Well, atleast this gives me a reason to play some PS2 soon.

When do we get that arcade perfect port of "Turbo Outrun"?

Now that would be REALLY awesome, considering there aren't really any good home versions of those. I'm not counting on it happening, though. In any case, the Turbo Outrun songs should be included since there were in O2 SP. Yay.
I wonder if they'll do any awesome bonus tracks for this, like they did with the XBox O2. Being able to play the Super GT and Daytona 2 courses in Outrun 2 made for a very interesting match up.

What is UP with that dumb title? 2 Cool 4 School? Putting "2" in the title of an Outrun title, and adding a year "rev" to it, makes me cringe. Classic Outrun didn't have any of that! Oh well, I've yet to pick up Outrun 2, but this should still be a great game.
Even if it's on PS2. Yuck! What about the 360?

I think the reasoning is that if they called it Outrun 2 SP like the arcade version, the title just wouldn't be distinct enough to make it stand out from Outrun 2 (which didn't get a whole lot of fanfare when it was released for the XBox). If they think changing the title around will make the game more marketable, that's fine with me, as long as they don't change the game itself significantly. A rose by any other name, etc. Now, if they want to make changes like adding more missions and bonus tracks, then I'm all for it. ;-)
Even if it's on PS2. Yuck! What about the 360?
I'm pretty sure it's also coming out for at least one of the XBoxes. It just hasn't been announced officially yet like the Sony offerings.

Yeah, but I don't see why there's a 2 in the title (outside of the 2006) at all. Outrun 2 seems to have sold rather poorly, given the huge number of copies lounging unsold at various local outlets, all the vendors still clinging to the hope that even at $20 a buyer will be found LOL

It's kind of a nod to the fact that it's still Outrun 2 (according to the naming of Outrun 2 SP), but changed enough so that the average consumer sheep can tell the difference. ;-)

8-) Looking into the future: Bad reviews.
IGN Outrun 2 review (8.2) (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/559/559263p1.html)
Gamespot review (8.3) (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/driving/outrun2/review.html)
It was a fantastic game, and everybody knew it. But it was very poorly marketed, and timed just as badly, causing it to be overshadowed by the likes of Burnout 3, etc. So the sales numbers ended up being rather dismal.
And Ed, it's "the same game" about as much as Halo 2 is the same game as Halo. I'll try to elaborate more...
Outrun 2 came out in the arcades. A year later, Outrun 2 SP came out. It was basically an expansion pack, with slightly tweaked physics, more cars, more songs, an additional set of 15 tracks, plus some additional game modes. Soon after that, the original Outrun 2 was released for XBox, but it included a couple of the SP cars, entirely new songs done for the home version, tracks from Daytona 2 and Scud Race/Super GT, plus an extensive mission mode. Coast 2 Coast is going to take all the stuff from the arcade SP, then add a bunch more things to do, just like the XBox O2 did originally. In other words, it's essentially the same game engine at heart, but with much more content.
Ed Oscuro
12-09-2005, 02:40 PM
In other words, more like Battlefield 2: Special Forces is to BF2. Halo 2 uses a new engine, after all.

Actually, I got my XBox for DDR Ultramix 2. I also grabbed Outrun 2 when I bought it, just for the hell of it. And I'm pretty sure that I still play O2 the most out of all my XBox games.

Speaking of which, it's freaking high time for a Sega arcade racers compilation with arcade ports of games like Rad Mobile (Gale Racer on the Saturn was BS compared to just porting the arcade version), Daytona USA, Daytona 2, Sega Super GT / SCUD Race, MANX TT SuperBike, Virtua Racing (no matter how good the enhanced version 3DAges released was, I still want the original arcade version as well) etc. with online multiplayer. Imagine how badass it would be to play arcade perfect recreations of those games with today's online technology. Daytona USA on the DC was great but there was too much SegaNet lag which screwed up your overall ranking.

Where did it say the gents at Sumo are being hush hush? It would be great to get an Xbox version. O2 was born on chihiro, it's only fitting that this version comes to Xbox.
As for past Sega stuff, it's time for Model 1, 2, and 3 comps. All polygon perfect. No frame issues, no nothing. Super GT is the best racer that never made it home. it's still beautiful. I demand it, Sega must listen!

I'm just glad the console versions are seemingly coming out the same day. I'll go with the Xbox version, and maybe get the PS2 version later if it's playable on the PS3 while the Xbox version isn't compatible with the 360. Custom soundtrack support is reason enough to get the Xbox version, as I'll be able to have all sorts of classic Sega songs playing while I go through the game.

Picked up the PSP version tonight. Firstly, it looks incredible (for a PSP game). There are plenty of modes, unlockables, and the new tracks are really good.
The only downside it would seem (and for once it isn't the PSP controls), is the framerate. Less than impressive and it DOES impact upon gameplay.
Not enough not to make this not worth buying for the PSP, if it is your platform of choice, but enough to make you wonder why they didn't tone the graphics down.
Looking forward to clocking up some OutRun miles :D

Hmm, this is what I've been hearing from multiple people. Hopefully it's not too bad. I'll find out in a few days when my copy gets to me, I guess.
And apparently they goofed up the control settings in the XBox version so you can't properly map the gear paddles on the Logitech wheel. The best you can manage is the left paddle shifting up, and the right paddle shifting down. ;_;
It's kind of sounding like this has just as many little bugs and nitpicks as XBox Outrun 2, and that has me worried quite frankly. Hopefully I turn out to be wrong, because I've been pissing my pants waiting for this game since like July.

The framerate may drop to single digits at times, under 20s at others, very rarely 40-60.

Which would explain the lack of any videos at all of the PSP version.
It only looks marginally better than Ridge Racer at times, and is a third or a quarter of the framerate. It is the damn traffic.
Not the best trade off.

The European console versions are out now, and thus my PSP copy of the game is making its trek across the Atlantic as we speak. I ordered from http://shop.game.net if you're curious. It's a good $60 US with the exchange rate and shipping, but hopefully it'll have been well worth it. I'll be picking it up for XBox and PS2 when it comes out here. And I doubt I'll get the PC version any time soon, because there's no way in hell it'll run on a 450 MHz P2 with an 8 MB video card. Ha ha.

I wonder why Europe always gets everything before we do? The US is always last in line, unless it's a worldwide or US release. And then there's alot of PC games that we never even get here. I could go broke trying to get all the cool PC games that never made it across the Atlantic. I understand Japan getting everything first, and not sending alot of stuff over here, but why on earth do we not get everything that the UK gets? We speak English too, dammit! I know the US isn't a good market for European sports games, but why deny us any of the other stuff? It doesn't make any sense. And worse yet, it's nearly impossible to find a UK seller who will ship European software to the US. I don't understand that either. Amazon.com says it's Amazon.uk's fault, and Amazon.uk says it's Amazon.com's fault. I don't really care whose fault it is, I just want the problem fixed!
I know it works both ways, and there's alot of pissed off gamers in the UK who can't get alot of American releases, but I don't believe that's right either. Our cultures are not that different. So why do developers on both sides of the Atlantic keep on playing these games of cat and mouse with us? You can have this, but not that. We'll let you have this, but we're getting it first. It's all bullshit. Just release everything everywhere simultaneously for God's sake. It can't be that hard to do. And if you don't want to release a certain title in a certain region for some reason, at least make it easy for people in the forbidden zones to import it. I just don't understand all this bullshit of the "haves" trying to play keep-away from the "have nots". It's fucking evil. Just release the damned games and sell them to whoever wants them! Why do they not want to increase their sales?

Okay, I just got the PSP version yesterday, and while I'm enjoying the game a great deal, the frame rate does get pretty awful even in the presence of traffic that could barely even clog a one lane dirt road. Control is pretty tricky, though I'm getting by, thanks to my pathologically excessive play time with Outrun 2. But combining Outrun 2's demanding speed and handling with a d-pad and nearly useless analog nub does not make a very friendly environment for beginners. You may want to stay away from this one until you've had ample practice on a console version, otherwise you'll just get frustrated trying to learn the physics of the game with sub-optimal inputs. Current fans of the game should eat this right up, though, since it looks and plays great aside from those slight issues.

Microsoft has them as exclusives in the United States. That's why Colin McRae 04 and Colin McRae 2005 never saw US releases outside of the Xbox versions.
European PS2 owners didn't get them first, since they were never intended for US release.
What I wish we'd see is for Sony to bring over their first party WRC titles (We only saw the original), and their F1 line now that they have the exclusive F1 license. And Richard Burns Rally better come out for the Xbox over here sometime.

April 25, I think. As far as I know, the home versions are essentially the same, save for graphical differences, and some of the missions being retooled for the PSP version. The XBox port also has custom soundtrack support, so I'm told.

Yup, I've played a bit of the PSP version online. It's been tough to find matches these past few weeks, as I suspect everyone's been too busy playing the PS2 and XBox versions, but the matches I've had seemed to run well. The frame rate is noticeably more choppy, though. Lag didn't seem as bad as it was Outrun 2, which is definitely good. Hopefully I'll have more people to play with now that it's out here in the US.

Still no sign of a Xbox version anywhere, which is what I also really want. Wal-Mart is the only retailer I've seen with it listed, but they have all three versions still listed as coming soon when you do a search (Though it says in stock on their respective pages, wonder which is correct? :))

Man, unless there's some kind of widespread shipping issues, the XBox version is looking like it'll end up being a considerable rarity. I'd say order now while you've got the chance, just to be on the safe side. If you get desperate, and absolutely can't find it anywhere, I've heard the European version is completely region free, and works fine in a US XBox.

I received my XBox copy of the game from amazon.com today and I am very pleased. It does exist and EB/GameStop are a$$holes for not carrying it. I have unfortunately never played the arcade version of SP, but I played the first XBox game to death and have been having a ball with the PS2 version of Coast to Coast. Can't say the same for the PSP version, but that's a different story.
I had already done a side by side of the Outrun 2 easy course on PS2 version vs. the XBox Outrun 2 before getting my copy today. The result of comparing the new XBox conversion of Coast to Coast with the PS2 version yields the same result: This game is meant to run on XBox, but the PS2 version is a PS2 Resident Evil 4-level graphic achievement. Sumo Digital is to be even further praised.
In terms of specifics, in my short comparison this afternoon, the XBox version has more geometry, cleaner textures, much less aliasing (a given), very little slowdown and infinitely better particle and fogging effects. There are generally more clouds, better water, more reflection and better lighting effects. In other words, it is as good as the first conversion as expected. I don't know why I feared that the XBox version would be a slightly nicer version of the new PS2 engine. To go on, it has a more muted gamma level at the same settings, though the road textures remain crisper. The car also seems to be a little closer to the camera as well. Control is near identical, but the XBox controller has the edge for driving games in general. Modes appear to be totally identical.
The PS2 game is still an excellent port and is a near-arcade experience as well. It is well worth it if you don't have an XBox. I saw on another board somewhere that the sun in the first SP stage of the PS2 version is omnipresent, while it is absent in the XBox version. This is indeed true, but I am unsure which is more like the arcade version (probably PS2). There are significantly fewer cloud layers in stages like Lost City and the gradients between layers of overall mist are plainly visible. At one point it looks like there is a giant translucent polygon floating in the sky as you round a corner. The game also has a brighter, almost washed out look, but that really is picking nits. It is pretty amazing actually.
When all is said and done, OutRun 2006 Coast to Coast is still the best arcade racer around. The experience is just a little less breathtaking on the PS2.

I just got my copy of the XBox version today. It's nice and pretty, but the contrast seems a bit high, causing the aliasing to look worse. If you plan to use the Logitech wheel, you will have to rewire it to swap the gear levers, which is fairly easy to do if you're handy with a soldering iron.
Sadly, it looks like the game's rarity combined with needing a Live subscription will keep the number of online players very small. The multiplayer ranking chart looked like it had maybe 1/4 the number of people that I've seen on the PS2 version's board.

This one really sucks for extras. I thought they'd at least keep the original Outrun as a unlockable and the bonus tracks from Outrun 2, and give us Turbo Outrun (I assume Outrun was running under emulation which would've made Turbo Outrun easy to do). But we actually didn't even get what we already had, so keep your copy of Outrun 2 around if you liked the 1986 original and the bonus tracks.

klausien, I enjoyed reading your comparion between the Xbox and PS2 versions. However, I have noticed on the PS2 version right away that the game graphics look slightly squished, as if going from the Xbox to the PS2, everything looks slightly taller than they should be (like circles looking like ovals instead of true circles). This is kind of like KOF 95 on the Saturn having that slightly squished look from the arcade version. Otherwise, I am pleasingly surprised by how the PS2 version has turned out.

I had that covered before i even got "Outrun 2". The Saturn version of "Outrun" is nice and (IMO) the best home version out there.
I'm really quite sad and severely pissed that this version doesn't contain "Turbo" as its heavily influenced by it and there are no arcade perfect home conversions of "Turbo".

I was really hoping for Turbo Outrun as well, since I haven't played it in probably 15 years. Was hoping to see Outrunners as well. Combined with the original Outrun, we'd of had a complete arcade Outrun collection.
Sadly Sega doesn't seem to really care about it's heritage outside of Outrun (The 1986 arcade original), Afterburner, Space Harrier, Super Hang On, and the Sonic series.

Finally arrived yesterday, I'm pretty pleased so far.
But I do have some minor complaints. The menus are confusing. Like how do I play the original Outrun 2 arcade game? Found Outrun 2 but theres no endings (I think I found the SP arcade game and there are endings there), only get the option to restart or exit.
And once I got a load screen before the ending started in the SP game?
And how come I can't enter my high score initials, it automatically puts my profile name in? Not that it's likely to ever be any different unless a friend plays it when someones over here, but I still liked the arcade feel of entering in my own initials (I even do it on the Sega Arcade Gallery GBA Outrun even though I know they're gone as soon as I shut the system down :)).
And I don't like slip streaming. Keep the drafting to NASCAR games, doesn't need to be in Outrun in my opinion, especially off cars going 100mph slower 2 miles down the road from me!
davidbrit2
05-06-2006, 04:58 PM
The only original arcade game that's included is Outrun 2 SP, which also contains the courses from Outrun 2. Once you select your car, hit Y at the mode select menu to switch to the Outrun 2 course. Then you can do the same at the music select menu to get the 7 original songs.

Most of the issues are simply cosmetic ones that give the game a rather unpolished feel in places - for example, the Nationality score boards on the PS2 and PSP being completely non-functional. None of it really affects the gameplay, except for the occasional camera weirdness, and the Turbo Outrun music having to fade out and recue (my biggest gripe).

Should i ever hope to see an F-14 fly over?

Yup, the stuff that flies over on the connectors is largely based on how well you do. For time attack in SP mode, if you're significantly ahead of the ghost, you might see the UFOs fly over. If you're just a tiny bit behind, you might see the jet from Afterburner. If you play Outrun mode and don't touch ANYTHING (including sand) for the first stage, you'll get a dragon flyby. If you can pull it off for the next statge too, you'll see... well, I won't spoil the fun. :-) I think if you can accomplish the same task on later stages, then you get a couple of pegasus. There's a bug in the XBox version, though, and the galloping sound will keep going until you finish the race unless you quickly pause and unpause.
Overall, it's a nice touch, and very reminiscent of older arcade games that would give you different end-of-stage animations or graphics based on how well you did.

It's extremely dead. The online multiplayer ranking table has barely 200 people on it last I checked. The PS2 and PSP versions both have at least 10 times as many. :/ The fact that it's so damned rare likely isn't helping any.

Correct. And from what I've heard, Fry's is just about the only retail "chain" carrying the game. I've seen it at Blockbuster, but only for rent - they didn't have any explicitly for sale.

We may be seeing another Final Fight Guy-type situation at some point if the print run was low. Should at least keep some value outside of the fact that it is a great game.

I cannot seem to find any pictures online of the tuned cars from the game.
I can find more info about which game shows more of Clarissa's cleavage than i can of aquiring pictures of the cars.

I plan to probably play with Live games tonight, your gamertag is Beat You 4Ever? Or have you sent me a friends request? Haven't logged on to Live recently, been playing Super Mario 64 DS trying to get all the stars the past couple weeks and have been ignoring my Xbox.

Well if Amazon.com can be believed, the PC version was finally released on the 27th, but none of the stores that I tried in my area had it yet. (Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, Comp USA, WalMart, and two different GameStops!) So I ordered it from Amazon, but they said that it will be a week or two before it ships, and then another week or two after that before it finally arrives! So hopefully it will get here alot faster than that, but it seems that the PC version is gonna be as limited as the XBOX version apparently was as well.
Looks like the PSP and PS2 versions are the only versions being released in sufficient quantities. I guess that also explains why the PS2 and PSP versions have unlockable cars that can only be accessed through each other too. They seem to be the only two versions found fairly easily.

YAY! It came yesterday! So I can spend today playing it!
Cool story about how it arrived:
I was chatting in a chat room (no not in vbender) and someone called AgressorSEGA entered the room. So I did the Sega scream (SEGA!) and then I yelled "Sonic BOOM!" Just then UPS pulled up and delivered OutRun 2006...
Now how cool is that?
Anyhow, I love the variety of cars so far! Very cool rides!
