I believe the following list has every U.S. Playstation game released in longbox format...102 total. I tear up a bit every time I see "Return Fire."

One of the greatest multi-player games E-V-E-R. No game has ever inspired as much actual violence amongst my group of friends as "Return Fire" did between 1996 and 1998.

So beautiful.

Why the early switch from long boxes to jewel cases, anyway? Besides the obvious convenience factor.

I'm pretty sure the change from boxes to CD cases was due to price, stores being able to fit more of them into the same spot, and the longboxes not being the best format for 2 CD's.

Remember boxes are the first to go to save money. The first batch of Intellivison games had boxes that opened like books and a window for the game. Then they switched to the open at end style that has been used ever since. And INTV tried to get rid of boxes and instructions all together and just send games in ziplocks with a sheet of instrcutions, but customer complaints caused them to go back to boxes.

Thanks everyone, it was fun to put together, with the exception of the last few months of finding nothing but air on those phantom titles. Most titles I got for between .99 and 4.99 from a really cool Funco manager who would let me check out new longbox arrivals before putting them on the floor...sadly, he no longer works there :( . The last title I got was Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors Dreams...which of course showed up at a local gamestore a few days after the one from Ebay showed up. Probably my best find was a $10 BIN for a Psychic Detective that was mint and complete...never seen that one in the wild. I got about a dozen of these through Ebay, the rest through thrifting, rummaging, used game stores and trading.

Rich

P.S. If there's a longbox Space Hulk (not on any list I've seen so far) out there, show me a photo!

Great feat, BUT do you have the longbox variants???

I know that a Few came in mutiple case styles (Twisted Metal had jewlecase, paper versions I believe) and the cover variant for Wipeout (not to mention the slip cover). There were also NotForSale versions of RidgeRacer and BattleArena Toshinden released too.

Seriously though thats a nice feat with the PS longboxed collection there.

People always complain about how ugly the early polygon games were, but as long as the pop-up isn't too bad I like 'em. They almost have an abstract sort of feel to them and they just scream "video game". Warhawk is one of my favorites from that time period.

Congrats, Rich! I thought I had a Space Hulk longbox to prove you wrong because I thought I had a complete longbox collection. Turns out I didn't have Space Hulk on my list of longbox games, hence I have been in the same situation as you for some time as well.

So we're SURE it doesn't exist now, right? I'm not going to find this game in someone's collection years down the road and have to murder them in cold blood, am I?

As discussed (lightly) in the PSX thread, but more headbashed between Stu and I, a month ago I went completely AWOL on the internet and did some serious digging. Here's the breakdown of information I found, and why the 'display box' theory is holding up:

1. Space Hulk has a release date of September 5th, 1996. Tecmo World Golf, the last true proven Long Box, was released on shelfs July 10th, 1996. Almost 2 months difference between them.

2. There are 15 regular jewel case games that are released inbetween the two of them. Why would they release a long box after so many jewel cases?

3. There has only been only been one confirmed long box sighting, and that was the auction we know about, except it was without a manual.

4. Both Stu and I have Lunar boxes that are the exact retail release, sans barcode. I've seen 3rd Party N64 display boxes that looked 100% like the real deal, but with the POP barcode, not the game barcode. We need a scan of that auction long box, so I can run the barcode through the work PC and see if it rings up. Even then, it could still be just a display.

5. EA re-released several of their long box games as double jewel cases, including Fade to Black, Triple Play 97, NBA Live 96, and Theme Park. It's possible that SH was scheduled for a long box release (and promo'ed as one) but was just tossed into the double jewel case lot at the 11th hour when the others were being re-printed.

So basically, everything comes down to the manual. Unless someone, somewhere, has a long box Space Hulk PSX manual, there is no real concrete evidence outside of the one encounter that we already have documented.

The world may never know.

Great job on the collection. Actually maybe somebody can help me with a longtime question of mine. In my collection, I only get the longbox version of a PS1 game if it was never released in a CD case or if the only CD cased release was GH (I really hate the green spines). Does anybody know which of these longbox games were never released in a CD case?

After rereading my post, I'm beginning to think my collection pushes me around like a bossy lapdog.

Wow, some solid evidence to prove the space hulk. Since i found it in Eugene OR in a pile of PS1 games that were direct from Sony's Plant, it very well could be a promo box.... but wouldn't that make it one damn rare promo box?

Anyways, if it DOES in fact exist, i will find it. If there was one in my town, there has got to be another.

Rich... do you happen to have that picture anymore? If i remembered correctly, the Disc for that one i sold on ebay back in the day was different then any other disc i had seen for the game. Maybe i am trippin' but i could have sworn the disc was different.

I think in actuality... it makes it a promo box. MOST (not all) but MOST of the time, those are rare to some sense as they arnt general public releases and unless you gaffled one from a game store then how do we really get one? My Promo box for Arc The Lad (which is a complete Retail box, just minus the SKU was taken from my poor closing indy shop a year + ago, and somehow survived sitting on top of a display case for that long. This could very likely end up being one of those hunts, where unless a gamestore packrat happened to take one (or three) are we really gonna be stumbling into them? I highly doubt it.

I do tend to think like you that when you find one of something like that in your town (that came from a noted source which in this case was an actual sony plant) tends to show up every now and again as has been pointed out by a few other collectors when they find weird beta/developemt stuff in an area because it was originally manufactured there or the companys home office was there kinda thing. You should know that should you ever stumble across more, that there could be a bit of a bidding war on your hands for it. ;)

I was just over at Josh's and we hunted for the pic - we couldn't find it, but maybe someone saved it when it was posted in this thread?

I would, at the point, also say it could be a promo, but I think it's also likely that's it's legit Sony. Why?

1) Sony has a CD plant right near town. Employees could buy games there cheap (perhaps before release) and sealed PSX longboxes have been found somewhat regularly around here.
2) The buyer was brinn1, who certainly knows what he's doing - perhaps he can shed some light on it?
3) The box looked like one of the black hard plastic Sony cases - a wierd thing to promo unless it came from Sony itself

Most likely? Sony produced, but not commercially released.

Disc matched exactly, from what I remember (looking at my double jewel case one now) since the 'with disc' pic is down.

Interesting to note that the box artwork is almost 100% unchanged when you compare the two. All they did was lower the SpaceHulk logo from the top to inbetween the two characters. Even the design team "Key Game"''s logo is still right where it should be.

The ESRB T looks a little funky though...still researching that for comparison.

I see that a picture of the front and disc have been provided.

I have a complete playstation longbox collection with every plastic and cardboard edition, most sealed.

I will photgraph the back of the box and provide the picture. I don't think its a promo release, I think its a limited # longbox release changed over to jewel box quickly.

just launch titles that were packaged differently, some in unused saturn cases. sony switched over to jewel cases after the first year, if im not mistaken.

McBacon, Europe didn't get any becase these stopped being produced before Europe got the PS (Last one was retailed in July 95) (see Mayhems post earlier in this thread).

Story goes something like this

Sony, feeling that their system was going to be a very good selling thing, bought up a good number of the Large Jewel cases from Sega because they couldn't get a good enough supply of ridged cases in time for launch. I've got a feeling that they went with these longer cases because they'd be similar to the American Saturn game cases, but be totally different (being black) and would stand out against the Saturn stuff. After less than a year Sony started to put all the new games (and a portion of the older ones) into standard jewel cases. Not a stupid idea due to these cases size and the fact that so many games were coming out, stores just didn't have the shelf space to devote to them.

These longboxes came out in 3 styles the Large Jewel case, the cardboard case and the Ridged cases. All the American games have on the left side (where the cd tray opens up) a printing that looks like the Ridge that was on the top of the spine on the Ridged case.

Do you really have a longbox PS1 Space Hulk? Does it have a longbox manual? Did you get it on Ebay for $23 a few years ago? Very small parts of the world are anxiously waiting for answers to these questions...and please post that pic of the back of the box!

Am I the only one that thinks the PlayStation was actually at it's best in it's early years(95/96)? Maybe I'm just crazy. LOL

I also think the early-mid 90s was a great time for the Playstation. Possibly because that time period was such a great time for video games, and the first Playstation games were completely different from the later ones.

Still holding at 102 to the best of my knowledge...Dangerboy did a pretty exhaustive job of showing that the longbox Spacehulk was only promotional packaging.

Ugh, I just realized how much updating I need to do on these pages.

To bring everyone up to speed,

Here's the article I did on the Space Hulk long box:
http://www.game-rave.com/psx/playstation_perfect_guide/features/feat_space_hulk/

There are now confirmed 2 or 3 long boxes for Space Hulk - none with manuals. Essentially display cases. Until a long box manual shows up, that's all it is. A pre-order / marketing display case.

As Stu mentioned, here's the long box page:
http://www.game-rave.com/psx/playstation_perfect_guide/long_box/index.htm

However, there are two additions I haven't added yet:

Road Rash has a new variant - a small jewel case T ESRB variant that matches the Greatst Hits case, only it's a black label.

King's Field's two box variants have matching phone card variants.

Is anybody interested in a longbox that includes the manual for Road Rash? Lost the game ages ago and kept the box and manual. It's in pretty good condition and didn't want to throw it away considering that I'm sure someone can make some use for it. Just hit me up with a pm. Funny seeing this topic since yesterday I went to some thrift store and they had NBA Shootout and NFL GameDay longbox there.

The Playstation's biggest problem is what the Wii is currently suffering through. The most popular system is getting drowned in too many quickie-for-cash releases. Some of the system's best games came out late in the systems life, like Capcom Vs SNK, Gunslinger, etc.

You just couldn't tell from all the child game hand me downs and budget titles.

Yeah, the flood of crapware that was around circa 1999 was unbearable. It was actually one of the reasons I sold off my PlayStation collection.

Of course, a few years ago I had to rebuild my collection, mainly due to missing out on all the great RPGs.

Looking back, it has roughly the same percentage of worthy games as any other system. There was just a lot more crap to wade through.

I tear up a bit every time I see "Return Fire."

One of the greatest multi-player games E-V-E-R. No game has ever inspired as much actual violence amongst my group of friends as "Return Fire" did between 1996 and 1998.

So beautiful.

I agree. It wasn't until Mario Party years later that the violence bar amongst me and my friends was raised. God, I love Return Fire. Too bad nobody I hang out with now is any good at it. :p

It does not come in a jewel LONGBOX, as the person I replied to stated. It does come in a normal CD jewel case, but not the original jewel longbox.

*edit* I see where the confusion comes in. The person I replied to retroactively edited their post. They originally said "jewel longbox". They edited it to say "jewel case" now. No wonder you tried to correct me!

*RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!*

So lately, I've been working on finishing up a longbox collection. I actually started pretty close to around where Goodwill Hunter did, but since he had cleaned out the city of games I've been piecing it together slowly since then. ;) My problem actually was / is that I wanted to buy these all in person, and after the local GameStops stopped carrying PS1 games the supply of them dried up to almost non-existant. I had been hovering around 80 for a while, and decided that this year I would get a bunch of them at the MGC, and then I literally found none I was looking for. Ah well, no problem... I'm picking up the remainders through eBay mostly now, and have about five to go.

Anyway, something I've noticed is the two different versions of Wipeout -- well, technically three different versions. Although I wasn't planning on collecting the variations, I'm rather tempted to pick this one up, as the art of the games is what drew me to collecting these in the first place (honestly, I've played like three of these games) and although I like the original art better, the second run is pretty cool too.

Can anyone tell me how rare the second cover design is, or how rare the slip cover is? Any indication of value on either of them? It it is too expensive, I'll just say what I was planning on saying with all the other variations -- that's all right, I just want one of each!

Thanks! Can't wait to finally put this collection to bed. Then, I only have stupid challenges for myself, like PAL Dreamcast and Neo Geo Pocket titles :)

xtremegamer

I bet I am a good reason you did not pick up any long box games at MGC this year, I walked out with 20+ unique long box games and had them all in my hands within the first few minutes of the vendor area being open.

As for the Wipeout, have no real idea on value of the varients. I know I have the cardboard US picture, and the japan cardboard with the US slip cover. I found my slip cover version at a local salvation army earlier this year for $2.00, so no way to use my copy as a price indicator.

Good luck finishing the set goatdan, I am going to be at 69 games by the end of the week, but I am collecting all the long box varients, no jewels though.

goatdan
05-05-2011, 01:28 PM
Damn! I guess that is what I get for running the show! I didn't get in the vendor hall until Sunday.

What's kind of frustrating about it all too is that a lot of the games that I need are stupid common sports games. I really thought that I'd end up finding these around town or at the show over the past three years, but no dough (Striker 96, FIFA 96 and VR Soccer all come to mind). I picked up one in that time, so I decided it was time to start looking for the remainder off eBay.

If anyone wants any extras, PM me. I have like 10 extras floating around I think, and I can check them out for you. Would love to trade for some of the last games I'm missing, or upgrade some of the ones I have.

Do you have a list of what you need?

Let's see here, this is basically up to date -- I should toss this up with my Dreamcast collection thread too or something... I am the most concerned about the 'need everything' list with the exceptions of Battle Arena Toshinden 2 and WipeOut since I have those and will care about making everything minty after I'm done getting it all. As you can see, I'm really missing a lot of the relatively common games.

Need Everything
- Assault Rigs
- Battle Arena Toshinden 2 (I have it, it just is really bad)
- Cyberia
- Criticom
- FIFA 96
- Gunship
- Hi-Octane
- Striker 96
- VR Soccer
- Wipeout (2nd Cover Variation or slip cover variation)

Need good box and instructions
- Discworld
- Hardball 5

Need good box
- Bottom of the 9th
- Doom (would like another disc too)
- Johnny Bazookatone
- Off World Interceptor Extreme
- POed
- Return Fire
- Space Griffon VF-9
- Thunderstrike 2
- Triple Play 97

Need good instructions
- Chessmaster 3D
- International Track & Field
- Philosoma
- Psychic Detective
- Skeleton Warriors
- Slam and Jam 96 (would like another disc too)
- Starblade Alpha
- Total Eclipse Turbo
- Twisted Metal (would like another disc too)

I found a copy in the clearance bin of a local game store recently. To save room they threw away the original box and cut the manual in half so the game's name could show up in the CD case window. I was speechless.......

Whoo-hoo! As of today, my PS1 Longbox collection is complete!

I still have no real idea why these games were so attractive to me. I really like the art, but I can't say that I've played almost any of these titles (excepting Raiden) yet. But, the Saturn which has basically the same boxes, I don't like the art on those.

Regardless, whatever it was, after about 7 years of on-again, off-again hunting and finally caving to eBay... I did it! Collection complete :D

Btw, do you have the Wing Commander 3 variant? It's not posted on Danger's list and doesn't appear to pop up often. I've seen pictures of 2 other copies so far. There may be more, but the fact that it's not on Dangerboy's list makes it a tough one to track down.
