View Full Version : Questions for Companies at E3

DP has a huge team going this year. Let's put our resources at your disposal!
What do you want to ask the companies exhibiting at E3 this year?
The team here can compile your questions with ours, then divvy 'em up and attack! It's good for us to have questions too - sometimes only interested parties with good questions get the goodies that are "behind the kiosks".
Post the company name and the question here, I'll compile them into a single list.

Ask the Overloaded guys if Xyanide for Xbox has any actual release date yet.
Ask SNK's people when Battle Colosseum is coming out, and if there's any plans for a home port yet. While you're at it, I'd like to know if they have any excuse for Sam Sho Special not coming to any home systems.
Finally, ask Bungie what it'll take to get Durga into Halo 3 :P I hear the actress who played her is supposed to be going, but why not push the issue?

I'd like to know if anything in the development process at Squeenix has really changed since the companies merged. You know, whether they do a lot of collaboration now or if it's sort of still two separate entities, just under the same title.

Things I'd love to know:
Does konami have any plans to release Ganbare Goemon DS in the US?
What games are in Capcom's Mega Man X collection and Capcom Classics Collection, and If they are indeed coming to the US.
If these questions could be answered, I'd be eternally grateful!!! :D

Before I leave, I'll compile this list, and print it to take with us. Between the list, and Achi reminding me I have the list, I should be able to answer every question, as long as I find the company.

From link with numbers:
so I was wondering if someone could go to Conspiracy Games' booth (If they even have one) and ask then if they're still translating Phanatsy Star Trilogy. I know a few people who share my concerns on several MB's, so your efforts will be appreaciated even outside DP.
From Aussie2B:
Someone should also see if Natsume is still going to release Chulip in the US.
From Cryomancer:
I agree on the Phantasy Star request, and my girlfriend would be sure to suggest asking about Harvest Moon for Girls while you're at the Natsume booth.

Rockstar had some good sales and rentals for Red Dead Revolver, ask them if they have any more western style games planned after those kinds of numbers.
:( It's a pity Red Dead Revolver sucked so bad, but I think that style of game would have a strong following if it had a more open-ended format such as GTA OR didn't include a vanishing clown  .

To All Companies:
As for all those sweet freebie goodies that you see people selling on eBay after E3.....
After that:
....Get a box, package them, and send it out to me...I'll pay shipping (and, if you bring it back to New Jersey before shipping, the cost to ship to PA will be really cheap) :)
But, other than that, try and get any info you can about the Next Xbox from the guys at Microsoft's Stand

Please ask Sega why they won't rerelease Rez.
Also ask Sega if their MMORPG Shenmue game will ever make it to the US.
Ask EA if they'd ever think of making an updated Rampart (I'm not even sure if they'd be the company to ask)
And I guess this last question could be asked to any company: What next-gen console are you most excited to develop for?

I just thought of two more:
Ask Konami If they have any plans to make a Suikoden 5.
Ask Midway if they plan to publish Shadow Hearts: From the New World in the US. If not, try to see if anyone else will be picking it up.
And here's yet another three:
Ask Koei if they will ever make a sequel to Gitaroo-man. Tell them there's a first-born male child in it for them if they do. LOL
Ask Square-enix if they have any plans to continue the Chrono series.
Ask nintendo if they're ever going to bring Mother 1+2 to the USA, and if Mother 3 will be released in the USA too, If it ever actually comes out.
Thanks! :D

Okay, maybe not that one. But do ask about MGS4. :D (Though they'll probably be making an announcement anyway)

I'd presume that they'd be going as press.
I'd like to know what Majesco is doing to preserve the Age of Empires 2 name during the transition to Nintendo DS.

Sega - First and foremost if there is a Daytona USA 3 in the works. When I was still heavily involved in the industry I remember seeing XBox TBA release dates for the first three years of the console life span and at the bottom of every list was Daytona 3 by Sega. We were eternally thankful for the lovingly crafted rework and celebration of this modern classic that the Dreamcast release of Daytona USA in 2001 was.
Square Enix - Are they going to do anything with Illusion of Gaia? This was an Enix release on the SNES and was the second in a series of three unrelated games built on the same basic gameplay engine: SoulBlazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma (never released in the US). Illusion of Gaia is my all time favorite game and it would be awesome to see a GBA port as it was terribly underrated. Then again, that's what happens when Nintendo hypes a game as the "next" Legend of Zelda...
Namco - What's in store next for the Ridge Racer franchise? After Ridge Racer 6 became the horrible and broken R: Racing Evolution it seemed all was lost until Ridge Racer / Ridge Racers on the PSP. Are they planning anything special later down the line? A Sony console launch (hint - PS3) just isn't complete without a new Ridge Racer game.
Conspiracy Games / Sega - Any more of the SegaAges2500 series remakes by 3DAges slated for the US market? Make sure to let them know how much we love Sega Classics Collection and the amount of anticipation we have for the Phantasy Star Collection!
Lastly anything about where the Lunar series is going from anyone that could tell you would be nice. :)
Thanks for giving the community this chance, I haven't been to E3 since 1999.

Ubisoft- Are there plans to ever make the sequals to Beyon Good and Evil? If not please do.
Tecmo- When will the next Fatal Frame come out?
Will Tecmo Hit Parade come out in the US?
Nokia- When will you make a top down shooter for the N-Gage? Why else did you make it with a vertical screen?

and try to keep a serious face.

Microsoft - When are Rallisport Challenge 2 & Crimson Skies 2 coming out for the PC, and if they have no plans to port these over to the PC, why not? Rallisport Challenge is still the best rally racing game ever released for the PC in the US, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the sequel on the PC! And as for Crimson Skies 2, why was it released on XBOX before the PC, when the original game was a PC game? It should've come out for the PC first, or at least at the same time as XBOX! So ask them if they're just gonna keep neglecting us PC gamers like this, and tell them that most PC gamers are never gonna buy an XBOX, because we see it as just a cheap underpowered PC! That's all it is! See what they say. Oh yeah, and ask them why the hell they chose to cancel Microsoft Train Simulator 2 for the PC! No interest in it my ass! Every single owner of MSTS in the world was looking forward to that game! They need to release it!
Ubisoft - Will you PLEASE port Monster 4X4: Masters of Metal to the PC? Yes, we know that the previous game, Monster Jam, sold horribly on the PC, but that was because it SUCKED! This game is much better, and monster truck fans haven't even been given a sucky new monster truck game to play on the PC ever since Monster Jam! We need this game released on the PC! There hasn't been a decent one on the PC since Monster Truck Madness!
Iridon - If Monster Truck Fury has indeed been released for the PC, as your website claims it has, then where the hell was it released? We want this game released here in the USA, we were expecting it to be published by ValuSoft, who published the previous game, Monster Truck Rumble, and we're getting really tired of searching for needles in haystacks every time you claim that you've released a new game for the PC! No stores that sell PC games ever know anything about your alleged releases for the PC, DAMMIT!
Atari - Will Test Drive: Eve of Destruction ever be released for the PC, and if not, why not? Every other Test Drive game in the series has always been released on the PC, and usually before any other platforms, or at least about the same time! Don't neglect your loyal PC gaming fanbase the same way that Microsoft has! We're not gonna buy a PS2 either, so please stop it with all the console only games already and release these games for the PC too! Also, please stop rushing games that are obviously not ready for release, just so you can meet a holiday deadline! Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 was a disaster, thanks to you rushing it, and we're very tired of your collossal screwups! Stop trying to be like EA, and for God's sake, allow public beta testing for your high profile titles like RCT3! All that game needed was some testers to find all the bugs in it before it was released with a ton of bugs in it! SHEESH!
Encore - Will you PLEASE port GrooveRider: Slot Car Thunder to the PC? We thought that it was gonna be released for the PC too! If not, then why not? This game is begging to be released on the PC, so where the heck is it? You know that it'll most likely sell much better on the PC than on the GC, right?
Empire - THANK YOU for porting FlatOut to the PC for us PC gamers! We can hardly wait! Is it still on schedule for a summer release in June? Great! Now could you please teach all the other developers how to port a PS2 or XBOX game over to the PC, so they'll all get off their lazy butts and stop neglecting the PC gaming segment of the market? We PC gamers want more than just dozens of FPS, RTS, & MMORPG! You obviously know this, so why the hell can't everyone else figure it out too? What is their problem? By the way, will there ever be a sequel to Total Immersion Racing for the PC? We really appreciate you porting that one over to the PC for us too! And speaking of ports, when is Starsky & Hutch 2 coming out? You're gonna port that one over to the PC too, aren't you? Kudos to you for being one of the very few developers in the industry willing to port PS2 & XBOX games to the PC! As far as we can tell, you're the only developer/publisher still doing this on a regular basis, and we hope you never abandon us like everyone else did!
SimBin - When is GTR gonna be released in the USA? Is it still on schedule for a summer release in June? We really can't wait for this one! But why was it released in Europe first? We thought that it was gonna be simultaneously released worldwide! Just don't let all of us US GT racing fans down, please!
That's about all that I can think of for now, except please let all the gaming companies know that there are LEGIONS of PC gamers who DON'T GIVE A DAMN about FPS, RTS, & MMORPG, and we're STARVED for their products! Bonk them all on the head really hard, and make them all write "We WILL port our best games to the PC" 1000 times! Take a doghouse with you and put them in it too! (Except for Empire, they can stay out of the doghouse!)
Seriously, anything that you can do to convince the industry that alot of us PC gamers are SICK AND TIRED of nothing but FPS, RTS, & MMORPG being released for our platform, while every other genre is being neglected and only released on the consoles with very few exceptions would be greatly appreciated! Tell them that we're NOT gonna buy any of the consoles just so we can play a few exclusive games that COULD and SHOULD be done much better on the PC, and that applies to CURRENT and FUTURE consoles! Alot of us are simply NOT gonna invest in any consoles just for playing games when we have perfectly good $3000 PC's that can run rings around them all! So why the heck are they all NEGLECTING us and our $3000 gaming rigs?
Oh yeah, and please keep an eye out for any new PC games that AREN'T an FPS, RTS, or MMORPG for us! Also, get all the information that you can on expansion packs for RCT3! Especially the new waterpark expansion that's due for release in June! But tell Atari DON'T RUSH IT, NO MATTER WHAT! Squirt them with waterguns, until they're soaking wet, and tell them that's their punishment for rushing RCT3 and screwing it up royal in the process!

Konami, ask them if they are going to make another PS2 DDR game. It would have to be an original game, and as long as it isnt made by Konami of Hawaaii, thats cool. Are there any plans to release a US version of Guitar Freaks/Drum Mania, Beatmania, or any of the other music games? They are really starting to take off with things like Taiko, Donkey Konga, and it would be nice to see some of what these all got inspiration from make a real US release.
Namco, ask them if they are going to release any more Taiko games, because I would hate for them to only have one game use that drum. Also, if they are going to release any more lightgun games, because they seem to be the only company still in that market, and I love em for that.

In regards to Suikoden, please bludgeon Konami with something blunt until they make it 2D again.
Okay, maybe not that one. But do ask about MGS4. :D (Though they'll probably be making an announcement anyway)
They didn't, but Hideo Kojima did. The subtitle was "Hide No More" or something along those lines, and Hideo joked calling "Hideop No More" because he's not working on it.
I googled Digitpress.com the other day, and found that DigitPress was a large provider of imaged for E3girls.com ... and apparently the Tecmo girls were the favorite.
So ask them to lift their bikini tops....please....

Conspiracy - Ask about Phantasy Star Collection...and tell them I want it bad, and I'll be cranky if it doesn't come out
Konami - Ask them about the rights to Policenauts and if they would allow a third party to pulbish a Saturn version in English in the near future...and how to get ahold of the right people to talk to...phone numbers, etc. And will you be doing the next Ys game as well?
Atlus - Thank them for really catering to the fans with all their great feedback and site, and ask them what they've got on the burner, and why the heck it's so hard to find Choro Q. Also bug them for freebies and ask them why you can't buy more T-shirts and posters from their online store.
Interplay - Ask why they haven't made a new friggin' Rock N' Roll Racing game!
Sega - Ask them when they're gonna make and etc:
A sequel to Panzer Dragoon Orta
A sequel to Nights into Dreams
A bloody REAL Shining game
A straight offline heavy story Phantasy Star game (I know...Universe...*sigh*
What caliber of ammo Shadow uses (bet they're Black Talons!)
If Virtua Cop 3 is coming to a console!!!!!!!
Capcom - Where are my updates for D&D (CPS2), Warriors of Fate, Aliens Vs. Predator, and all the other great beat em ups that should be 3D! Make more 3D beat em ups!
Hasbro Interactive/Infogrames/Microprose - IS the X-Com license dead forever or will there someday be another GOOD strategy X-Com? And if you're not going to use it, will the rights be available for sale?
Irrational Games/Lookingglass Studios - More Thief and System Shock!
Aruze - Keep up the kick ass games!
That's all I can think of...

Microsoft- What serious plans is the company making to listen gamers who are not being paid by them?
Nintendo- Ask them if anyone there knows that people that are older than 13 want to purchase their first party products(other than the new Zelda). Ask them if they like what happend to Sega and what they are doing as a company to not follow in thier footsteps.
EA- Ask them what they are doing new for future football games that they have not done in the past seasons that is justification for a full priced $50 game, other than a roster upgrade? Also ask them when we are expect the third death star?

Nintendo - Are they going to be releasing any NES compilations much like how Capcom and Midway are doing? And also, I would like to know if they are going to be doing this, are they going to put it on the Gamecube instead of being on Gameboy?
Spike (hopefully they will be there)- I would like to know if they are going to be releasing any new wrestling games.
Agetec - Are they going to be bringing over another RPG Maker to the U.S?
THQ - Are there any plans on making a Legends of Wrestling game? Seeing as how Acclaim is gone and THQ is still putting legendary wrestlers in their WWE games, I was wondering if they could possibly make an entire game series that is based off of the Legends of Wrestling.
Lucas Arts - Will there be another Indiana Jones game for the PS2 or maybe even Gamecube? I loved Emperor's Tomb, but I want more. :)
That is all I can think of at the moment. Thanks for taking our questions :)

"SimBin - When is GTR gonna be released in the USA? Is it still on schedule for a summer release in June? We really can't wait for this one! But why was it released in Europe first? We thought that it was gonna be simultaneously released worldwide! Just don't let all of us US GT racing fans down, please!"
Very doubtful I'm afraid. I can't legally say anything more. Import the UK version, that's what everyone including myself is doing. :)
"so I was wondering if someone could go to Conspiracy Games' booth (If they even have one) and ask then if they're still translating Phanatsy Star Trilogy.
Conspiracy Games / Sega - Any more of the SegaAges2500 series remakes by 3DAges slated for the US market? Make sure to let them know how much we love Sega Classics Collection and the amount of anticipation we have for the Phantasy Star Collection!"
The deal with Conspiracy died a year ago. They didn't play a role in the current Sega Classics Collection (Sega took everything back and bundled it together and did a US release by themselves). Same with Phantasy Star Collection. Ask Sega, Conspiracy isn't involved anymore besides preliminary work that happened quite a while ago.

For my question, ask Atari/Infogrames for information about the upcoming Flashback 2 console that is using a real 2600 on a chip.
Slated for a summer release, imagine they will be revealing information at E3, such as a game list and such.

ID
- Will there be a DOOM IV (4)
I can answer this one now: no.
In a recent edition of Icons, Carmack himself stated that ID is moving into a new franchise - something he had wanted to do before Doom 3 development began but didn't get off the ground (sounded like internal conflict over this decision). He didn't say there would NEVER be a Doom IV, but it's not on their radar anytime in the near future.
Port, you can add this to your list if you want to get the official quote on this, but I'd make it a low priority.

Hmm...I updated the 2nd post I made with a few new questions, and it seems they were overlooked, so I'll just repost them here:
Ask Koei if they will ever make a sequel to Gitaroo-man. Tell them there's a first-born male child in it for them if they do. Laughing
Ask Square-enix if they have any plans to continue the Chrono series.
Ask nintendo if they're ever going to bring Mother 1+2 to the USA, and if Mother 3 will be released in the USA too, If it ever actually comes out.
Sorry for reposting them, but I just want to make sure that they're added to the master list. Thanks again for answering these, and I'm really sorry about asking so much!

"MS Train Simulator was canceled because?"
Because MS and the developer came to odds, and the half finished MS Train Simulator II was cancelled when they desolved the relationship.
"Simbin: GTR release date for the PC?"
I don't think Simbin will be attending. They're aiming their products at the European market (GTR PC, GTR for the Xbox, and GTLegends for the PC).
"Conspiracy Games: If they're still translating Phanatsy Star Trilogy"
They're not involved in the project anymore, might be better to ask Sega that. I doubt Conspiracy will even attend, they're in a horrible financial situation and have basically been idle for months.

I see Ganbare Goemon for the DS has been asked about, but considering my recent Goemon craze, I have a somewhat similar question to ask...
Konami, will you guys translate and port any Goemon games from the past? For Sega-Ask if there's any plans at all for Comix Zone, Jet Set Radio, and (probably useless but) Eternal Champions in the future? Also if they are planning to start putting out Smash Packs again? Really loved the Dreamcast one, and would like to see it continue.
For Namco- besides putting in another vote for me for a US Namco X Capcom, tell them I need for more Breakdown.
For Oddworld Inhabitants-ask if their new game called Fangus is still coming out. I heard that they are closing their game studio down and focusing on TV and Movies. There wasn't any mention of the fate of the new game in the article.

A *lot* of these questions are no-brainers (as if Konami isn't working on MGS4?) or fanboy fantasies (as if Konami would allow a third party to translate and release Policenauts?), but you can cross these ones off the list:
More Taiko type games?
Taiko Drum Master tanked in the States. Ain't no more coming here.
Working Designs: Lunar series? Radiant Silvergun in the US perhaps?
Ubisoft currently owns the rights to the Lunar franchise, not WD.
Tecmo: What about Tecmo Hit Parade in the US?
Yep, it's coming here.
LucasArts: Whats next for the Ballblazer franchise? How about a new Indiana Jones game? Sam & MAx 2 PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
LucasArts canceled Sam & Max 2 (and Full Throttle 2).
Atlus: Why low production run of ChoroQ?
Because it was a quirky Japanese game in a series that has never done particularly well in the States.
Agetec: A new RPG maker in the US?
RPG Maker 3 has been announced for the PS2.

I have to agree with Zach. Just looking at the list I think we could chop about half of the questions right out, and streamline it into a more 'proffesional' and serious list.
I DO have a question myself for Konami, though -- PLEASE port MGS 3 to the XBox or 360! :D

Zach, in fairness, I'm going to ask all of these anyway. I know that you are on the pulse here, but it won't hurt to ask the developer for the hell of it.

OK, I have another one, but it's not so much a question as something I want TOLD to the Namco rep.
First remind them that Tales of Symphonia sold over 250,000 copies in america, then proceed to tell them that the Tales of Rebirth review on RPGFan.com got over 10,000 views, more than any other review this year, including DQ8 and Musashi, and that it was a positively glowing review, and wrap it up by telling them that this proves that the US wants more tales games (Like ToR,) so why can't we have ToR AND ToL?

Yeah, like one week after I posted the question the news of Agetec bringing over RPG Maker 3 came out. :P
The same is with my question for Spike. About one or two weeks after I posted the question for them asking if they will be bringing out another wrestling game of any kind. Then, they release information about bringing out another Fire Prowrestling game this summer. :D

I'm just sayin' that time is very precious at E3, and that publishers and developers usually don't want to be asked questions to which the answers are obvious.
Not that you'll be talking to many developers at E3, anyway. You'll mostly get PR peeps who don't have the knowledge or authority to answer the questions on this list--at least, the questions that won't be publicly answered with press releases during the show.
I'm not trying to be negative, but it's important to remember that E3 is all about glitz and hype. It's not a place for hardcore gamers to ask serious questions, or expect thoughtful answers.

Well, I'm sure half the questions will be answered by my touring of the show. Hell, most of these questions are 'Is X game or X sequel coming up the pike or not?'. Most major company questions are 'You know every popular franchise you have or had? Are you going to do anything with it'. Hell, Sega has 18 of these questions alone. I plan to phrase each batch of questions as 'my readers submitted a few questions for your company, a minute of your time to answer them'. I don't think that's unreasonable or something a PR rep would turn down.
And if you count some of these questions as thoughtful or serious, then maybe you didn't read the entire list? ;) I obviously won't ask a question I have an answer for... and I probably won't ask these questions until Thursday at the earliest. (Achi and I will be too busy grabbing everything in sight, you know)

What are the plans for the Pokemon franchise, especially in terms of the promotional items that you can download to your cartridge (Aurora Ticket, Mystic Ticket, etc.)? Any plans to distribute these widely at a future date?

Well, I know that a few of mine have been answered already, and they were good answers :D
1. I asked if Lucas Arts was planning on bringing out a new Indiana Jones game and they indeed are :D
2. I asked if Agetec was going to be bringing out a new RPG Maker, and the information came out a couple of weeks ago :D
3. I asked if Spike was going to be making any new wrestling games and a couple of weeks ago they announced that they were going to be working on a brand new Fire Prowrestling title :D
4. I asked if Nintendo was going to be releasing any of their NES classics onto a collection for the Gamecube and then they announce that with the Revolution you will be able to download supposedly every NES, SNES, and N64 game ever. So...I think my question was answered in a BIG way there :D
This has been a good E3 for me

Well, I looked into it and found an answer to my own Chulip question. Turns out it hasn't been scrapped. Natsume showed it at E3, and they gave it a new release date of Q4 2005. A long wait compared to the original January release date, but better than nothing.
They say the reason for the delay is that they want an "awesome translation", which is understandable since it doesn't seem like the kind of game that would be easy to translate (which is the main reason why I'd prefer to play it in English; it seems like the type of game that really benefits from understanding the text).
However, there is also talk that they're giving the American version brand new graphics to localize it better for the US market. They're saying that some of the content isn't right for the US market, which contradicts their earlier statement that they would absolutely not make changes to the game to reflect the cultural differences between Japan and the US. A lot of gamers are taking this as if they're sterilizing the game for a US audience, considering it does has a lot of content that the US will see as risque.
This is Natsume we're talking about, though, so I have faith that it'll be a good, accurate localization without too much in the line of Americanizing, toning down, and censoring.

Natsume: Harvest Moon for Girls?
If you mean "for girls" as in "you play as a girl" then More Friends of Mineral Town (GBA) and Another Wonderful Life (GCN)
Squeenix: Dragon Quest 8
Yes its coming, the had an involved and elaborate demo at the show.
Working Designs: All questions
They were a no show. Wave goodbye, boys and girls.
SNK: Sam Sho V US? KOF 95-99
Not sure. Both were there on demo, but I forgot to ask. Take it with a grain of salt though...they were also demo-ing the Twinkle Star Sprites PS2 game that they said would not be coming out here.
Nintendo: Revolution controllers, wired or wifi
Wifi
Crave: More Pinball Hall of Fame packs?
Doubtful so far
Sega: Rerelase for Rez? new REAL Shining game
Rez got canned :(
Shining Force Neo was on demo....not sure what you mean by real though...
Koei: Sequel to Gitaroo Man?
No, but an improptu petition to create a sequel WAS started. I was about the 5th person to sign it :D

Isn't there a Harvest Moon game(s?) where you play as a girl and look for a husband? I'm guessing that's what the question was in regards to. And I'm also guessing the US will never see it, or the Tokimeki Memorial games for girls, or basically any kind of game where you play a girl and try to get a man... :/

Natsume is shipping both Another Wonderful Life and More Friends of Mineral Town in North America. Harvest Moon is Natsume's bread-and-butter franchise, y'know. They're putting "From the Creators of Harvest Moon" on all their non-HM stuff now.

Claimed to :/
No major site updates in well over a year.
No mention of a specific project since the fabled Goemon Collection in August 2002.
Extreme delays regarding the release of their last project, Growlanser Generations (9 moths!).
More than 2.5 years between Arc and Growlanser.
Complete and utter failure to respond to customer service calls. (geez Victor....I know you need the money...let me BUY stuff from you!)
And no official booth at E3.
I'm surprised he lasted this long.

Ahh...that's probably like asking for an updated Ikari Warriors, if not even more futile. Any game that doesn't have Metal Slug or KoF characters in it doesn't stand a chance with SNK anymore :(

Add "Selling replacement discs on eBay" to your list. :)
And don't misunderstand. I'm as skeptical of his claim as you are, especially given my personal history. But every time I'm convinced it's truly over, he hangs on for another year. I won't believe WD is dead until I see Victor's *house* on eBay.

Ah, okay. I can't claim to be keeping up with the recent Harvest Moon games much (good ol' Harvest Moon 64, along with the older ones I played before it, are enough Harvest Moon for me). I was under the impression that those games allow you to play as a girl but don't specifically cater to a female audience, like the old Game Boy Harvest Moon where you could play a girl but there was no dating aspect to the game or any gender-specific interaction (not that the male character in that game had any either). I'm surprised that they would release the specifically female-targeted Harvest Moon games in the US, seeing as they'll completely alienate the male audience with those titles and males consist of the vast majority of gamers in the US, but seeing as Harvest Moon is an unusual series that attracts many more female players than the typical franchise does, I suppose it makes sense.
