If I had a DS, I would upgrade to a DS Lite... Would YOU?

It doesn't matter if you or I would; we're insane retro-collectors who represent about 1% of the gaming population (at the most). Regular Joe Gamer ain't gonna go buy a new system redesign when the one he's got works just fine. Hasn't happened before, won't happen now.

If you look at the GBA and GBA SP, i think you'll find that lots of people switched. The slimline PS2 was the same, most people I know switched.

The DS... Other than children, people who play it regularly will see the benefeits and decide to buy the DS Lite. I'm an insane gamer, but my collection is pitiful, I have less than you can imagine. I move from country to country all the time and just don't have the ability to start a real collection yet. I buy things, then get rid of them... The DS, well I don't have one, but if I did I would switch. The original design is horrible and chunky, the new design is actually respectable and competes with the PSP.

Sorry to awaken this thread... but my DS Lite is shipping today from the US today. Should be with my eBayer in a couple of days, and then it is on its way to me.

I will post impressions as soon as it is in my hands. I opted for the Navy, by the way. It was a TOUGH choice.

My navy Lite arrived this morning. I had a quick play at lunch. I could not be more impressed if I tried. This is everything I hoped it would be!

Besides the screens (which REALLY make an impact), the overall redesign, feel and compactness of the unit really stands out. And damn, this thing is shiny - and not PSP fingerprint-loving shiny, either.

I'll field any questions you may have :)

You got me... I only bought it to make you jealous, Fox! ;) You're always welcome to pop over... and stare at it. Just don't give it the "I'm stealing you" look of death.

I willingly paid a little over the odds, but it was worth it. I truly adore it.

I'm going to dig out my digital camera tonight, and take a heap of snaps. Every angle will no doubt be covered :)

However, Dual Screen Radio's gallery may be of interest. Some good photos, indeed. You can find it here (http://www.dualscreenradio.com/picgallery/).

I'll post if/when I upload some pictures.

Wow that ds lite looks black

In dim/no light, it certainly does look black. And with the crisper and brighter screens, the screens look as if they are just floating in mid air.

I love the screens on these things. Even though I just bought the Nintendogs Bundle DS I think I may get one of these when they hit $100 or less (since the Teal DS is dominated my by girlfriend anyway), though I'll definately get a white one to match my Mac :)

I'd be willing to bet on $150, $20 more than the current MSRP for the DS.

1. Nintendo likes money.
2. It costs more than the regular DS in Japan.
3. It's 50% cooler than the Game Boy Micro.

Thanks for PMing me! GOSH!

looks good man (just like mine!). I must agree with everything that THATinkjar said, although I don't have any basis for comparison except for the few times I have played a regular DS at kiosks. The unit works superbly, although I prefer playing my GBA games on my micro.

still haven't had time to play many of my games yet though. I got alot of stuff in my life to wrap up right now. I'm kinda addicted to minish cap right now too, which has prevented me from playing much of any other game.

I don't think I could accept anything less than the Lite now. I'm spoiled. :D

The news we have all been waiting for dropped today!

Nintendo announced today that the DS Lite will launch on June 11, for a retail price of $129.99. Sadly, the colors weren't announced today. I guess it's pearly white for the ones who waited.

I gotta admit, the price took me by suprise. I was thinking that we would see atleast a $150.00 package.

REDMOND, Wash., May 4, 2006 - Millions of people around the world already enjoy playing Nintendo DS™, and the system’s future looks even brighter. On June 11, Nintendo DS™ Lite joins Nintendo’s video game family when it launches in the Americas. The lighter, brighter version of the hot-selling Nintendo DS is expected to be priced as low as $129.99 at retailers throughout the United States. The inaugural color is an elegant Polar White with a raised DS logo on the cover.

Nintendo DS Lite arrives just in time for players to pop in the latest version of one of the most storied franchises in video game history. New Super Mario Bros.®, launching May 15, updates classic Mushroom Kingdom action with new features and fun.

“DS Lite and New Super Mario Bros. represent a double shot of gaming excellence,” says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “We’ve got something for both lovers of beautiful, new gadgets and fans of old-school gaming.”

Nintendo DS Lite comes with a variety of distinctive changes that set it apart from the original - and from all other hand-held video game systems:

* It’s less than two-thirds the size of the original Nintendo DS and more than 20 percent lighter.
* Its two bright screens can be adjusted to four levels to adapt to different lighting conditions and to extend battery power.
* The microphone sits in the center of the unit, and the LED lights are clearly visible whether the unit is open or closed.
* The stylus is 1 centimeter longer and 1 millimeter thicker than the stylus of the original, and slides into a side storage slot.
* The Start and Select buttons were repositioned for easier access.
* A removable cover keeps the Game Boy® Advance cartridge slot clear from dust and debris when it’s not in use.

New Super Mario Bros. is just one of the many Nintendo DS games that look great on Nintendo DS Lite. Players set off on a side-scrolling platform adventure bursting with the style and superb game play that got many people hooked on video games in the first place. The Mushroom Kingdom is populated with friends and foes, both new and old, and tons of power-ups, including mushrooms that make Mario mega- and micro-sized. The Super Mario franchise has sold more than 184 million games worldwide, which makes it one of the top-selling video game franchises of all time.

Ever since its November 2004 launch, the original Nintendo DS has helped to redefine perceptions of what constitutes a video game. Many systems have been sold to people who are discovering video games for the first time. Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo’s wireless gaming service, has seen more than 1 million connections worldwide. Thousands of people every day log on to battle one another in Metroid® Prime Hunters or see who has all their Tetriminos (falling blocks) in a row in Tetris® DS.

Nintendo DS continues to broaden the market for video games. Nintendo DS has software that appeals to older gamers, hard-core gamers and even lapsed gamers. Brain Age™: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day went on sale in the United States on April 17 after encountering massive success in Japan. Nintendo will continue that momentum by introducing two upcoming titles that require more brain power than firepower. On June 5, Big Brain Academy™ arrives to challenge users with a variety of mental tests designed to evaluate various skills. Then on June 26, Sudoku Gridmaster will keep number crunchers busy with more than 400 sudoku puzzles, each one sanctioned by the original creators of sudoku.

The worldwide innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its Wii™, Nintendo DS™, Game Boy® Advance and Nintendo GameCube™ systems. Since 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 2 billion video games and more than 360 million hardware units globally, and has created industry icons like Mario™, Donkey Kong®, Metroid®, Zelda™ and Pokémon®. A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo’s operations in the Western Hemisphere. My rep came in today. She didn't know anything yet but did mention this press release. Nice to see a final date. But damn. June 11th?

Guess I won't be getting any bundle this time. NEW SMB will be bought day one DS Lite or no DS Lite. Even if "N" announces a bundle on the 9th.

So I'm actually hoping for no bundle. Because I don't want to be tempted. Because of course, even if I own NSMB, I can't guarantee I won't buy a bundle too. LOL

She said she'll be back in next month to switch out our DS Kiosk with the Lite. All the stuff she was telling me I was like "I know. I'm pretty well up on my Nintendo knowledge". LOL Can't wait!

So... this will probably be the last meaningful update to this thread. *sniff*. We've had some good times, right?

[Insert 80's dream-like video of the great memories from this thread...]

Anyway, yesterday Nintendo announced that the DS Lite would be heading to Europe on Friday the 23rd of June - which is exactly one month today! New. Super Mario Bros. follows a week later, and Electroplankton the week after that in early July.

Europe will be getting two colours: white, which was released in both Japan and the US (and proved very popular), and the much rumoured (and much anticipated) black. Or chocolate brown as it looks like in some of the promotional shots.

While I already have, and love, an imported Navy DS Lite, I'm pretty damn sure I'll pick up at least the white next month, if not both. Yes, I am insane.

You can read the usual press release blurb at Nintendo-Europe here (http://www.nintendo-europe.com/NOE/en/GB/news/article.do?elementId=Z9ktvFs1LILlR7g_KiA5U47N7DMEz kpA). That'll be £99 please, sir.

Crystal/Polar White
Ice Blue
Enamel Navy
Black

Only White is available at launch here in North America, but aren't we still setup to eventually get the other colors? I read on wiki that they had issues in manufacturing the other colors and that's the cause of delays. I'd really like to get the Ice Blue or Emanel Navy and would be willing to wait an extra month or so if it is to be sold here. There are claims the other colors will be sent out a short period after the DS lite launch but how long and do they plan to make an extra color anywhere or end up removing one?

Employees preorder, too. Being one of the first to preorder (systems especially) is one of the perks of being in/at a game store 40 hours a week. One of the few perks, I should say. Lying to idiots is another. Also there's the free games, magazines and systems. Not great systems, I'm talking like Virtual Boy and Game.com model 2. Occationally a broker Genesis or Game Boy Color.

I'll call tomorrow, see if this will be a limited release or just a slow first two weeks to build demand.

Maybe because they didn't want to pay an additional $70 for the thing.

I WISH it came out today, but what the hell I can wait another 11 days, no biggie. If I really wanted one I probably could've gotten one last Saturday when I was in Chinatown. I'm sure J&L Games has them instock already, but they're also probably charging more than $129.

See, the thing with that, is that I had mine preordered about 3 days after the announcement. Well, March rolls around(or whatever month it was) and I recieve an email saying that it will be an additional $90-$100 to ship due to the high demand.

What I think is really weierd is the Sunday release date. Usually things come out on either a Monday, tuesday or Wednesday.

I wonder if any retailers around me are upset that the system is being released on a half day, since 90% of stores are only open from Noon to 6pm on Sunday.

The original DS came out on Sunday, November 21st, 2004. It's not that odd for a Nintendo product to come out on a Sunday.

Our rep came in and pretty much said everything I already knew about everything so far. She has no extra info on anything. She said the date was still the 11th and that she was telling me because some stores had sold them already so she wanted me to know it's not out yet. Well, duh. I still can't sell it because it's still coming up "Before Sell Date" in the register. So oh well.

You would think that, but so far, on the second highest bright setting, (the default), I have gotten 14 hours before the system need to be charged... not too shabby, and thats with some wi-fi gaming thrown in... so its not really a down grade in power.

I got mine at Wal-Mart last night at midnight. Sadly though, I was the only one who wanted one bad enough in my area to be waiting there the moment they brought it out.

Went home and played Animal Crossing and New SMB. Good gravy... I knew there'd be a difference in screen quality, but I didn't know it would be THIS much. It's like a whole new system now! The screens are brighter, the stylus is bigger, and the whole thing fits in yer pocket! Now I have to go through and replay all my DS games just to see how they look on the new brighter screens.

One of the best purchases a DS gamer could ever make.

Am I just dumb or is there no way to adjust the brightness without entering into the menu? That's awful if that's the case, and defnitely enough to bitch about. Also, the GBA games stick out further than I anticiapted.

On a side note, the E-Reader now works with the DS. The screens are incredible, both in purity of the color and detail. It really does make the first DS useless.

I just wanna bitch about one thing - I HATE THOSE GOD DAMN PLASTIC CASES!!

Awesome!

I am even more blown away with the screen difference in person at home. Compared to my older one, the original might as well not even have a light. Holy crap! I'm literally seeing colors I didn't know were there!

I just played a game of Mario Kart against NOA_Mike. I lost of course. And the other two dropped out after the first race even though Mike got third and I was fourth. So I ended up losing by 8 points in second place.

My only disappointments are the sound seems VERY low now. Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't hear it at all on the highest volume. Also, why the fuck didn't they put in a GBA "Switch buttons" option? It's even HARDER to play GBA games now. Fucking hell. I NEED THE BUTTONS TO BE THE Y AND B BUTTONS! THE A AND B ARE MISPLACED!

Well I just finished playing some games and I must say the increase in resolution is amazing you see colors the way they were meant to be seen. To me it enhances the playing experiance. I really had no intention of upgrading but I am glad I did.

The original ds seemed to be an indestructable handheld. The ds lite is light I hope it is just as durable. To me it feels sturdy but fragile like a PSP.

Just an observation I trust nintendo's excellent reputation in the hardware department.

I just don't understand why any store would go to the trouble of inconveniencing the customer like that. I hate those damn packs. And for things that actually come in those packs as standard, once you've sliced/ripped it open - you're without a box. Very frustrating if you actually want to keep things organised.

My only disappointments are the sound seems VERY low now. Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't hear it at all on the highest volume.

It took me ages to really appreciate that there is a big difference between the original DS and the DS Lite in terms of volume. The DS Lite is really a lot quieter - it is probably the only negative thing about it. There are fewer speaker holes either side of the top screen, which I guess explains it. With headphones, I reckon it is about the same.

A Mars Bar is only for a moment, a DS Lite is for life! Be careful, though: both look so tasty, you might eat the wrong one!

Also, was it hanging up or did the clerk have to get it for you? And even if he had to get it, did the pack have the holes for hanging it up in it? (Even if it wasn't hanging when you got it.)

I'm placing the rest of my money on "Theft deterrent". Those packs slow down thieves who try to steal the item while in the store. Since the Lite is small enough to conceal, but the box isn't, most people will try to take it out of the box first. The plastic makes it much harder.

However, it is neat that it is ocvered in a clear plastic clamshell, making it look like the same high-gloss finish as the PSP. Oh well. I had ot purchase this at sometime anyways.

Seriously, once you turn it on, you will NEVER return it.

Also, I know what you mean about the charger. The original DS and the GBA used the same charger. Then the GBmicro had a new one. Now the Lite has another one. Why not at least use the micro version.

I do like the gold color though, but it would have made more sense to make the charger white.

The good thing is, my real DS box was unharmed during the opening process.

That is a great point! Sometimes, when I open these type of packs, I actually end up damaging what is inside! They are so awkward to hold, I end up damaging any box inside. And while I've never done it... I've bought cables (most recently for my Xbox 360) which are inside these blister packs... and it would have been pretty easy to catch the cable with the knife or the scissors.

Worst. Invention. Ever.

Well, I finally did. The picture quality seems better since the colors are more defined by the brighter screen. This was especially noticeable with New Super Mario Bros. The fact that the GBA carts stick out reminds me of playing NES carts on a pocket fami. The sound volume seems fine to me, although it is a little quieter at maximum volume level. The only time I ever crank the volume is when I have headphones on anyways. I do like that the e-reader fits now, and I get to shelf my DS to ensure it doesn't get scratched up. I've had my DS since launch, and have not had a scratch on it. However, the protective cover on the back sticker was starting to peel off, and now I don't have to worry about it coming off completely.

All in all, it's a decent system. I just have a hard time adjusting to change. Anyone that has not purchased a DS yet should really consider getting the DS Lite.

In a slightly unrelated comment, does anyone know if Toys R Us will release a specal color or packaged DS for Christmas? I missed the Shrek GBA, and am not going to miss the chance to get this year's special.

I already bought a gameboy micro, and I must admit it was a very good purchase, because the thing is so damn cool (and clear), but I already own a DS, and am still deciding if $145 (tax people, come on) is worth it for a severely brighter screen, and a lighter design. Sure the damn thing lokks awsome, but is it really REALLY worth the price? to some where money is not an issue im sure you will say buy it, but for someone like me who only gets by right now based on ebay auctions, am still undecided.

My mistake. At first glance it looked goldish. But it is indeed grey but a shiny grey. Rusty grey.

Mine finally arrived today, and you know what? It does look a little gold. It's grey, but it's got that subtle hint of gold to it.

Got mine today, FINALLY!! I got it at Circuit City with the free Brian Age, and "Mario Bundle" deal. I also went to KMart and picked up Castlevania: DoS. Go me.

I bought a DS Lite on Monday and fell in love with it. The first unit I bought had a dead pixel in the touchscreen, so I took it back and exchanged it and the replacement unit is A+. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Anyone experience a dead pixel issue in their DS Lite? We had someone exchange theirs today due to a dead pizel in the Lite they bought yesterday.

Ugh, I did. Just got my new DS Lite today and as soon as I turned it on, I saw a gigantic stuck green pixel in the middle of the touch screen. x_x I *knew* I was going to get a system with at least one bum pixel. Oh well, at least I have the receipt so I can return it for another one tomorrow.

Then good thing is that I only paid $120 for it. Got mine from Target and had a $10 off coupon for any electronics item $100 and up.

Got my second DS Lite (White) this morning. The Europe box packaging is quite different to Japan's. I just don't get why they change simple things like that.

Box is twice as big, as well. The mind boggles.

Anyway, I really like the white look. It feels so different to the Navy - I can't explain it.

So - do any of our Eurogamers have the black DS lites yet?

Lets see those pics people!! :D

I'm debating if I want to import one - my gf has been hogging mine. She even went and bought herself a copy of Nintendogs.

my gf has been hogging mine.

I heard that. My girlfriend hogs my DS and plays Trauma Center non-stop. She's going to import an Ice Blue from Japan soon. (I can't wait) :P

Already had it since launch and love it to bits. Too bad theres one green stuck pixel on the top screen that won't go away :( (the pics were taken when i was running the stuck pixel fixer - didn't work btw)
Definitely worth an import.

I got my pearl white DS lite yesterday and I'm already having the girlfriend issue some of you are having. But, damn, I don't know if I care or not now that I have discovered that black one. Maybe I'll pretend I have an excuse to splurge a bit and import one.

Oh, and while I am posting, anyone have any suggestions on a reliable screen protector? I was thinking about the Hori ones, but I'm afraid that applying the them will be a bit confusing.

Hori or Martins Fields. Use no other.

Ah! I completely forgot about Martin Fields! My PSP screen protector from them has been great since launch.

Also, Enixis, I am really digging that avatar. ;)

Yeah - I'm definately gonna import a black one now.

That's just sexy!

Plus it doesn't have that smooth, plastic layer over the controls. So it looks like fingerprints and hand gunk wouldn't show up as easily. I'm tired of having to wash my hands everytime i wanna play my polar white DS to keep it from getting dirty.

I'm sold! But knowing my luck, I'll order one, and Nintendo will release them over here.

Yeah, I have been browsing around and I can only find the black lite for $199.99. Is that the actual retail price?

If anyone finds an import shop with better prices, please share! :D

Word of caution guys. Seems alot of Black DS lites have got dead / stuck pixels.
I'm going to the store tomorrow to get my unit changed because of that stuck pixel. Hope they have extra black ones in stock.

I think the regular DS has more style. I mean yes the DS lite is shiny, and smaller, and has a brighter screen. But none of that give me anough reason to actually get one. I'm not bashing anyone who has it these are just my opinions.

I wonder how many of us are going to wind up buying a second or even third DS Lite. I'm pretty thrilled with this thing, and the cheap price means I could always have a second one around for multiplayer games.

Heck, I'm even tracking down some older games like Zoo Keeper and Bomberman and Meteos, just for the multiplayer kicks. Wouldn't be surprised if I eventually caved in and bought the black Lite. If it doesn't get in the way of my record collecting, that is.

For anyone still on the fence... maybe you've been waiting for the Pink DS Lite (http://www.ds-x2.com/index.php?id=5378) to hit. :)

Hori or Martins Fields. Use no other.

Ok, i tried the Hori screen protector and it simply sucks. Ouendan kills the protector (heavy scratches). Swapped to Martin Fields and its been doing great so far.

So anyone planning to get screen protectors, use only Martin Fields. It may be expensive, but its worth it.

Ok, I really don't want to read 17 pages... so is the black one import only?

Does the European DS Lite work with a regular AC adapter? Maybe the kind the DS and GBA SP use?

I'm debating about whether it's worth it to import a black one when I might not be able to power it, it might have dead pixels, Nintendo might release that color here, and it costs 70 dollars more plus shipping.

10 bucks and a corn dog says Nintendo will release the black DS in the states within the next 6 months.

It's kinda how they work.

I hope so; I really do. The black one is much better IMO than the white. Of course, what I'm really hoping for is an extremely cool limited-edition one akin to the NES GBA or that Zelda or Mario GBA that they released over in Europe. Even a Pokemon one that had some cool illustrations on it (like that Groudon GBA @ the Nintendo World Store) would be phat.

I just got my white Lite today by trading in my old DS fat. I popped in NSMB and was amazed at just the title screen. The yellow is so beautiful on this system. Well worth the trade in.

OH GOD NO!!!!!!!

I know they're going to, and I know I will buy one, it's such a vicious cycle. It happened with the SP, then the micro, now the Lite!! When will it end, Nintendo? WHEN WILL IT END?

Hey, maybe they'll put new things up on My Nintendo next. I can dream, you know.

Yeah, I do the same, I am a sucker for buying the same thing with a different paint job.

It's Nintendo's big sick joke.
