View Full Version : DP Pumpkin Carving Contest - Winner announced on page 5!!

Queen Of The Felines

That's right folks, it's contest time! Halloween is just around the corner and now's the time when the pumpkins get gutted and mutilated and set on fire for our viewing pleasure. While you're busy doing that, why not go the extra mile and enter this new spiffy contest. :D

All you have to do is decorate a pumpkin so it has some sort of video gaming theme. You can carve it, glue stuff to it, paint it, or whatever else you feel like doing. As long as it resembles something related to video games it's all good. Carve Mario's face or the Atari logo in it. Use it as replacement Gamecube case. Create a field of pumpkin Pikmin. Make a giant pumpkin Pikachu. Use a single pumpkin or a dozen, it doesn't matter. Get creative and have fun! :)

Take a picture of your creation and then e-mail it to me at kathara@sbcglobal.net. Entries must be e-mailed to me by 11:59pm Central Time on October 31. Once the deadline passes I will put all entries up on my own server and board members will vote on which one is their favorite (pictures will not be labeled so there will be no way to identify who did what to prevent bias). The one which receives the most votes will be the grand prize winner. In the event of a tie, uh, I'll think of something. You can enter as often as you wish if you REALLY like carving pumpkins. Oh, and by the way, if anybody tries to cheat and use Photoshop you will be disqualified and I will laugh at you.

So what IS the grand prize, you ask? It's a huge box filled with games and goodies from the "survival horror" genre and/or involving monsters in general. A small sample of what will be included is below:

D (PSX)
Silent Hill 4 (PS2)
Resident Evil longbox (PSX)
Dark Fall: The Journal (PC)
Manhunt (PS2)
Countdown Vampires (PSX)
Clock Tower (PSX)
Darkstalkers The Night Warriors longbox (PSX)
Fear Effect (PSX)
Kouldeka (PSX)
Nightmare Creatures (PSX)
Silent Hill 2 (PS2)
Resident Evil (GC)
Shadow of Destiny (PS2)
Clock Tower 3 (PS2)
The Ring: Terror's Realm (DC)
Illbleed (DC)
Resident Evil Outbreak survival kit
Resident Evil wall clock made by Sniderman
Extermination (PS2)
Haunted House (2600 - loose)
Dracula (Genesis)
The Thing (PS2)
Resident Evil Code Veronica X w/bonus Devil May Cry DVD (PS2)
Grabbed by the Ghoulies (XBOX)
Shadowgate (NES)
Ghostbusters (Sega Master System)
Run Like Hell (XBOX)
Blade II (XBOX)
Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick (PS2)
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (PS2)
Carrier (DC)
Zombie Revenge (DC)
Eternal Darkness (GC)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds (XBOX)

If anybody has any questions you can post them here or PM them to me.

Good luck, and start carving! :D

Awesome line up of games. o_o I'm one step ahead too. :) I already have pumpkins carved with video game themes AND I have photos taken of them, so I just gotta scan 'em and I'm good to go. :) I guess great minds think alike. :P

Commence pumpkin carving!

And yes, that is one heck of a prize pack!

Yet another reason why DP is *the* community.

Is there more than one winner?

There may be. It depends how much more stuff I can accumulate this weekend. ;)

It doesn't matter if you don't have artistic talent, try to make something anyway. :)

Btw, PLEASE include "DP contest" or something similar in your subject line so I'll know it's not spam. :)

Not to complain, but I wish you were putting the pictures up as you got them, instead of waiting until after Halloween (which seems so far AWAY!)

Queen Of The Felines

If I put them up when I get them I'm afraid people are going to go "Oh there's no way I'm going to beat that!" and not even bother. The more competition the better, ya know. ;)

I'm so going to do this. But, the only thing is, I'm afraid of most survival horror games. Seriously :eek 2:
But I could use some of those for the collection, and I do like zombies so I'ma enter anyways. Maybe I'll carve this weekend.

Queen Of The Felines

You can enter as many times as you wish, as long as they're different pumpkins of course. :)

Oh, one more thing, every one who votes will have their name put into a drawing for another prize yet to be determined. This way those of you that don't live in the U.S. or those that can't get a pumpkin/don't feel like they have talent can win something too. :)

here's a link to another (non-gaming) pumpkin that I carved, using a pattern.

Don't be sad fellow board members and pumpkin carving enthusiasts. I too was very impressed by the Witches' Brew pumpkin. But, may I remind you, that there are no patterns for video game pumpkins like there are patterns for the traditional Halloween stuff!

Jamie did a stellar job on that pumpkin, but I can only imagine that it's much tougher to create a pumpkin without a pattern.

Basically, what I'm saying is this -

Enter the contest, whether you think you have a chance or not!! You might be suprised as to how well you will do if you try! ;)

punkoffgirl
10-15-2004, 01:29 PM
Heh.. and here's another hint: I found the image I wanted for my vg pumpkin, and created a pattern out of that! It's really easy to do, and you can just free-hand in some other details afterwards. Come on, get in the mood! It's almost HALLOWEEN!

You should consider having the contest run until a week or two after halloween, as pumpkins get damn cheap afterwords, and a lot of us are poor / don't like to spend lots of money, heh. The girlfriend and I shall be entering for sure, though.

To make a punkin worthy of winning will take some time to design and create QoF. I've actually set aside my WEEKEND to do mine. And there may be more than one, depending on my gumption. (I'm old. I have "gumption.")

Still have a week and a half for folks to get it in gear. I'd say you'll see some more punkins this weekend and next Saturday/Sunday as folks race the Oct. 31 deadline.

10-20-2004, 08:41 AM
Yep, I'm currently still in the planning stages on mine - running into some technical issues, and I can't afford to waste money on a bunch of pumpkins.

So planning is key - gotta have a good plan before you can execute the plan!

Thus, I also intend to do mine this weekend.

Alrighty, no more submissions! LET THE VOTING BEGIN! :D

The link to all the pictures is below. All you have to do is pick ONE pumpkin and e-mail it to me at kathara@sbcglobal.net. Please include the entry number and name of the pumpkin you have chosen along with your DP username. (In order to help prevent cheating, you MUST be a registered member. If I get an entry without a user ID included, the vote WILL NOT COUNT.)

Why must you include your username? Well, like I mentioned earlier, everyone who votes will have their names tossed into a hat and one of you will win a package of goodies. Nowhere near as good as what the pumpkin winner will receive, but still not too shabby. :)

You may only vote ONCE and only for ONE pumpkin, and please do NOT try to cheat by creating multiple new user IDs and/or e-mail addresses, ok? And no, you're not allowed to vote for yourself. ;)

Voting ends on Friday, November 5th at 11:59pm central time. And now...

Oh, and if I may make a suggestion?

Until voting ends this Friday, please keep the editorializing and pimping to a minimum.

- Do not post which ones you think "rocks" or "sucks."
- Do not identify which one is yours, if you have an entry.
- Do not try to sway folks to vote for a specific punkin.

We've already got one U.S. voting event that - I assume - will go down the crapper this week. Let's keep THIS voting event on the up-and-up without any asshattery.

Good luck everyone. There are some AWESOME entries. And I'll tell you which ones I think "rocks" sometime this Saturday.

Me too ... and then my wife came home and told me I used one of her "good knives". I never understood that; why do I only get to use the bad stuff?

I take carving the pumpkin seriously. I have gathered a set of tools over the years that work perfectly for me. They also seem to work well for fancy-pantsy food decorations around the "other" holidays. I can't believe she made a watermelon basket with my tools.... @_@ radish roses  apple swans :eek 2:

Where do we vote? I can't tell because Links in this forum have no distinguishing marks to separate them from regular text, so I assume I missed the link. I wanna vote.

Congratulations not only to the winners, but EVERYBODY who entered! Not only did you help out your online community, but you also shared a little bit of retro gaming with every single person who saw your pumpkin!

I thought for sure my Dreamcast pumpkin had a chance until I saw all those other entries. Nice job everyone! Does anyone want to share a story of how they made their pumpkin, or any problems they encountered?

It turns out pumpkins aren't as hollow as I had remembered. I had a hell of a time cramming a dreamcast inside the larger one, and there was no way I could get my little flat screen monitor to fit in the smaller one. I ended up cutting the top off the top pumpkin, to hide the height of the monitor inside the top of the bottom pumpkin. I left a game running in it when we went to trick or treat, so people coming up to the house could see it in the window.

Yay! I knew my pumpkin had no chance of winning, but I'm very surprised that I won the random drawing. :) Congratulations Gamegirl79 for the super-spiffy Castlevania pumpkin, and congratulations to everyone else who is far more creative and talented than I am, haha. :P Looks like the Digital Press gals take this one. ;)

Hehe, I would've loved to see the looks of confusion on their faces.

There's nothing too interesting behind the creation of my Neo Geo logo pumpkin, but yes, that is me holding it in front of my face like an idiot. :P And if anyone is wondering why my face can be seen through the other side, it's because the other face of the logo (the "smiley face") is carved into the other side.

congrats gamegirl!

just so you know, my girlfriend signed on solely to vote(and to enter), though she never did. if she had, youd have won with 10 votes! :)

my stuff wasnt too fantastic, but i had a lot of fun making the katamri pumpkin. the orginal plan was to make it big enough to hold a ps2 and the game case(as well as my cat), but i quickly found out that the stuff wasnt really tight enough to support much weight. after i cut all the strings that held the items on my girlfriend carved a diabolical smiling pumpkin...with strings and nails sticking out of his head...

the nintendo entertainment pumpkin was reversed and a proper jack o lantern carved in it....

#36 pacman with ghosties? ended up on the porch as, well, pacman and ghosties...my girlfriend made that one...like the tie in with the username?

anyway, nice effort by everyone!

Wow. Great entries and a great time! I was planning to do a Resident Evil "leering zombie" punkin, and the DP contest rolled around just as I was designing it. When I finished and lit it, I thought I'd have a chance at the prize -

Until the others arrived. x_x

Anywa, I had a great time. Halloween is my favorite holiday and this year I wanted to carve punkins as a part of it. THis contest gave me that chance, so I thank Kris and Joe for holding it. Looking forward to next year's!

P.S. Two punkins I was planning to do, but ran outta time:
1. The Jack-O-Tari 2600. Was going to cram a TV into big punkin, a 2600 jr into a small, flat punkin, and a joystick into a gourd. Then was gonna take a photo of the set-up running "HAlloween." RAn out of time to do so. (Besides, the Dreamcast punkins would've pounded my idea.

2. "Pong-O-Lanterns"- Was gonna get 5 punkins. CArve a flat POng paddle on two, carve the "ball" on one, and carve two blocky scores on the last two. Was gonna set up some utility shelves in my yard; place the Pong elements where they fit; then string up Christmas lights to identify the screen area and net down the center. At night, it should've looked just like a POng screen. BAiled on the idea because of the time it would've taken, the amount of work to clean/carve 5 punkins, and the minimal reaction a "Pong" set-up would've gotten.

Wait'll next year. Seriously, I had a great time. And these punkins should be archieved on the DP site in a photos album. Cool stuff.

It was my son's idea to do entry #11 for King Boom Boo and Knuckles. It was an amateurish job compared to some of these others but we still had a ball working on it.

I wanted to do a second entry similar to Sniderman's idea using a 2600 Jr. I would have called mine the "Atari 3100" (you know, for the 31st...) and had it running Haunted House. Woulda been cool. Didn't have enough spare time, but there's always next yeat.

Congrats to everybody who entered. Nice work.

Well, I knew mine wouldn't win, once all these terrific entries started rolling in, but I have to say, I was evil and held out hope for a while that no one else would enter and I'd win by default *lol*

Fantastic job on the pumpkins, everyone! Congrats to the winners!

Edit: And I just realized that I forgot to even vote!
