my friend play Freedom Force, he was replaying the 'sneak into the warehouse block' mission with a custom character who could turn invisible.

He gets up to two of the thugs, standing next to a lamppost. He rips out the lamppost. Now, it's literally right behind them.

They completely FAIL to notice him do this. The lamppost is floating in the air behind them. You'd think they'd have heard the horrendous sound of it being torn out.

He backed it up so our friend, who heard the loud laughter from the back room, could see what we were laughing about. And he proceeded to also bust his gut.

This one is so funny.

I was playing Saint's row online the other week. I was standing next to a fire hydrant (Just standing) And then two guys in a truck (On my team) Came over To get me, The game thinks the fire hydrant was "Run over" And my character went flying 5 feet into the air as the water comes out of the ground. The Dreamcast was the first system I imported for and likewise also gave me my first exposure to engrish. I try playing my games as music CDs in the system to see if I can find something (ie: the funny message from Skies of Arcadia or music from Quake III Arena). So anyway, I took one of my Japanese games and tried it out and got a woman's voice saying something like, "This disc is for use only on Sega Dreamcast. Prease do not pray." Maybe I'm just ignorant but I thought it was pretty funny since I wasn't expecting it. lol

A lot of the voice acting in Shenmue was good for a bunch of laughs too. Some of them just sound really goofy like a bunch of the kids and Goro (was that his name?). "Yo bro!"

The funniest moment I have seen in a video game that was not intentional would have to be in Zelda II for the NES when you are in town one of the villagers looks like Kevin Nealon from the old Saturday Night Live. My friends and I used to laugh at this all of the time back in the day.

John Crawley ending in AOF 2.
Ahh SNK and there english translations LOL
http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/neogeo/a/aof2john.htm

Having never played that game, I have to say the majority of those endings are pretty funny.

The one thing that comes to mind for me, in this topic, would be any game that has enemies which regenerate. The early Contras, Mega Man's and other similar games were always guilty of this.

Funniest unintentional moment for me:

The first time I played through Dragon Warrior III, I named one of my guys "Boner" (immature, I know). Anyway, at some point I had to leave him behind to found a new village. Well I went back at some point and it said "welcome to Bonertown" or something like that and all the signs made reference to Bonertown or whatever they were calling it. Anyway, I must've laughed for a week straight from that. It actually doesn't sound that funny as I type this, but it was so completely unexpected at the time (and I was a juvenile teenager) that I just put on my Lollerskates and went for a long, long ride. :P

This one scene in Splatterhouse 3 where the ghost girl plays the piano. I used to scare the fuck out of my friends by walking up to the ghost, and shouting like I was Howard Dean. That, combined with the ghost's transformation from cute girl to evil ghost-monster head made them jump. I used that to get a laugh out of not only myself, but out of my victims, too.

The piano room scene.

Rick-Here I am. (Poof! The girl appears.) A girl? What's she doing here? Hey, little girl.
Me (As the ghost turns into a monster head)-GYAAAAAHHHH!!
Friends (Jumping, scared)-YIPE!!! (Turning to me.) You asshole!
Me-Ain't I, though? (We share a laugh.)

the thing that made me laugh is when I saw the coach giving his boxer a Blowjob in between rounds in the nes game RING KING.

The slow-dancing also made me laugh. My brother and I used to joke about those two scenes all the time.

The most unintentially funny moment of all time HAS to be the scenes from the Zelda games for the Philips CD-i. If you don't own the game, just search for them on YouTube and you'll instantly feel the same way. Unlike ALLLLL the other early CD games of the 90s with bad voice-acting, these take an established classic character we know and love and absolutely massacres him and makes him look like the biggest dork ever. "How about a kiss, for luck?" (from Faces of Evil) Easily the most painful line of dialogue in video game history!

Just the way they move in the animation is enough to have you rolling on the floor, even with the sound muted. Zelda's Adventure even has a real-life Link, rather than an animation. Combine all these with the dialogue, and nothing comes close, and it easily tops my list. Any disagreement to that?
